I'm with her

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was no consensus, default to keep. The general feeling of this discussion is that the election is too recent for us to decide on the primary topic (or lack of) for this title. Maybe we can revisit this in a year's time and there will be a consensus. Deryck C. 17:56, 5 January 2017 (UTC) reply

We have I'm with Her perhaps retarget, but if kept, a hatnote would be better. - CHAMPION ( talk) ( contributions) ( logs) 08:41, 11 December 2016 (UTC) reply

  • Keep and add hatnotes to both articles. A very, very recognisable and notable slogan from her campaign. Thryduulf ( talk) 10:08, 11 December 2016 (UTC) reply
  • Keep - The slogan is heavily identified with the campaign. CoffeeWithMarkets ( talk) 20:07, 11 December 2016 (UTC) reply
  • Delete and add a hatnote to I'm with Her - which I did a moment ago. Mihirpmehta ( talk) 23:06, 11 December 2016 (UTC) reply
  • Retarget to sitcom or delete. Given that both the sitcom title and the slogan are in Title Case, it would make sense for both variants to point to the same page. Maybe the right thing to do would be to request a move of the sitcom page to I'm with Her (TV series), but I would probably oppose that. Looking at the stats, likely a significant amount of people are searching for the slogan right now. However, that's to be expected considering the elections are in very recent memory, and to claim if that will continue would be to guess. Daß Wölf 02:32, 14 December 2016 (UTC) reply

  • Keep as-is. The Hillary Clinton campaign is the primary topic for the lowercase, and there's a hatnote at I'm With Her. -- Tavix ( talk) 02:50, 21 December 2016 (UTC) reply
  • Oppose Deletion - This should target Hillary Clinton presidential campaign, 2016 (if deemed the primary topic which it seems to be from a cursory investigation I just did) or I'm with Her (as an {{ R from alternative capitalization}}).—  Godsy ( TALK CONT) 02:55, 21 December 2016 (UTC) reply
  • Create dab page and dabs. Besides the sitcom, there's a song by Le Tigre in support of Clinton, and a folk singer trio band. The singers themselves have pages, but the band doesn't, suggesting it's a brief grouping for touring purposes. [1] Create (slogan), (TV series), and (song). AngusWOOF ( barksniff) 15:03, 21 December 2016 (UTC) reply
    • I've got no objection to creating the disambiguation or those redirects but the presidential campaign slogan remains the primary topic for this term. Thryduulf ( talk) 15:26, 21 December 2016 (UTC) reply
That'd be fine, but it will need a "redirects here" hatnote with "other uses" pointing to the dab. It would be like Cold Case (disambiguation). AngusWOOF ( barksniff) 15:50, 21 December 2016 (UTC) reply
  • Redirect to song. Perhaps the campaign is the primary topic now, but is unlikely to be even next month. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 02:21, 27 December 2016 (UTC) reply

(Eubot) Delete. We already have László lovász, which I've rcatted as {{ R from incorrect capitalisation}}; there's no need to compound the felony by changing the spelling of his name too. Si Trew ( talk) 04:30, 11 December 2016 (UTC) reply

it's an {{ R from incorrect spelling}}. How many incorrect things do we need before it becomes nonsense? Si Trew ( talk) 13:47, 11 December 2016 (UTC) reply
It's no more an incorrect spelling than any other that differs only in the omission of diacritics, so {{ R from incorrect spelling}} is not relevant here. How many incorrect things make nonsense depends entirely on how they are incorrect and the plausibility of the differences - and as with every redirect it is up to the person wanting to change the status quo to demonstrate that the change is beneficial to the encyclopaedia. In this instance all lower case without diacritics makes a very plausible search term, meaning deletion would make it harder for readers to find the topic they are looking for and so keeping brings the greatest benefit to the project. Thryduulf ( talk) 14:27, 11 December 2016 (UTC) reply
Deleting the redirect would not, for any practical purpose, make it harder for a reader to find the article, however they decided to search. Since it's now quite hard to do an "exact terms" search (even Google with the "verbatim" option selected does not actually believe you and only return verbatim results). All its presence does is burden editors with the task of keeping them synchronised, and adds an opportunity for mistaken (accidental) linking that would be reduced were the redirect not to exist in. Čapek

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was move Čapek (surname) to Čapek and retarget the other two there. This closure is a bit nuanced. I read from below that we basically need to decide on two questions:

First, is Karel sufficiently strong a primary topic to have the surname titles redirect to him? Comments below based on Google hits make a strong case on one hand but conformity with other Wikipedias, especially those of Slavic languages, make a strong case on another. The argument about pageviews depends on how you look at the data and doesn't go strongly either way. On the whole, we seem to be heading towards a rough consensus towards not making Karel the primary topic.

The second question is, then, what is the best disambiguation solution? From the comments later on in this discussion, retitling the existing disambiguation page to the base title seems to be the best solution as it achieves disambiguation of all topics named "Čapek" and conformity with other Wikipedias. Deryck C. 18:13, 5 January 2017 (UTC) reply

Perhaps Karel is primary, but we have more than one Čapek: At the very least, his brother Josef Čapek. Both are venerable articles (Karel created on 9 March 2002 and Josef on 12 July 2003).

