Dear Worm That Turned,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Hi Worm,

I was actually going to suggest you to her as a an adopter but noticed you'd posted on her talk page already. I think the problem being faced is she has quite an "I know best" attitude that is going to get hit hard when she runs into some more serious hurdles than just inappropriately wanting to adopt another user. Her reply to you indicates to me that she would enter adoption only because you really want to be her adopter as opposed to her realising that she needs adoption. Indeed, but unfortunately if she's not interested in being adopted, there's no point in forcing her. I wish her the best of luck, she may do alright (it's not a case of "needing" adoption, but I do think adoption would be beneficial). Hi Worm,

I've discovered some copyvio or copypaste in an article I've been review. I've been reading the various wiki articles on this issue, but they're hard to understand exactly how much can be copied "more than five words" or the "close paraphrase stuff". Also, I don't want to come across like a ten ton truck. How to handle this? MathewTownsend ( talk) 20:56, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

Well, it's not acceptable in any situation, but how hard you should come down on the user does depend on a number of things, whether they should know better, how bad the violation is etc. I'm afraid I'd actually have to see the violation to advise further. I posted the example with the source and the editor reacted quite rightly and saw it as a big problem. She said she'd like to put off any more work on the article until tomorrow after she has checked through it.

Just out of curiosity, how would you interpret this:

• ""The family lived rather conservatively, with neither parent developing a habit of smoking or drinking. They also never seemed to run out of money before the third week of the month."?
• I suggested: "The family lived frugally and never seemed to run out of money before the third week of the month. Neither parent drank or smoke."?
• She said: (the suggested change comes across too clumsy. And some take offense to the term frugal.) How about "The family lived financially conservative, yet never seemed to run out of money by the third week of the month, due to his mother's talent at stretching a meal. Her son's favorite dish was a casserole using a mixture of onions, celery, rice, and mushroom soup over ground beef." (the source wouldn't change.)

• Is financially conservative like fiscally conservative? And why would being so make it more likely to run out of money etc? And does finacial consrvatism related to whether the parents drank or smoked?

• The article is Douglas W. Owsley which I'm reviewing for GA. Talk:Douglas W. Owsley/GA1. I do think it's basically sound but she has (to me) an odd way of wording things.
• An other (really minor) example -

• I said:

"Although his father served as game warden, he was rarely found hunting and disliked the thought of making trophies out of heads and carcasses of animals." - I don't think (I may be wrong) that a game warden necessarily engages in hunting or making trophies out of heads and carcasses... I think they enjoy nature, but as to the rest .... Do you have information about this aspect?

• She replied:

(I'm in the northwest and know wardens in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming that hunt and work with taxidermists, that said, I added a source)

• I guess some of this seems like faint OR, as I don't understand what this has to do with Owsley subsequent career. It's this (to me) rather strang juxaposition of things that makes it hard for me to understand what is meant.

Right, well I've had a look. I'm not too worried about the juxtaposition, or even the the OR which looks very mild to me. Even if a game warden doesn't hunt or mount, the will work with people who do on a regular basis, so the idea that the warden has distaste for the people they work with might well have relevence.

I'm more concerned by the examples of copyright problems. It's not the whole article, but the odd sentence here and there is worrying. I would suggest going through the sources in depth to see if there are any more examples. You've found two examples already, if you find another 2-3, I'd stop looking and let the editor take over (perhaps even failing the GA at the time). I've worked with Cindy in the past (helping one of my adoptees) and I know she's a helpful friendly person, though I've no experience of her writing. Worm^TT · ( talk) 09:31, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

  • What's even more alarming is this editor's user page says: "I am an Online Ambassador, member of the Ambassador Selection Team, and member of the Ambassador Steering Committee. I have worked with university professors and students through the Public Policy Initiative over the past year and attended the Wikipedia in Higher Education Summit in July 2011, to assist with expanding the project to the global community. I am now part of the Wikipedia Education Program, with an emphasis on the United States and Canada."

Well, it certainly goes into close paraphrasing, possibly further into plagiarism - not sure about copyright violation. Best thing to do is fail it, citing the amount of violations - allow Cindamuse to re-write the article in a less problematic way. That's a big article to re-write though. Depending on how unacceptable you feel her work, you could do a bit of research on her past articles - consider a WP:CCI. I'd personally think that's a bit extreme - if you're unsure, perhaps email User:Moonriddengirl, our resident copyright expert, a foundation staff member and an overall lovely person.

