I was searching around on different WikiProject pages and came across Wikipedia:WikiProject Russia which has a really cool layout and utilizes nav boxes for their lists of info. Something that can be messed with in the future, after the main WSPA Template is made. I'm also going to make a quick list of the three WSPA DYK articles on the project page, because I've noticed a few project pages show off what articles of theirs have been featured/DYK/etc. Once you have the WSPA template and tag the IUPUI collection, it'll pull together nicely. I know a few people have been updating the Artwork Infobox Template - I don't know if this is spurred by the conference or just happenstance, either way, it's great people are working on it still. However, some of my articles now have broken links and I've been trying to fix them - in doing so I found that I have no clue what's going on with the new dimensions system. Before it was relatively straight forward and I could explain it to people (even the brave high schooler?) - not so anymore. Not pertinent this very second, but - help? My long term goal is to make that article complete by (a) scanning all the rest of the photographs in the Hendricks catalog and (b) adding and scanning everything from the Foster catalog.

Forgive my English on your talk page, but I can write so very little French. I wonder if you'd consider having a more formalized role with WSPA and becoming part of the project leadership. The project is starting to take off a bit again. We now how folks in Indianapolis, Milwaukee, and Washington D.C. making articles about public art in Wikipedia.

Would you like to have a link to your project on the main page of our project, like we've done for the others?

Also, it'd be super cool if there were a project notice in French and a Userbox. We invite you to use or modify these. Likewise, we'd be thrilled to have a French WSPA barnstar. I'm not really sure how to link that over here in this encycopedia.

But it would be great to have you more formally on board with the project. I'm not indicating that you'd actually have to do more work, but perhaps simply provide a point of contact for others in FR WP that are interested in doing WSPA work.

I think the goalposts may have moved during your public art project: see Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style_(visual_arts)#Italic_titles. The MOS, a guideline, is out of step with WP:Article titles, a policy. So all the Statehouse statues etc should have italic titles, as far as I can see! And I've now discovered that the {{ italic title}} template is subtle enough to italicise the main title but not the disambiguation in brackets. Neat. I hadn't seen that template before. It's a "template" in a different sense of the word from normal WP usage, and I wonder whether it's a good thing - does it make it too easy for someone to produce a shambolic article? Setting that aside, I think the italicisation should probably be in {{ Infobox artwork}}, as it already is in {{ Infobox book}} etc. I've left a message at Template_talk:Infobox_artwork#Italicization. That template not only keeps the articles somewhat standardized, but works to teach users on what they should be looking for to create an article about public art. What they mean is that there is a separate category hierarchy in Commons, and images uploaded there should use those categories, not Wikipedia categories. I'm going to be using a category tree for the Children's Museum images - - all in Commons, not here in Wikipedia. This issue has come up a lot and consensus has continually favored against categorizing on both projects because it doubles the effort for little gain. Hey Richard, thanks for your note. I'd be glad to explain what I meant. While the article is certainly very well-sourced and has lots of potential, its tone in some places is not encyclopedic. This is easy to fix though, here are the main issues I see:

• WARNING - Cleaning methods that involve heat may be dangerous to silver tableware such as candlesticks or knife handles. - This sounds like a how-to guide or instruction manual. It would make more sense if you removed "WARNING".
• The second paragraph of the "Lacquering" section, using phrases like "Gloves should be worn at all times", reads like an instruction manual.
• In some spots, you write words using all capital letters, which is distracting. See for example, RED and BLUE compounds.
• Your article dives right into the subject matter, which is admirable in some ways, but you need to comply with Wikipedia's guidelines on lead sections. See Conservation of ivory for an example of what your lead could look like.

