Persona lyrics

To add into the Kotaku section "Kotaku UK falsely accused Nintendo and Atlus of using a song in Super Smash Bros Ultimate from Persona 5 of having lyrics with the term “retarded” in a derogatory manner. Atlus informed Nintendo this was false, and Nintendo informed Kotaku UK, who issued a retraction and apology."

You should probably keep the discussion centralized on the article talk page, but a preview of what you’re likely to be told - I don’t think any of these are on the WP:VG/S usable sourced list. These are all small-time, obscure, amateur, self-published blogger types. They’re unlikely to sway anyone. Sergecross73 msg me 17:02, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
So use new description and the reference would just be from Kotaku itself. https://www.kotaku.co.uk/2019/04/19/we-screwed-up-with-that-persona-lyric — Preceding unsigned comment added by Metrotitan ( talkcontribs) 18:11, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
We’re not trying to verify it happened, you’re trying to verify it’s importance. Using the Kotaku article itself doesn’t indicate any sort of lasting impact or importance. Sergecross73 msg me 18:49, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
Under the understanding that Kotaku would not ordinary dedicate an entire article as an apology. Some publishers may revise the original article instead and issue clarification. Moreover it is highly uncommon for a publisher to apologise to multiple game companies, in addition to gamers/readers. We can therefore determine it has impact. The apology has a clear reference to being a response from their readers:

Many of you have suggested alternative readings for the lyric, from 'retort it' to 'ritardendo' to 'retard it' (with 'retard' in this context being a technical musical term).

We would like to apologise to Atlus, Nintendo, and the many Persona fans who were angry about this piece. It looks like we got it wrong. We screwed up: sorry.

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Metrotitan ( talkcontribs)

Retractions and apologies aren’t as rare as you seem to think they are. I’m unconvinced that this minor slip up is a notable incident in their decade+ spanning career. It’s to stay out unless you can get a WP:CONSENSUS in your favor at the talk page, which is why I keep directing you to that talk page. Sergecross73 msg me 22:03, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

WikiProject assessments

Hello again. There's something I have been meaning to ask you: since I proposed the B-class assessment checklist suggestions back in April 2013 but to no effect, is it necessary to revisit it, using the WP:FILM checklist as a reference? Thanks. Lord Sjones23 ( talk - contributions) 18:43, 26 April 2019 (UTC)

I don’t know. I don’t usually heavily use that stuff all that much. I just make a quick estimation and keep moving. I’m sure if you just ask WT:VG they’ll advise though. Sergecross73 msg me 17:06, 27 April 2019 (UTC)

Regarding a proposal for the VG MoS

Back in August 2012, we developed a proposal regarding the video game MoS but it was left unfinished and I would like to revisit it now as it has been over 6 years since we last worked on it. Is it appropriate to rewrite and implement some of them in the MoS at the moment? Thanks, Lord Sjones23 ( talk - contributions) 15:10, 1 May 2018 (UTC)

Ah yes, I remember that. I still think it’s good stuff, and would help support you in it. However, much like back then, and some of the current discussions going on at WT:VG, these discussions tend to bring up a lot of arguing. Do you have the time and motivation to likely have to deal with implementing it? As I mentioned on my user page, I’m about to have a lot going on off-wiki, and I’m still not sure if it’ll make me more or less active on-wiki short-term. Sergecross73 msg me 17:05, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

It’s alright. Chances are, that editor isn’t capable of understanding my point anyways. I’ve already said similar things a few times prior and every time he didn’t even acknowledge it. Avenged Sevenfold

Hi! I was on ferret's talk page, asking why he threatened an edit ban. You commented on my "Normie Poser Band" comment regarding the band Avenged Sevenfold. What normie poser means is that people that listen to Avenged Sevenfold think that they are all Metal asf but they aren't. You also said that this an encyclopedia and should not be edited by the so-called "Metal Police." If an article has any relation to rock and metal at all than it should be edited by your so-called "Metal Police" because we know more about metal. It is the music that we love and it is diluted when people like you interrupt me in our editing of bands. Why are you not letting me use my terminology? Anyone who has a semblance of knowledge about the Metal underground knows what I mean. And you say my view is skewed? My view is informed, and if you listened to metal it would be clear that Avenged Sevenfold's sound is nothing like modern metal. And the members themselves say that they are very influenced by Hard Rock and Punk. So let me say what I'm saying and shut up about what you don't know about. We write Wikipedia according to what reliable sources (mainstream, professional publications) say, and we write it so that general audiences can understand it. It’s not where people come to flex their own personal heavy metal knowledge. That’s fundamentally not what Wikipedia is. If you want to profess your personal viewpoints on metal and argue over who’s the biggest metal head, or which bands are “real metal” or “the most metal” or whatever, go find a metal themed wikia or fansite or messageboard or whatever. Don’t do it here. Go to Encyclopaedia Metallum or something. Sergecross73 msg me 14:11, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