As for how Cindamuse has those roles, it's a very different skill set to writing articles and one she is very good at (I've bumped into her a number of times while I was being an Online Ambassador). • The problem is that Cindamuse doesn't agree that it's close paraphrasing and quoted a bunch of legal stuff justifying it. See her response on Talk:Douglas W. Owsley/GA1. So if I fail it, she'll just renominate it and it will possibly pass if the new reviewer isn't thorough. I will email Moonriddengirl as you suggest, I guess. Hmmmm. Well, Wikipedia policy is often more strict than legal requirements (on fair use for example), so whilst I'm sure she's right (and it's not a "copyright violation") I'm still not sure that we should be accepting it. I'd get a second opinion from someone a little more experienced in the area if I were you, as I suggest, Moonriddengirl would be a great choice, but perhaps one of the other editors who wrote the dispatches you mentioned? • Read with interest your conversation. I appreciate the time and effort that has gone into reviewing this article, but remain concerned at the lack of neutrality and the equating of my work with the quality of the WEP and OAs. Neutrality is tantamount here. I am concerned that Mathew's bias of the WEP may be clouding his review of this article. Note that the "legal stuff" I presented was directly from Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Not my legal stuff, but guidance offered for Wikipedians. Note that Mathew contacted Moonriddengirl in her official WMF capacity, to which she cannot address online issues. I have asked her to take look at the article in her personal role as Moonriddengirl. Ah, yes - well, Mathew seems to have accepted my answer on that and he'd hardly be the first editor to believe that an problems in content creation means problems in all areas. I'm not sure that he's biased against WEP - especially since I'm involved in it... if he was I think he'd have disowned me. • No, Mathew doesn't seem to get it, nor did he apparently accept your answer. Immediately following your remark, his reply assumed bad faith on my part, while he expressed the same concerns more adamantly at Maggie's Mdennis talk page. The WEP has been concerned with the environment of the GAN and FAN process and their approach with editors and students involved in the WEP program. While I am certainly more than willing to address specific issues of paraphrasing and work to bring any outstanding issues into compliance, the accusations and innuendo are inappropriate. Note that this article has been through DYK and no copyright or paraphrasing issues were flagged there. (Edited to add: I spoke with Maggie. _{(Impudent Adoptee)} I don't know if Worm uses the same method as me ( my user page, top bar), but I created User:Gilderien/Status and added importScript('User:Xenocidic/statusChanger2.js'); on my custom javascript page, User:Gilderien/vector.js to get clickable links by the contributions link at the top, and then put {{Statustop|link=User:Gilderien/Status|img_link=Template:Statustop|offset=430}} on my user page. Most editors have a status page on Wikipedia somewhere and then use {{ statustop}}, which reads the page and changes the template based on the status page. (They then manually update the status page, regularly). What you can do is play around with Javascript, in the way Gilderian has - which should allow you to press a button and it will update for you (Will still require an update to wikipedia I believe).

My template is a bit more sneaky. I'm too lazy, too forgetful and too opinionated to add an edit just to say I'm online every day. So what I've done is set up the page you looked at which gives the hours that I do 90% of my editing. That's not to say I'm definitely online during them, nor that I'm definitely offline outside of them, but I thought it might be helpful. Now, if you look at my availability box, it checks if today is a Saturday or a Sunday, then puts me offline if it is. Then checks if it is between 8am and 4pm and puts me online if it is.

So if you tried a copy paste of mine yesterday, it wouldn't have worked - as it was a Sunday. If you like my method, let me know what hours you'd want and I can set it up for you. It would be cached so it's not perfect (can be 30 mins or so wrong), but it does the job. Worm^TT · ( talk) 08:39, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