Once you address these issues and resubmit, another reviewer (not myself) will check it out for any issues I missed, and it should be accepted. :) -- Cerebellum ( talk) 21:46, 18 March 2012 (UTC) reply

You object to the closure. Mike Selinker is an Admin, and a consnesus was emerging at the end of the CFD debate. He was entiteld to close the discussion as he did. Since this is not a deletion DRV is not the appropriate route. If you do not like the result, the appropriuate course is to open a new CFD to move it back. List of monuments of the Gettysburg Battlefield. An annon editor just added a bunch of okay info but also removed most of the pictures of most of the monuments and made the layout more of a hell than Little Round Top. I contacted an admin who was not much help. I'd spent millions of hours getting it to the point where it was when you last edited there. Do you mind taking a look and offering an opinion? I asked a random admin about it and he mentioned how to undo it, but then added, "but he has done some good work", or something. This left me unsure about how to proceed. I wrote to the one editor who had posted after the big change and have not heard back from him. His edits will also be lost if an UNDO happens. He might be in a very different time zone. I'm in one of those sort of depressed, do I really give a f**k moods that follow this sort of thing. Typically I rally after a bit and just do the work. Thanks for getting back to me. I think I have a working Navbox template now: Template:Indianapolis Museum of Art artworks. I wasn't sure if there were categories for the outdoor works so I left out subcategories for them, but the rest are classified by the department listed for each in the IMA collection database. There were three that didn't technically have an associated collection on the IMA site though so I added them where they should be, but I don't know if you will want that changed or not. They are: Guardian figure, Healing of Abiku Children, Helmet mask (Tatanua). Nice work! You're pretty awesome at this. I was trying to figure out how to add the template that I made for outdoor artworks to this ... or do you think they should all be merged and then sorted by department? Template:IMAart. I think that the lists should be separate because by having the outdoor works distinct, one can find them by their GPS coordinates. Thanks :) I hadn't seen your outdoor works template, but I definitely think it looks better your way. I like the categories as you have them broken down, and I'm thinking it might be bwtter to keep the seperation between indoor and outdoor works. There is such a large difference in artistic styles between indoor and outdoor that I think merging them all might deter some viewers. Great! I've asked another friend to look into it. It's called "nesting" a template. If they are nested, than if someone edits the outdoor one, it would automatically appear in the regular one. I nested the second template just to see what it would look like, but I can't figure out how to format the parameters. I have tried everything I could find to try and nest only a portion of the template, but I can't get it to work (even though the Help pages say it should be possible). In any event, I did one more quick edit to change it to a single template with subcategories. Richard, as I was creating the Face mask (We people) page I discovered that there is a stub page for the Krahn (some sources lump the Wee in with this ethnic group), but there is no page for the Wee people. Anyhow, I want to try and create a separate page for this group so I can link to it on the Face mask collection item page, but I'm curious to know if I am allowed to use the Face mask image on this other page in lieu of an image of the Wee people. It would obviously be captioned to cite the IMA, but I wasn't sure if this would be considered appropriate usage of the image file. Any guidance you can offer would be appreciated. In short, yes. But I recommend you become familiar with the Wikipedia:Image use policy. This is useful not only for understanding how images can be used in WP, but also for understanding copyright law as it relates to images of artworks -- this is good to know working in museums. Hi Richard, I have a question: is it possible to gather further descriptive information for the wine vessel either through IMA handbook/catalog publications or through some form of consultation with a staff member at the museum? The Chinese vessel I'm working on clearly depicts some type of animal on the lid, which looks similar to the battle-horned dragon of a guang at the [ Brooklyn Museum] and the handle looks like part of a creature as well, but I can't tell if it is a bird like the one on a guang at the [ Metropolitan Museum of Art], or something else. The IMA collection description is pretty limited on this one and I would love to be able to offer a more in-depth description for the Wikipedia article. I will message Zambonia to see if her handbook has something additional, but if not, are there any other options open for these types of situations? Hi Richard, it appears someone has gone in and changed the name of our Ritual wine server article to Ritual wine server (''guang''), Indianapolis Museum of Art, 60.43. This unfortunately means that all links to the original article now link to a generic ritual wine server page. Plus, he removed the bold text the headed up the first paragraph that is typical of all Wiki pages. I understand why he made the title change since it would be too confusing given the generic page, but it throws off our page and makes it lack the same cohesive design as all our other pages. Do you by chance have a recommendation for a better name for our article so that we can mark the two pages distinct without making the title look so cluttered? The title is fine, and many of the IMA objects have disambiguated titles, and others, life "Storage jar" would need them if the articles were created. I have piped the main incoming links & the others can easily be done. There is in fact no requirement to repeat and bold the article title in the lead - see WP:LEAD. I see you have done a few such moves, probably in reponse to my earlier edits on some of these articles. Was this discussed anywhere? Prima facie: a) the new titles are likely to puzzle some readers, and b) it seems unencyclopedic to restrict a stub to one particular copy of an edition. This is against guidelines for books and prints, which is perhaps a rather different situation, but the case needs to be made. It would normally be absurd to have this and Throwback (1/3), Throwback (2/3) as different articles, unless there were special reasons, for example with LOVE (Indianapolis). There isn't a clear convention; it partly depends how famous the artist is, but in general eg Deposition of Christ (Fra Angelico) is preferred for art. But Throwback (Smith) isn't much help to readers, nor, imo, Throwback (3/3). In this case Throwback (sculpture) works best, again imo. See WP:VAMOS for more. I see that you added a WikiProject NRHP banner to Talk:Cummins Corporate Office Building. Was this a mistake? Hi! Since Conservation & restoration has its own subcat of the Art history and also Category:Museology, per WP:OCAT the individual articles should not also be in the parent cats. Articles should only be in one level of the tree. Equally, Category:Museum collections is only for articles on individual collections, not topical articles. Actually it's WP:SUBCAT that applies, which says: "Apart from certain exceptions (i.e. non-diffusing subcategories, see below), an article should be categorised as low down in the category hierarchy as possible, without duplication in parent categories above it. In other words, a page or category should rarely be placed in both a category and a subcategory or parent category (supercategory) of that category (unless the child category is non-diffusing – see below – or eponymous). For example, the article "Paris" need only be placed in "Category:Cities in France", not in both " Category:Cities in France" and " Category:Populated places in France". Because the first category (cities) is in the second category (populated places), readers are already given the information that Paris is a populated place in France by it being a city in France."

