In the past, problems have sometimes been caused by editors from one Wikipedia being renamed on another one where they never or rarely edit, so it would be far better if you could request a rename on Arabic Wikipedia, or if that isn't possible then you can asked to be globally renamed at

Policy allows the rename as the other account is inactive and has very few edits, it's just that AntiSpoof was added to global renaming but the ability to override this was not given to the global renamers group. It should be possible for a renamer who is also an administrator on Meta.
Peter James (

Are you sure? I thought global renamers could override that, but I didn't see a good reason to do so.
JBW (

Not if "the software refused to do the renaming"; according to
meta:Special:ListGroupRights it's be limited to administrators and bureaucrats. When renaming was transferred from bureaucrats to global renamers, override-antispoof should probably have been transferred but it looks like it wasn't (unless it's also part of "centralauth-rename").

As user is under discussion at ANI, we should wait till that matter is resolved. --Deepfriedokra(talk) 08:24, 6 July 2020 (UTC)reply
Peter James Thank you for your input. As per my
reasons on my TalkPage for the re-name request, I don't understand how the process of banning a user will not involve their username also being linked. I also don't see what it has to do with the current ANI discussions, it was prompted by a probable outcome there but has nothing to do with trying to avoid it. The allegations made in that discussion that it might publicly questioned my good faith without justification and it being repeated here by the two admins after the explanation already given is troubling.
Sirjohnperrot (
talk) 10:12, 6 July 2020 (UTC)reply
Certainly global renamers can over-ride antispoof; I have done it before. I thought perhaps
Peter James might have in mind some specific reason why it couldn't be done in this particular situation, but from his and
1997kB's comments I guess not.
I have thought again, and I now agree with 1997kB saying "I see no issues overriding it in this case". I had been mistakenly thinking of this as usurpation, whereas in fact it is merely a matter of two very similar user names, which is not at all the same thing.
Sirjohnperrot what you say makes perfect sense, but renaming in the middle of a discussion on an admin noticeboard could cause confusion, as editors might not realise that the two user names were actually the same account. For that reason, although I was originally willing to do the renaming, I now realise that
Redrose64 and
Deepfriedokra are right, and we should wait until that matter is dealt with. If at the end of the discussion you are not blocked or banned, feel free to come back here and repeat your user name request, and I see no obvious reason why it shouldn't be granted. If, however, you are blocked, then I think it highly unlikely that any rename request will be considered as long as the block is in force.
Not done as explained above.
JBW (
talk) 11:58, 6 July 2020 (UTC)reply
JBW I accept your point it may cause confusion in that current discussion and have no reason to disagree with
Deepfriedokra if that is the reason. Don't understand why any block has to involve my current username given the possible consequences on other platforms. Can you not proceed with my request to change it at the conclusion of the ANI discussion, irrespective of its outcome to prevent such risks as I have identified? Most importantly though because I want to change it anyway and Wiki rules permit such a change quite straightforwardly as a user preference,
Sirjohnperrot (
talk) 12:10, 6 July 2020 (UTC)reply
Global renames are usually not offered to users who are not in good standing due to an active block, or who are under active sanctions. This is in the interest of avoiding confusion caused when a user who has had sanctions imposed by a community is renamed. For example, if the community gets consensus to block "UserA" from editing, it would confuse some users if the user was suddenly renamed to a completely different name entirely. In practice, we global renamers do not accept requests made by users who are blocked unless the block was made solely for a problematic username (which is not the case here).
If you read the notice at the top of this page, you will see that it says "This page is a forum in which users can request, and global renamers (including stewards) can consider and carry out, requests to rename accounts". (My emphasis.) Renaming is not automatic on demand.
JBW (
talk) 14:44, 6 July 2020 (UTC)reply
Yes I did read the notice and hoped that your consideration of my request would include an option to allow my preference to be taken into account. It is discouraging to read in the previous contribution that it is not being offered because there is a possibility I will 'not be in good standing due to an active block or sanction.' That is not a happy choice of phrase, it seems rather prejudicial to me given that blocks are supposed not to be punitive.

AANMAB: You have no edits on English Wikipedia apart from this request, but numerous edits on Arabic Wikipedia. In the past, problems have sometimes been caused by editors from one Wikipedia being renamed on another one where they never or rarely edit, so it would be far better if you could request a rename on Arabic Wikipedia, or if that isn't possible then you can asked to be globally renamed at
meta::Steward requests/Username changes.

AANMAB: I have already explained to you why English Wikipedia is almost certainly not the right place for you to request an unblock. If you have some good reason why we should make an exception and rename you here, then please explain that reason; don't just ignore what you have been told and create a new rename request. Unless there is a good reason for making an exception, you should request a rename on Arabic Wikipedia, or if that isn't possible then you can ask to be globally renamed at

Sirjohnperrot: I tried to rename your account to "Horatius_At_The Bridge", but the software refused to do the renaming, as it is too similar to an existing name, "HoratiusAtTheBridge". I'm afraid you will have to choose yet another name. Sorry for the continuing inconvenience.
JBW (

Policy allows the rename as the other account is inactive and has very few edits, it's just that AntiSpoof was added to global renaming but the ability to override this was not given to the global renamers group. It should be possible for a renamer who is also an administrator on Meta.
Peter James (
talk) 21:03, 5 July 2020 (UTC)reply
Are you sure? I thought global renamers could override that, but I didn't see a good reason to do so.
JBW (
talk) 22:02, 5 July 2020 (UTC)reply
Not if "the software refused to do the renaming"; according to
meta:Special:ListGroupRights it's be limited to administrators and bureaucrats. When renaming was transferred from bureaucrats to global renamers, override-antispoof should probably have been transferred but it looks like it wasn't (unless it's also part of "centralauth-rename").
Peter James (

Renamers can override anti-spoof and I see no issues overriding it in this case as the conflicted account is inactive and unlikely to come back. ‐‐
