@
Melody Lavender: That's not actually correct. The problem with the extant username is that it violates
WP:USERNAME (specifically
WP:ISU) by implying that the account is a shared-use or 'role' account, rather than being associated with and controlled by a single person. Disclosing a corporate affiliation – and thereby the user's associated conflict of interest – right in the username is probably a good thing, from a transparency standpoint. This practice is explicitly permitted by policy.
TenOfAllTrades(
talk) 16:07, 14 November 2014 (UTC)reply
TenOfAllTradesI don't think the extant username violates the policy. According to
WP:ISU, the paragraph you're linking to, the current username would be permissible. ISU is about company names. The current username doesn't include a company name. user:WikiCorrect-Health wanted to change their username because a user (Jytdog) has been personally attacking this user with all kinds of comments including that the username violates the username policy, on this accounts userpage. The reason Jytdog gives for his statement is this: Please note that you may not use a username that represents the name of a company, group, organization, product, or website (then he goes on educating the coi-user that they may not use a shared account). CorrectHealth does seem to be a website name, but seemingly not that user's company. The company in this case is IMS Health. I don't think changing a username to a name that includes a company name is a good idea. You'll soon have lots of users happily posting on talkpages with names like "I work for whatever" or "Laura from Company Y" just to put their company's names (whatever and Y) on one of the highest ranking websites. The policy just about tolerates names like these, it doesn't encourage them.--Melody Lavender 17:14, 14 November 2014 (UTC)reply
@
Melody Lavender:, WikiCorrect is a product (service) sold by IMS Health (
[2]). That's why WikiCorrect-Health is a problematic name—it's a fusion of a product and a company name. It's implicitly a shared or 'role' account, as it isn't associated with a specific, single individual. (This latter impression is reinforced by the account's userpage, which declares "We work with..." and "We also educate...", and invites others to "CONTACT US...".)
The username policy has for many years allowed the use of company names in usernames, especially as a way to flag potential conflicts of interest. If it were going to cause the sky to fall amidst a deluge of self-promotion—well, it should have happened by now. In reality, the vast majority of corporation-related editors realize (or quickly learn) that simply declaring a company affiliation – even in a username – is a very inefficient and ineffective marketing strategy. Usernames don't appear on article pages: the only part of Wikipedia that most readers (as opposed to editors) ever have reason to look at. If companies enjoy a small reputational bump among editors from their employees making constructive, positive contributions through signed comments on Talk:- and WP:-space pages, then they've earned it. (In practice, I suspect that it is more likely for a company to end up embarrassed by their employees' behavior using company-identifying accounts.)
And don't forget, policy already prohibits overly-promotional content in userspace; we can deal with that regardless of a person's chosen username.