We have Čapek (surname) (which is hatnoted in Karel Čapek) and it might be better to retarget there (or what would likely result from that, move it over the redirect at Čapek). The first is marked as {{ R from surname}}. Si Trew ( talk) 03:47, 11 December 2016 (UTC) reply

  • Keep. It seems clear to me from Google that Karel is the primary topic. Si, I hope you haven't forgotten about WP:BEFORE? Thryduulf ( talk) 10:23, 11 December 2016 (UTC) reply
No, but what applies to Čapek may or may not apply to Chapek and Capek. Another one of these kinds of redirects that you've started the discussion with at WT:RFD#Redirects_that_should_be_synchronised. Since his surname is not Chapek or Capek, there's less of a case for those two being directed there. Si Trew ( talk) 06:02, 15 December 2016 (UTC) reply
The Google results tell me that Karel is also the primary topic for "Capek" and the secondmost common for "Chapek" - the first being Walt Disney executive Bob Chapek who we don't have an article about (and at first glance he probably isn't notable enough for an article), so I maintain my reccomendation. As for synchronisation, I have not proposed that these three redirects should always point to the same place, nor do I think they should as while they should all target Karel Čapek at the moment that might change in future (e.g. if Bob Chapek does get an article). I'm unable to work out what gave you any impression otherwise? Thryduulf ( talk) 08:35, 15 December 2016 (UTC) reply
  • Delete. Čapek should not go to one particular one when we have Čapek (surname). Typing in without the mark is what most will do and is already covered by the redirect Capek (surname). The single word redirect gives it primacy over the fully functional one. There is some argument for redirecting Chapek to Čapek (surname). Chemical Engineer ( talk) 17:48, 11 December 2016 (UTC) reply
    • @ Chemical Engineer: Your reasoning supports an argument to retarget these to Čapek (surname) (or rather it would support that argument if there weren't a primary topic), but doesn't support deletion (whether there is a primary topic or not). Thryduulf ( talk) 21:44, 11 December 2016 (UTC) reply
  • Keep. As seen here, Karel by far eclipses in popularity all the other relevant pages. Further, Capek and Čapek together have more than twice the amount of hits of Čapek (surname). This means that out of all people searching for C/Čapek and not clicking Karel Čapek in the drop down menu, the majority still doesn't proceed further than Karel Čapek's page. I think that's enough to establish Karel Čapek as the primary topic. Daß Wölf 01:58, 14 December 2016 (UTC) reply
No, that's putting the cart before the horse. We can't make assumptions on whether, when a redirect takes someone somewhere, that's where they wanted to go. They may have just given up, or searched a different way, when they go to Karel. It doesn't mean that Karel is the primary topic for Capek or Chapek: that's not his surname. Si Trew ( talk) 06:02, 15 December 2016 (UTC) reply
What about all the people who purposely land on Karel and then click the hatnote out of curiosity? There is no clear way about this with the data we have, but I think it's likely that people are getting where they want to go most of the time here. Daß Wölf 01:00, 16 December 2016 (UTC) reply
  • Delete. At the moment this redirect takes priority. If it were deleted, then typing in Capek gets you a choice of Capek's Tales, Capekiller and Capek (surname) which seems to me to be an adequate list, leading rapidly to a choice of Čapeks if you select the surname. Chemical Engineer ( talk) 10:48, 17 December 2016 (UTC) reply

  • Dabify to include at least The brothers Čapek, Čapek (surname) and 1931 Čapek. That was all I could find by running a Google for intitle:Čapek site:en.wikipedia.org. Also, it is better to move the surname article to this title than to retarget it there. - CHAMPION ( talk) ( contributions) ( logs) 23:53, 21 December 2016 (UTC) reply
I added the newly created Brothers Čapek to Čapek (surname) see also, and linked to that orphan from each of the brothers' bios. wbm1058 ( talk) 00:46, 31 December 2016 (UTC) reply
  • We seem to be the outlier in assigning a primary topic, virtually every other language Wikipedia puts the surname (dab) at the base title. I see the argument for page-views, though you should look at all the others combined before making a judgment. In their native language, page-views for the brother are closer. Given they get equal billing in Brothers Čapek and in the museum in Malé Svatoňovice, I'm inclined to say there should not be a primary topic, in deference to the artist brother. This would align English Wikipedia with most other languages. Move the surname dab to the base title. – wbm1058 ( talk) 01:08, 31 December 2016 (UTC) reply
  • Comment Either keeping or retargeting to the surname index should work (not sure which is better, there seems to be a good case on both sides). I see no point in deleting, and dabifying wouldn't be needed either – the only entry a potential dab page could have that is not already listed in the surname index is the asteroid, and that is better dealt with by a hatnote. – Uanfala (talk) 12:55, 4 January 2017 (UTC) reply