They're worth reading as they can give valuable insight into community practise and opinion, but it is subject to less scrutiny than policies and guidelines and therefore can be contradictory. For example Wikipedia:You don't need to cite that the sky is blue and Wikipedia:You do need to cite that the sky is blue are contradictory essays. Please have a look, the image is about the districts of Indian Punjab/East Punjab - in other words, the district map of Indian Punjab, but it's an outdated image that not includes the newly born/created districts: Pathankot district, Fazilka district, Barnala district. Hello, admin. Please help . I know there are some contribution finder tools but i found one of them very good but unfortunately i missed it please help me finding that again. That was the tool that lists a given user's created pages in a list with names of pages only and there is a drop down menu to select 3 options "including redirects", "except redirects" and "all" (not sure it's exact). Re your Qs on Five Pillars: Q4: I think you are trying to say "is the BBC a reliable source writing about its own series 'The Troubles'?". Please re-word the question to make this clear and fix the The Troubles link to point to the article about the series. With respect to to The Troubles, I was referring to the etho-national conflict in Northern Ireland, not any specific TV series, just to see if an editor is understanding what editorial oversight is, and gently introducing concepts of NPOV (when referring to ITV). The hops and pips one is a little annoying, it was "redoing the site" for the last few weeks, didn't realise it had pulled it all together. Are you suggesting that ITV is widely regarded as an unreliable source? The answer I would give to your question is "BBC news and ITV news are both reliable sources for Wikipedia purposes but, given a choice, BBC news is generally considered the more reliable". Is that the answer you were expecting? If so, a) it is far too subtle a difference to be worth using as a question and b) would you expect someone from Oklahoma (young or old) to be able to even start answering? — RHaworth ( talk · contribs) 11:08, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

There is only one purpose to the questions I set and that is to check the user has put a little effort in to understanding the topic. Your answer is absolutely correct, as would be thousands of different answers. The only answer I don't accept is the one word "Yes" or "No". I want to see some evidence of a thought process. I've rephrased the question, to be "Would you consider BBC news to be a reliable source on it's rival, ITV?" - which I should have done months ago, as lots of people read it the same way you do, and that explicitly shows the reason behind the question. You'd never heard of a stunt kite?!? Colloquially, it's basically just a kite where you control using two strings rather than one, so you have more control. The shape matters too. Having said that, I'm no kite expert, I just had one growing up. The Kite festival is an annual thing, where they fly lots of kites and have lots for sale. Round 1 is already over! The 64 highest scorers have progressed to round 2. Our highest scorer was Grapple X ( submissions), again thanks mostly to a swathe of good articles on The X-Files. In second place was Tigerboy1966 ( submissions), thanks an impressive list of did you knows about racehorses. Both scored over 400 points. Following behind with over 300 points were Ruby2010 ( submissions), Cwmhiraeth ( submissions), Miyagawa ( submissions) and Casliber ( submissions). February also saw the competition's first featured list: List of colleges and universities in North Dakota, from Ruby2010 ( submissions). At the other end of the scale, 11 points was enough to secure a place in this round, and some contestants with 10 points made it into the round on a tiebreaker. This is higher than the 8 points that were needed last year, but lower than the 20 points required the year before. The number of points required to progress to round 3 will be significantly higher.

The remaining contestants have been split into 8 pools of 8, named A through H. Round two will finish in two months time on 28 April, when the two highest scorers in each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers, will progress to round 3. The pools were entirely random, so while some pools may end up being more competitive than others, this is by chance rather than design.

The judges would like to point out two quick rules reminders. First, any content promoted during the interim period (that is, on or after 27 February) is eligible for points in round 2. Second, any content worked on significantly this year is eligible for points if promoted in this round. I don't like them to be honest, they don't seem neutral at all. For example, "attempt to" is a way of introducing an opinion, implying that Wikipedia holds a view on the matter. That is verifiable, neutral and correct. Whether they succeed is dealt with by the following lines, stating that this is against current mainstream scientific thought. I'm kinda struggling with it as i think it looks neutral now, whereas before it tried to state something many would claim impossible:

That seems neutral to me (granted you have a lot more experience on this than me).

And if it was changed back to:

That is what HA say but not what we would since if it was changed to:

• "Homosexuals Anonymous (HA) is an "ex-gay" group which practices conversion therapy to turn people into chickens"

Wouldn't WP change that to:

• "Homosexuals Anonymous (HA) is an "ex-gay" group which practices conversion therapy to "turn people into chickens""

or

• "Homosexuals Anonymous (HA) is an "ex-gay" group which practices conversion therapy to attempt to turn people into chickens"

The thing is that "to attempt to" serves no purpose except to lead the reader. In your example, yes, I would say

We're not saying that it works or not, but that's what they're doing. adding "to attempt to" is as bad as

• "Homosexuals Anonymous (HA) is an "ex-gay" group which successfully uses conversion therapy to turn people into chickens"

"All but 2" of his interviewed clients is not the same as all but 2 of his clients. He could have had 1000s. I just don't see what it's adding, especially as it's alledged and it doesn't say what "sexual relations" means.