Yeah, I don't have high expectations but do think it could end up being somewhat decent. Jim Carrey looks spot on as Eggman, and although Sonic looks pretty damn weird it's not as bad as I thought he'd look. A plot synopsis did leak a little while ago (I won't link to it because spoilers) and it's not stupid or derivative, which is good. It's nbd. I'm not going to take issue with misgendering as a result of ignorance. - Bryn (talk) (contributions) 22:47, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
My thoughts:
  • I like that it leans closer to acceptable examples ( Green Hill Zone, World 1-1) rather than terrible ones (anything on the Souls (series) template).
  • It does read like an encyclopedia article, not just a wikia entry to a summary of what it looks like, as many poor examples do.
  • I would personally change the order of some things. The Ocarina of Time 3D section talks a lot about the fixing of its shortcomings, but most of the shortcomings aren't introduced until the following section. The should probably be defined before resolutions are introduced.
  • Yeah, I'm mainly in the beta/concept stage, I still have a lot of reordering and tightening to do yet.
  • I didn't do a source check, but I hope that there are some sources that are completely dedicated to the subject, or cover it in significant detail, or otherwise you may get some heat from the same people who's flimsy character articles you advocated merging. (I wouldn't advocate merge, though I generally done believe levels need spinouts either, so I don't know how good of a defense I could write up either. Sadly, it isn't quite as iconic as something like Green Hill or World 1-1.)
  • I do actually have a few in the article that are specifically about the Water Temple!
Overall, its looking pretty good so far. Sergecross73 msg me 23:37, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
Okay, good, just making sure. Sergecross73 msg me 02:13, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

System 16 - reliable?

Hey, no issues to report here. Just wanted to check if System 16 could be considered a reliable source for articles. It's basically a database for arcade game hardware, mainly for those by Namco and Sega. I didn't see it anywhere over on VGS:S, so I went over to you to verify if it's good for using in articles. I intend to use it on the Namco System 22 article to hopefully have it get Good Article status someday, and I've also seen this site used on multiple Good Article-marked pages (ex. Ridge Racer (video game)), but if it's deemed unreliable I'll avoid it entirely. Namcokid47 ( talk) 23:59, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

Are they of any relation to Sega 16? That’s listed as situational/use in limited capacity. I was confusing it as that before I started looking into it. Sergecross73 msg me 12:29, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
They have no relation to Sega-16 as far as I know. Namcokid47 ( talk) 12:31, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
As far as I can tell, it just looks like some guy's personal blog, so my take would be that it’s not really looking like an RS. You can always ask at WP:VG/S if you want a second opinion though. Sergecross73 msg me 03:29, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
I've submitted a post on this page here to get a consensus on this. Thanks in advance. Namcokid47 ( talk) 03:41, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, - Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – May 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2019).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • XTools Admin Stats, a tool to list admins by administrative actions, has been revamped to support more types of log entries such as AbuseFilter changes. Two additional tools have been integrated into it as well: Steward Stats and Patroller Stats.

Arbitration

  • In response to the continuing compromise of administrator accounts, the Arbitration Committee passed a motion amending the procedures for return of permissions ( diff). In such cases, the committee will review all available information to determine whether the administrator followed "appropriate personal security practices" before restoring permissions; administrators found failing to have adequately done so will not be resysopped automatically. All current administrators have been notified of this change.
  • Following a formal ratification process, the arbitration policy has been amended ( diff). Specifically, the two-thirds majority required to remove or suspend an arbitrator now excludes (1) the arbitrator facing suspension or removal, and (2) any inactive arbitrator who does not respond within 30 days to attempts to solicit their feedback on the resolution through all known methods of communication.