  • Keep per WP:RFD#KEEP #3 "They aid searches on certain terms." The list of synonyms for Gewürztraminer was culled from Jancis Robinson's Wine Grapes and the Vitis International Variety Catalogue (VIVC). These synonyms are not translations (of the word "Red" or elsewise) or potential typos but rather the grape's actual name in different languages. These names can appear in text, scholarly articles and on wine labels that originate in other countries. For English speakers, they may come across these seemingly obscure synonyms and search for them on places like Google so it is helpful that on the first page of the Google search, they are guided to Gewürztraminer via Wikipedia. Additionally, as the English Wikipedia is the largest, most accessed version of Wikipedia, visited by millions of users across the globe (many of whom English is a 2nd language), it is exceedingly helpful to have known synonyms of wine grape's from other languages as redirects for day to day user. Delete both, or retarget to Cserszegi Fűszeres. In Hungarian this simply means "spicy" (well the first one does, the second one is nonsense), so as a combining term it's fine, but standing alone it is a bit WP:RFD#D2 confusing for it to go here. It would be like " rouge" or " rosso" going to a grape variety. Si Trew ( talk) 02:32, 11 December 2016 (UTC) reply

  • Delete both - Were there a strong Hungarian connection to the global trade in spices either now or historically, then maybe I could see going over to the main page ' spice'... but that doesn't seem to be the case. The result of the discussion was soft retarget to Wiktionary. Ivanvector ( Talk/ Edits) 18:58, 4 January 2017 (UTC) reply

Delete. From the WP:FIRSTSENTENCE of the target: "The English word "novella" derives from the Italian novella". So this plural is, er, WP:RFD#D8 novella obscure synonym. It's OK as a Latin plural, but then it just means novels. But in the articles where it's actually used, it's in a very specific sense defined here at Hebrew Union College's reference on Rabbinic literature.

So, three articles use "novellæ": Simha of Speyer, Elijah Spira and Ezra Malki. Five use "novellae": Rabbeinu Tam, Philip Wodianer, Moshe Schick, Meir Abulafia and Pinhas Hirschprung. In each case it's about Jewish/Talmudic scholarship and directing people to Novella is just wrong. We should probably WP:REDLINK it as WP:RFD#D2 confusing. (eubot) Delete as WP:RFD#D8 novel or obscure synonym The English transliteration is "Mandritsa". The Albanian is Mandrica or Mandricë, but we can't just drop the dots off the "ë" here because the "c" needs to be transliterated (as "ts") too, and it loks like Albanian "ë" is nearer to "a" than "e" (The Greek uses "α", for example, and the Bulgarian uses Cyrillic "а"). I've marked the others I mentioned as {{ R from other language|sq}}. Si Trew ( talk) 13:13, 10 December 2016 (UTC) reply

  • Keep. Here's a plausible situation: let's say someone with a keyboard that does not have access to diacritics came across the native Albanian "Mandricë" in a source and wanted to know what it was. Not sure. It's not mention at the target and it could be easily {{ confused}} with Acadian French or even Cajun language (which → Cajun French). We have Acadian (disambiguation) so it might be better to retarget it there, but there may be better targets I haven't found. It's perhaps WP:XY but I don't think any good would come of deleting it. It's quite old (2009) but nothing links to it and it hasn't been edited/retargeted since, so it doesn't seem particularly a controversial target (slightly to my surprise). Its hits are never more than 2 a day, 69 in the last year, well below bot level. Perhpas just let it stand as {{ R from incorrect spelling}}? (I'll tag it that, for now, without prejudice.) • Keep. “Accadian” is an alternative spelling of “Akkadian”. It is not a misspelling. It does not mean “Acadian” so WP:XY does not apply. The fact that it is not mentioned at the target is irrelevant: it is not necessary to list trivial spelling variations in articles. For readers who meant to type “Acadian”, there is already a hatnote directing them to Acadian French. Gorobay ( talk) 18:32, 30 December 2016 (UTC) reply

Daß Wölf 02:32, 14 December 2016 (UTC) reply

it's an {{ R from incorrect spelling}}.

I'd rather that we just get rid of these. CoffeeWithMarkets ( talk) 08:01, 11 December 2016 (UTC) reply
  • Keep per WP:RFD#KEEP #3 "They aid searches on certain terms." The list of synonyms for Gewürztraminer was culled from Jancis Robinson's Wine Grapes and the Vitis International Variety Catalogue (VIVC). In the VIVC, it is written as FUSZERES without the umlaut but in other texts the umlaut is present so I erred on the side of caution with creating both. These synonyms are not translations or potential typos but rather the grape's actual name in different languages. After all, Redirects are cheap. Agne Cheese/ Wine 16:15, 13 December 2016 (UTC) reply

  • Comment. I suppose this was meant as a {{ R to diacritics}} for Mandricë. FWIW the Albanian ë is pronounced similar to the English word "a" (not the "ay" pronounciation). Daß Wölf 02:44, 14 December 2016 (UTC) reply