I've started getting properly into Wikipedia in the last few weeks. I can feel addiction merrily chomping down on me and I think it's high time I found a mentor to direct my energy. Now, you are officially Good At This^tm, but it's more than that. I stalked you a little (forgive me) and checked out some of your conflict resolution history, and realised that you take Assuming Good Faith and elevate it to a fine art. Although I love to help people, I find I have trouble maintaining my patience and a cool head when others pull their weapons out. I pull mine out too, and then it's very difficult to get me to budge from my position. So I am not only looking for lessons (although I would like that too, for the knowledge!) - I'm seeking someone I can look up to as a role model in the long term. I'd be very proud if that could be you.

Unfortunately, although you are listed in the Adopters list as available, I saw that your user page says you are not seeking new adoptees, and your talk page also mentions how busy you are. Still, I reckoned the worst you can say is no. :) On the other hand, I am not in any great rush and perfectly willing to wait until you have a vacancy, and I hope I wouldn't be a particularly 'high-maintenance' student.

Well done! Unfortunately it does happen on wikipedia. 31 hours is pretty standard for IPs, especially school IPs. The theory is that they will be blocked for the rest of the school day plus another school day (7h) which should be enough to deter them from walking out of the classroom and coming straight back the next day. ( talk page stalker) Hello, I wouldn't make a complaint, but I'm not a fan of the sig either. 1) Very, very long. 2) The editcount figure shows total edits to EN by every user ever, I assume, at the time you post it - but it redirects to your personal contribs, which I find a bit misleading. 3) The colour-coding thing to show your availability is a neat idea, but because it doesn't update once posted, it is not very useful for seeing whether you're online. If you're signing something, you're online! If people need more info they can go to your user page.

I suppose what it comes down to is that a fancy sig is a bit like decorating your house with flashy Christmas lights. No matter how much you like it, it does you no favours if your neighbours start a petition. Ask yourself who you're doing it for. Right. There's a few issues with the article at User:Turbo566/Nawton primary school at the moment, perhaps you'll want to have a look at them?

1. Primary schools aren't inherently notable and are generally deleted at AfD. To stop this from happening, you'd have to prove that this school is notable under the general notability guidelines, and that means that you'll have to find a fair number of independent sources which discuss the school specifically. Not just mention it, but actually discuss it.
2. The image that you've got up there is an example image. You'll want to remove that before going live, possibly replacing it with a free image of the school, but definitely removing it.
3. The reference is unformated. Try using the {{ cite}} template, adding more information in, like when it was accessed, who publishes it and so on.
4. It seems to have 4 names! Nawton Primary School, Nawton primary school, Nawton Comprehensive Primary School and Nawton Community primary school
5. It doesn't read particularly well at the moment. Remember, you're writing in an encyclopedic manner, keeping to the facts and trying to be succinct. That means that repeating the same thing isn't particularly good. For example The entire second sentence could be removed by writing
   Nawton Primary School (or Nawton Comprehensive Primary School) is a comprehensive school located in Nawton, North Yorkshire.
6. The titles need to follow wikipedia standards (capital at the start, and that's it)
7. You have an empty section.

Sooo there's quite a bit more that needs doing before it gets moved to the main space, but keep at it, it may be a great article one day! Worm^TT · ( talk) 16:10, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

( talk page stalker) Umm, there seems to be a problem here: it isn't a comprehensive school! That's a word used for secondary / high / senior schools (I suppose pretty well all primary schools are comprehensive in effect, in that they have pupils from all abilities, but there aren't any selective alternatives except some competitive fee-paying schools with entry exams). What it calls iself on the school website is "Nawton Community Primary School" (and also "Nawton CP School", another title from which we'll need a redirect). Turbo, you need to be careful to read the words of the sources you use. Good luck in your editing - though, as Worm suggests above, we may not be able to have a whole article about the school, and it might be better to add the info to the Nawton, North Yorkshire article. There's a free-to-use picture of the school at http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2756771, though it doesn't seem to have been copied into Commons as yet. Pam D 16:27, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

All contributions are released under WP:CC-BY-SA, so do be careful about giving the impression of ownership. How I got there, if you're interested, was through User talk:Hghyux, where you suggested he used your Barnometer. I thought it was an interesting idea and went to your userpage. Not at all. I've got a personal barnstar that I give out to people completing my course User:Worm That Turned/Adopt/Barnstar, and it's so clever you can give out parts of it at a time! You're allowed to create anything you like like that as long as it's not disruptive (effectively likely to bother people) and using content that's released under license.