I've had it

What do do? ANI? Lost cause? Popcornduff ( talk) 12:01, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Yeah, I don’t know either. ANI is a 50/50 crapshoot in any situation, and this is a bit complicated, so I fear we’d get unhelpful drive by commentary. (“This is a content issue, don’t bring it to ANI, etc). It may be a lost cause. I’m still under the impression that it won’t last long, for the same reasons we both have concerns on it - it’s kind of a rambling tangent. Any cleanup effort would trim it down or delete it. Sergecross73 msg me 19:35, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I think it's likely to stay purely for the reason that the article doesn't see much editing traffic. I'm the only person to have done any significant work on it for years, when I rewrote it from scratch about a year ago. Most articles on music production and hardware are in terrible shape and don't attract the sort of TLC that, eg, games stuff do. Popcornduff ( talk) 02:20, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

Hello once again. I just became aware of the situation on the List of music considered the worst article regarding Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band a few minutes ago. As an onlooker, I'm concerned about the potentially disruptive editing on the talk page and I'm thinking about trying to help bring order to it. Also, what's the best way to solve the situation: should we open a dispute resolution discussion or ask an uninvolved administrator for intervention? Thanks, Lord Sjones23 ( talk - contributions) 04:36, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for taking note of it, and for your concern, but I don’t want to rope you into all this. I think most options would just lead to more arguing. It’ll probably be good to get an uninvolved admin to close it someday, but their recent forum shopping seems to have made the discussion more active again, so I don’t know if it’s time for that yet or not. Sergecross73 msg me 14:54, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
So, should the users who are the forum shopping be reported to WP:ANI? Lord Sjones23 ( talk - contributions) 22:42, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
Nah, I think they’re being more “difficult” than “disruptive”. And the ill-advised forum shopping discussion is pretty much dead on arrival anyways. And with most of them, their every edit in the last month or two has been on nothing but the Beatles entry on the list. At some point, the discussion will end, and the entry will be removed, or retained, and they’ll disappear. These guys are a little more annoying then most, but it’s the same cycle that happens over and over again on these lists. They make a stink over their preferred entry, but lose interest quickly. Sergecross73 msg me 23:07, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
Oh, well... They were probably just being contentious. Maybe we'll just have to wait for the dust to settle before I might close that discussion and provide a summary of what has happened. Lord Sjones23 ( talk - contributions) 23:24, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

Sorry to bring this up, but could you take a look at the recent edits of User:Internet Informant, who you have interacted with before. They have made this edit which seems to be a repeat of previous disruptive editing from this user. Thanks, Railfan23 ( talk) 03:54, 13 May 2019 (UTC)

Apologies for the disruptions; I wasn’t intending to do such a thing: I wasn’t aware that characters couldn’t be classified as memes. I wasn’t meaning for it to be disruptive and I know the Wikipedia community can be very sensitive when it comes to stuff relating to devoted fandoms. I’m just trying to add to the body of knowledge, not trying to disrupt anything. Is there something I’m missing here, User:Sergecross73? Internet Informant ( talk) 18:14, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
If you are agreeing to stop then we’re fine, it’s just that the recent example Railfan provided is awfully similar to the edit that got you blocked last July, where you categorized a Star Wars film as an “internet meme”, which on a whole, is very wrong. Category mistakes generally aren’t that big of a deal, but the issue was how many times myself and another admin had to warn and block you over this last year for repeatedly ignoring the warnings. Drafting a complaint about behavior of SNAAAAKE!!

Hey, I was just wondering if I could talk to you about how to go about bringing up an issue with SNAAAAKE!!'s conduct - aside from just edit warring, also engaging in disruptive editing. Namely edits relating to his frequent belligerent complaints about articles either not existing or about why X has an article but not Y. - Bryn (talk) (contributions) 04:10, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

Is he still doing that stuff? I thought he had stopped once I started archiving his complaints on WT:VG. I guess he's doing it elsewhere?
Regardless, one avenue could be bringing it up with Atsme ( talk · contribs), who agreed to be his coach/mentor upon his unblock a year ago. I'd say she has a higher success rate with getting through to him than any other editor I've known. But just know that, no offense to her, she is very much so "in his corner" - she'd be helpful in getting through to him, but not someone who's going to work towards a block, topic ban, or anything like that. Still, I'd probably recommend this route, as any AN/ANI discussions related to Snake/Niemti, outside of the 1RR one I started yesterday, has spiraled out of control with arguing, heated debates, etc - for days on end. Atsme is probably the best route. And I can help too, as I have the same complaint as you do, I just hadn't brought it up because I thought it had stopped... Sergecross73 msg me 13:40, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
I was considering that as an option, yeah. I'm less saying "threaten a band if they keep doing it," but trying to get SNAAAAKE!! to like, not. Here's the example that prompted me to catalog the behavior: [1] - Bryn (talk) (contributions) 13:58, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
Yes, I agree your sentiment at that discussion, it really sounds like one of those "but when's International Men's Day" comments, or like the [Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:WikiProject Men recently struck down "Wikiproject Men" proposal]. Though I personally don't think that one was disruptive per se - I think it was in good-faith, albeit misguided. Definitely not a good new article or restructure proposal, but it felt like constructive at least. My issue was more the ones at WT:VG, like this one, where he was essentially just trying to berate the community into making various articles he felt should exist. Ah, that's a shame. The very reason I liked it was that I thought that maybe you had found a way to make what I thought would probably be a challenging subject to get dedicated sources on. I know you or ProtoDrake sometimes dig up sources better than I can find. I know the feeling though, I'd like to make Serge (Chrono Cross), Kid (Chrono Cross), Fiora (Xenoblade), or Estelle Bright, but the sources just aren't there for them either... Sergecross73 msg me 14:24, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