I notice that these articles all seem to be in far too many levels just within the "Conservation and restoration" tree, but are not in obvious categories they should be in - eg "Conservation and restoration of archaeological sites" is not in ANY archaeological category, despite the fact it clearly relates at least as much to that tree as to the museum tree. Likewise the Smithsonian one was not in the Smithsonian tree. The same for the clocks, copper, fresco categories. This shows a "secret garden" mentality, of not thinking about the integration of this material into the wider project. It also reduces the visibility of the articles, since these trees will get far more traffic than the "Conservation and restoration" tree.

Btw, I don't, as you suggest a few sections above, "have my own way of doing things"; like other experienced Wikipedians I just understand the policies and apply them. When articles are added at several levels in a tree the categories just become clogged up and unusable. The "cultural heritage" category would be many thousand items long if everybody acted as you do. I'll do a couple of these articles correctly as examples (if you don't do the rest, at some point I or someone else will).

Btw, the big "Conservation and restoration" should be made more readable by piping the links, eg by turning "Conservation and restoration of wooden furniture" to "Conservation and restoration of wooden furniture|wooden furniture". It will then look a lot better. I've done A-C in the big section, wehich already looks a bit better.

The articles themselves seem excellent, btw!

Can I ask why you've depopulated Category:Art conservation and restoration? Surely, that is a well-defined subcategory of conservation and restoration, and equally surely, Category:Conservation and restoration is quite large. Sure, and thanks! It's too subjective and unnecessary. It is in fact not a well-define subcategory of conservation and restoration. Having it relate more generally to all cultural heritage, be it art or not art, is more appropriate. It will only make for confusion if some things are made art and some not. In the many years I've been working in Wikipedia, I've only seen one other conservator-restorer that edits, and he does so anonymously. I've had tons of interns, fellows, and grad students. I'm not sure who would be helpful here. But think of it this way: When does metal become "art" and when does it not? Or this way: many conservator-restorers don't work in museums but in a wide variety of heritage organizations around the world. I've come across several who edit sometimes, but often/usually not on conservation and restoration general topics. If you watch articles on specific artworks (which I suspect you don't much) it is apparent that many editors with such expertise contribute, mostly at low levels. You never know who will be editing. The category system has not had any problem identifying art in contexts other than restoration; if it was intended as art, it's art. If an article describes a restoration technique that is used beyond art, it belongs in the general category; otherwise, an art-specific subcategory, at least to me, is meaningful. The point, though, is not that I know anything about preservation, but that there's enough disagreement here to warrant seeking broader input. It certainly can't hurt.