As for AxG's awards, he's quite cleverly used a set of <gallery></gallery> tags. How about you have a go creating something using those tags at User:Wesley Mouse/Awards, which you can transclude in. Want to work on a different article instead and get away from cars. You work on things you have an interest in so i had a bit of inspiration there and found this - Hurst Street. It's one of the worst articles on Wikipedia and i visit the place at least once every 3 weeks. I could do it up, get some more information and references, even a better picture. But...i would need to rename it to Birmingham gay village, which is the more common name than Hurst Street and would give much more information on the area. What do you think? What kind of problems exactly. I set the parameters to archive exactly like Miszabot III was to archive for you. I would like to know what the problems are because I set up Cluebot III on my page. The style of archiving is different - it indexes all the pages to a cluebot subpage. That may speed up searching, but it's horribly unflexible if you want to change your archiving. I originally had my archiving by date, then decided that it wasn't appropriate as some months had lots and others little, so I decided to change it. Cluebot's inflexibility didn't let me do that, so I switched to Misza.

The thing is, you know I'm technically minded. You know I understand archiving and templates and bots. You know I've been here long enough to evaluate options and make a choice. I find it astounding that you'd go onto my page and change my archiving, without asking. Remember what we were saying about patience on your page? I don't mind if my page isn't archived. I can live with a couple of old threads for a few weeks. I could even archive them manually, but I don't want a different bot archiving my page. I'd suggest you undo BWilkin's one too - favours are great if someone asks for it or is even aware, but not so much when done behind their backs - especially if it's something they want. DeFacto wouldn't put down the stick. There was consensus at the page, yet he brought it to different forums over and over until he had to be blocked for disruption. Well you're right that i don't like the result. The opposing views are just voting and not following any policies, that's how i interpreted the rules on a requested move, it does state quite clearly that it's not a vote and that we have to use policy to back our opinion.

That's why i'd like someone independent of either Wikiproject to look in and say their bit.

And i'm unsure how to add that tag to Gay Pride.

Are you on line now? I'd like to discuss something with you. Also, the hardest part of the "test" is finding articles that I'm capable of cleaning up. Most require being able to add references that I can't find. Also, on the vandal patrol, I almost never revert using "vandal" unless it is very very very clear. I looked and looked and looked through WP:BACKLOG, spent hours. Couldn't even find a reference to add or an orphan to save. I think that category has been combed through already for anything salvageable. Wikifying, according to the directions is not just adding links (which the articles have anyway, but making sure it's referenced, structured correctly, etc. I'll look some more today, but I ended up thinking most articles are a hopeless mess. I couldn't find one article that I could fix one tag. And I look through hundreds. I started looking through Random articles, and just found lots that needed tagging! Hello, it's MunkkyNotTrukk. Thank you very much for your answer to my feedback, and to answer your question, the page I was trying to contribute to was List of Characters in Transformers Prime. To be clear, I'm in no way claiming ownership of that article, I was simply trying to remove poor spelling and grammar, remove any unnecessary information and condense each character synopsis down into shorter, easier to read paragraphs, because I feel they're a bit too long. However, any edit I make is deleted after a few days, and the article is returned t exactly, word for word, the way it was before I edited it, so I suspect that whoever wrote the article originally IS claiming ownership. Re Amy's answer on the RS pillar -- we both know easily accessible isn't a requirement for RS; not sure if you want to mention it or not:

• reason not to: obviously wiki-policy is overwhelming so maybe it's too fine a point.
• reason to: she might make a good faith but incorrect removal of someone's reliable but not easily accessible (e.g. a book)

User:MathewTownsend seems to be having a case of "I didn't hear that" ( 1) and deliberately misconstruing stuff ( 1, 2) for the Signpost writeup on Whistler's Mother, a painting which he doesn't think is iconic and has refused to budge from said position. Looked at the incoming links to North Pier, I found a huge number: from a Chicago malls template, "defunct" section - so disambiguated that link to a redlink to North Pier (Chicago) - it doesn't seem worth creating a dab page or hatnote just to allow for that.