Ah, that'd be cool if you can get any of those into a publishable state. My wealth of recent "content-creation time" is about to come to a close due to stuff going on "in real life", so I don't know how much time I'd have to help build them, but I'd gladly help in looking over what you put together, and maintaining them forever, as I plan on being around and present and editing on Wikipedia until the end of time ;) Sergecross73 msg me 15:06, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

That efficiency has made it a lot easier to gather the sources that I have. I implemented it after finding that the Reliable/Situational Google searches were really limited and seemed to be outdated. - Bryn (talk) (contributions) 15:11, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

Thank you, I'll keep that in mind for the future. Yeah, it makes sense that the WP:VG Custom Search became outdated, I think it was primarily maintained by Thibbs (who I think has been relatively inactive in the last year or so) and Czar (who seems to have moved away from editing the VG content area). I still maintain a ton of VG articles, but have slowed down on creating articles in the last couple years upon seeing how poor song articles, especially in my interest area of rock music, were as far as article creation and writing. Sergecross73 msg me 15:28, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
I gotchu! Do what you can to do what you enjoy. Also, I found a little more hope in a Kid article, and possibly Lucca, Marle, Ayla, Flea, Serge, Lynx, and Harle. Fingers crossed! - Bryn (talk) (contributions) 17:08, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

Hey, I managed to get Lucca Ashtear split out (forgot she's the only one of the protagonists with a full name). When you get a chance, do you think you could help with the Appearances section? I've never been good about distinguishing between what is and isn't important to mention for a character's plot, haha. - Bryn (talk) (contributions) 03:03, 1 June 2019 (UTC)

Very nice, it looks great!! Especially the development info - I’m a super fan but I don’t know if I ever knew about the “bride” part in the JP version. I’m afraid I don’t really know how to write “appearances” sections either though. If you look at my main character article creations - Shulk and Lin Lee, I don’t write much more beyond the typical short description they’d put in a game manual or spoiler-free preview. I spend all my time on the Dev/creation/reception sections, since those are what prevent being redirected... Sergecross73 msg me 00:56, 2 June 2019 (UTC)
Me neither! The next step is to actually, properly source the info - much of it is chronocompendium stuff. I actually have a lot in the chute, sources gathered for the five other CT characters (and none for Crono because I didn't realize he didn't have one anymore lol). - Bryn (talk) (contributions) 05:03, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

Your thoughts on an article

Can I get your opinion on how User:New Age Retro Hippie/Water Temple is coming along? - Bryn (talk) (contributions) 18:02, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

Yes, I will give it a read through in a bit. Congrats on the new name, though it’ll be weird, since I’ve known you as NARH for so long. Also, I apologize if I’ve misgendered you lately or in the past. Sergecross73 msg me 20:09, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

Someone removed the original message you meant to remove shortly after too, so it all worked out just fine in the end. Thanks for checking though. Sergecross73 msg me 12:30, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

Unbelievably bad choice. You guys need to calm down with the forumshopping. They dont fit in these venues... Sergecross73 msg me 11:54, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

Edea

Also I noticed that you noticed my Edea userspace. Unfortunately I've got an Edea source drought, so I don't think I'll be able to put it out into mainspace. Still got a catalog of projects to work on though. - Bryn (talk) (contributions) 14:00, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

Yeah, Kid had a disappointly low number of sources in my search. I'm really hoping I can eek Lucca across the finish line, and I'm mostly confident in Frog, Robo, Magus, and Lavos getting articles. - Bryn (talk) (contributions) 14:58, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
Understandable! I'm going to be increasingly busy with trans stuff myself, but lately I've just had an itch to create articles, especially about ones that people may not have thought to try. And by the way, I have a pretty solid method to search RSes/SSes quickly:
