User:BlaccCrab is back

Hey Serge and @ Ferret: Just letting you know that BlaccCrab is back after being blocked on 68.134.190.154 at 98.117.49.13. Ferret can privately confirm this is BlaccCrab but I know it can't be publicly revealed for privacy and that's not what I'm asking for. IP geolocates to Maryland; same topic area of country and rock songs; removing content regarding what's a "promo single" and what's not here. The edit summaries are very much BlaccCrab's style [1] [2]. Ss 112 19:50, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

I don't know if that enough for me to take DUCK action - that all seems possible, but also very much so like many rude/misguided music-related editors. Perhaps ferret can help you with his powers. Sergecross73 msg me 18:09, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello. I saw your posts at AN/I and on the user's talk page. I was planning to post that here when I started writing it, as you're familiar with the user. But when I found the SPI, it seemed a bit much; I didn't wish to impose, and thought extra eyes might help. Cheers, BlackcurrantTea ( talk) 18:42, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Yeah, FYI, feel free to come to me directly first in situations like this, so we can avoid the chaos of ANI. As long as it's active, I was going to wait and see if there was any point, but if there's no dissenting opinions, I'll probably indef him. Sergecross73 msg me 22:09, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. An indef does look like the only way out here. Dissenting opinions seem unlikely. BlackcurrantTea ( talk) 01:42, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, you're right. I'll issue the blocks and you can archive your ANI post and we can just have it all wrapped up. Sergecross73 msg me 01:47, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Blocked, and archived the discussion. (Don't know why I asked you to do that.) Sergecross73 msg me 01:58, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
I could do with a bit of practice. I so rarely close discussions, I have to read the template docs every time. Thanks for getting this sorted quickly. BlackcurrantTea ( talk) 06:28, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
@ BlackcurrantTea and Sergecross73: I'm super confused. The SPI case here has mostly people saying that he's definitely confirmed, and one with a nonsensical conclusion that there's no evidence of abuse. So why isn't there a template on each of the three users' talk pages saying they're at least suspected sockpuppets and name the sockmaster? — Smuckola (talk) 10:01, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
Smuckola, from posts in various places on the topic of socks, I learned that some admins (both checkusers and not) prefer that the user pages not be tagged, so I leave it up to the blocking admin(s). Aside from WP:DENY-ing LTAs, whether or not to tag them seems to be a matter of personal taste. It's less convenient, but the information is often on the blocked user's contributions page. BlackcurrantTea ( talk) 22:12, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
Yes, that's all it is. I don't usually spend time tagging socks. I won't stand in anyone's way though. Feel free to tag them. I don't know if all admin feel this way, but I don't care if anyone tags them as such when it's relatively clear that that's the reason I blocked them. Hello, I just wanted to thank you for undoing my edit. My initial thought was to be bold and remove inclusions of sources that did not have any explanation provided, but the more I consider it, I think you're right that there should be more discussion there before removing them outright. Thank you for your revert, I'm sorry for any inconvenience I may have caused. JeffSpaceman ( talk) 23:56, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

No worries at all. For the record, I do "practice what I preach" too. Years back I went through and started discussions for a bunch of the entries on there today. It got tedious after a while, so I stopped. But I'd be happy to help if you'd like to work on it some again. Sergecross73 msg me 00:05, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
I appreciate you offering assistance. Would it be OK if I add explanations for some of the blank sources based on what I find in discussions, or even from the sources themselves? Your edit summary actually prompted me to go to metalwani to see what qualifies that source as unreliable (so much so that it's on the spam blacklist), and I think it's worth pointing out that it does not provide any authorship for its articles and appears to be a content farm. However, do you think this is a good idea? JeffSpaceman ( talk) 00:19, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, I think that generally works. Here's what I had done. I'd open up a discussion on WT:VG. I'd say "I'm trying to get start a discussion on this source so we have a more concrete consensus on it. I don't think Metalwani should be considered a reliable source. They seem to be an amateur blog with writers that don't have any credentials." Then wait and see what people say. And if there's a consensus (or no opposition) then add a link to the conversation on its entry at WP:RSMUSIC or WP:NOTRSMUSIC with some notes from the discussion.
You could just add your own notes, but you might get some opposition from others if they don't agree. If you write the notes as a summary of the discussion, it's a lot harder for anyone to oppose it. Sergecross73 msg me 01:33, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
OK, thanks for the feedback. This has been very helpful, thank you! JeffSpaceman ( talk) 02:33, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Atari 2600 games list a mess.

