Are we sure that George Frater's quotation of Richard Baldwin is well sourced? I hope he didn't just rip it off the internet. His book doesn't show a source for that quote. C5mjohn ( talk) 16:10, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
- If you do a Google book search for the quotation, i think you will find it in multiple books. Hard to imagine that a lot of folks are putting out books with a false quote, when it is such a well-known and for some, controversial quotation. I've been trying for years to find photographs; I really do want a few on the page - it adds a lot! I've tried to figure out how to do it, but it is beyond my computer abilities. Hi. I continue to work on the Granite, CO article. At first I was frustrated by the lack of information but I have come to realize that Granite's early demise has given me a great opportunity to present a tiny history of Colorado, which is rich indeed. Then too, almost nobody reads that article so I have a great deal of freedom to write as I please; it is good to take a break from the other articles I watch which attract a great deal of lobbying efforts from corporate interests (which seems, to me, to have increased a great deal of late).
Anyway, reading your gandy dancer research I thought I'd try google book research as you have done. Bingo! Found some good info that I can use not only for the article, but to provide better references than what I've been using. But I have run into a problem. Would you please check ref #6. It is so long that it has stretched the page out. Is there a better way to add these book refs? Also, while you are there would you take a look at the discussion page regarding photos. The Denver library has a good photo of a sluice box I'd sure like to use (info at bottom of page re my wiki help inquiry). In your experience, should I just give up on that one?
I see that you have done a great deal of work to support our unions. I have always been a strong supporter, in fact even as a teen Eugene Debs was my first hero. Actually, I chose the name "gandy dancer" because I feel so strongly that people can work together with love and joy, and would were it not for the greed of the few at the top. I read your article about the Leadville strike and did wonder if Granite was affected at all. I do know that almost from the start, individual miners were forced out in Granite (as elsewhere) as money from the East took over and miners quickly became over-worked, under-paid laborers. So if you see any information that could be used in the Granite article, please add it.
I have asked for help adding photos from a friend in Wales. He's smart, a photographer, and computer-savvy, but he's never edited wikipedia and I am afraid that I may have asked too much of him. While current events in the US may be fantastically exciting—the purpose of this project is the construction of an encyclopaedia, and talk pages ought to be used to discuss improvements to articles rather than the content of the article. I feel deeply for your problem, but note that there are many many advantages of compressing refs, least of all for maintenance purposes. If you are working on an article you recently created, I would suggest that you might avoid the problems you are experiencing by keeping it in userspace until it is in an advanced state. Alternatively, using {{ nobots}} on the page will stop bots from visiting your page. When dealing with a 'compressed' article, instead of reverting, you can still locate the 'mother' of a compressed ref by performing a string search; if you dislike the 'autogenerated1912' you can always search and replace such strings with more meaningful names. It was recently suggested that WikiProject Colorado, to which you are a member, may be inactive or semi-active and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project it appears that there haven't been much active discussion on the talk page in some time and the only content updates appear to be simple maintenance so being supported by a larger project might be beneficial. I have begun a discussion on the projects talk page to see how the members of the project feel about this suggestion. I'm trying to get people who are willing to help me out with a pet project I've begun but realised that it will be extremely hard for me to even make a small dent in. First of all, I got your name from the list of active members on the wikiproject for mining articles. Please disregard this, if you're not interested.
So, here's what I'm trying to do and what you could do to help me. I noticed that there were very few articles that list mines. I've tried (to the best of my abilities) to create a sub-page that lists all of the probable articles for lists of mines that I could think of, you can review this here.
Basically, I need help. Suggestions on different lists to add, I need lists created, if the lede I've been using should be changed, I'd like community consensus on the standard layout (I've been going with listing articles like List of gold mines by country and List of mines in the United States by output. If someone would like to make templates for these articles.
Please, don't feel obligated. I came to you, and others like you because of your implied interest in mining articles. List articles are not exactly in everyone's taste. If you are completely uninterested, but think you might know someone who might be, please let them know about it. I could use all the help I can get.