Hey Serge,

Look at the talk page for the 2600 games there is a lot of discussion about why the list is split into 3 sections on the same article.

The first being the Atari/Sears published games

The other about games made by third party publishers (which NO other lists does!)

The other about homebrew games (which I have no problem with but if it gets too many just make a seperate list of homebrew games in its own article.

So is there any way to bring this up to a higher up or something like we did with the merge NES and Famicom games? NakhlaMan ( talk) 04:54, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

I can start a discussion for you at WT:VG if you want, but the article doesn't seem to be very actively maintained, or have any experienced editors watching over it, so you might be able to just be WP:BOLD and just go for it. Your call. Let me know. Sergecross73 msg me 18:04, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

I started off with a warning - page protection probably wouldn't work like you'd want it to - its not a brand new account or an IP, so protecting it either wouldn't lock them out of the article, or higher protection would lock you out of it too. Let's see if they engage in any discussion first and take it from there. Sergecross73 msg me 18:02, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

  • Hey Serge. Would you be able to protect Bewitched (Laufey album)? There's an IP editor who doesn't appear to be editing on the same range each time they edit who's changing the genre from what the source says and has done so three times in the past several days now. The issue here is the musician and YouTuber Adam Neely did a video on the singer Laufey being called "jazz" in which he took issue with her being considered jazz as she doesn't meet the "criteria" laid down by jazz historians and disputed what "non-jazz reviewing critics" have described her latest album as. I don't particularly care what she's considered, but I'm sticking to the source(s). So obviously his viewers (including this persistent IP editor) have come here and taken issue with the genre on her latest album and are not following WP:BRD or WP:STICKTOSOURCE. NinjaRobotPirate has given them a final warning since you've written this, and I think that's probably the same thing I would have done. Yes, "Linus" needs to start using sources, but their edits appear to be both in good-faith and not-very-prolific (3 edits this week, 50 edits in about 5 months) so I'd rather not jump to blocking yet.
sorry, I must have missed your email. I protected the page because that IP seemed disruptive regardless of who they are, but I'm not super familiar with this sock, so I may not be a great go-to on this one in a general sense... Sergecross73 msg me 13:00, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

Where did Linus go, Charlie Brown? ( talk · contribs) Regarding this user again, NinjaRobotPirate blew off enforcing anything as usual, and this editor is just robotically unstoppable and uncommunicative. I agree that his edits were disruptive, but things like "amount of disruption" and "level of good faith/bad faith intention" are factors that play into how to handle disruptive editors. Yes, his edits were not great, and he was not engaging in discussion. But he wasn't prolific, toxic, POV-pushing, or creating damaging BLP violations. His edits skewed far closer to "clueless" than "malicious". Sergecross73 msg me 19:02, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

This is definitively WP:TENDENTIOUS WP:NOTHERE WP:CIR. He did drive-by nominations and rejections of Good articles; [3] see his talk page for the blithely defiant discourse where he's stringing people along, pretending to instruct them, and putting on airs of magical authority, with self-contradictions. Then just refusing to justify his unilateral edicts. He wrote a gibberish fake essay against making citations, in total hypocrisy of everything he pretended to lecture his GA victims about, by trying to lay out a nonsensical strategy that advocates maximal laziness in wrecking the encyclopedia and ignoring or redefining its base concepts. [4] He constantly tells everyone that he's constitutionally incapable of finding sources (like he can't operate google?), but sends warnings and AfD's to everybody else for not citing. [5] More rambling against competency. [6] He created at least one garbage article with no content, and junk citations, in total hypocrisy of his fake essay. This is just plain nuts to chastise someone just for sending him a welcome message, but especially while also sending tons of welcome messages to other users. [7] He randomly and wrongly renamed an article while admitting in the edit message that it is pointless. [8] [9] He wildly and baselessly accused me of vandalism [10] for simply reverting the abuser you had just blocked. [11] He demoted 3dfx!!!!!!

This is definitively WP:TENDENTIOUS WP:NOTHERE WP:CIR.
