Mar 8: WikiWednesday Salon by Grand Central

Mar 8: WikiWednesday Salon by Grand Central
The gathering is in the vicinity of Grand Central Terminal.

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community and visitors from the global Wikimedia Foundation for our WikiWednesday Salon by Grand Central, in-person at Convene 101 Park Avenue in the vicinity of Manhattan's Grand Central Terminal. No experience of anything at all is required. All are welcome!

This is somewhat of a sequel to last year's Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Brunch in terms of the participants, though this time it is an evening event in a different borough.

We may leaven the event with a few impromptu lightning talks, a Wiki-fashion show (yes, really!), and likely an afterparty tour.

All attendees are subject to Wikimedia NYC's Code of Conduct. In addition, to participate in person you should be vaccinated and also be sure to respect others' personal space, and we may limit overall attendance size if appropriate.

5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Shortened Sections

Regarding Karni Mata article, these sections had been present on the article for months. Another editor objected to the lack of inline sources and removed them recently. Which is why I added required refs and also shortened them. Some of the size might be due to images. So, what should be done more? Krayon95 ( talk) 08:43, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

I see that you're restoring text not adding new text, so apologies. @ AirshipJungleman29: for input since he removed the content. -- RegentsPark ( comment) 18:59, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
The article fails to distinguish between real-life events and made-up legends, mixing historical information and hagiographical myths for the purpose of convincing naive people that the story described did happen (because it was a story, not an encylopedic article. Most of the article is, I note, still sourced to a book which states perfectly seriously in its second paragraph "On the authority of the Puranas and other holy texts, it can be said that Shakti has appeared in a human form whenever impiety exceeded limits and the world was in trouble...one of the most important of whom was Karniji") Scientific consensus must always overrule such adulatory religious fairytales. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 ( talk) 19:32, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
@ RegentsPark. I have added additional sources in all of the sections and more can still be added. I have retained the earlier source because of its wide use by modern authors including Harald Tambs-Lyche, Max Harcourt, Norman Ziegler, Anastasia Piliavsky, Ann Grodzins, etc. Krayon95 ( talk) 05:12, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
This is between you and AirshipJungleman29. If they accept your sources, no worries. If not, perhaps WP:DR?-- RegentsPark ( comment) 19:13, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
@ RegentsPark@ AirshipJungleman29. The reason for retaining the source is given, while more have already been added. If more corrective steps are to be taken regarding structure and text size before reinstating content, then please suggest them. Krayon95 ( talk) 08:06, 4 March 2023 (UTC)

Mahatma Gandhi

You were pinged by Fowler but you may haven't really observed it.

Would you like to resolve this dispute? I don't really feel like removing the disputed bit until we see more opinions in this regard.

Kindly read both Talk:Mahatma Gandhi#Misinformation on lead and Talk:Mahatma Gandhi#Final note for reaching conclusion. Thanks. Abhishek0831996 ( talk) 04:35, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

I did see Fowler's ping but am too busy in RL to read and comment on this. Apologies. -- RegentsPark ( comment) 05:10, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

Could you please restore the deleted article Rahul Chimanbhai Mehta in my user space

Hi, could you please tell me when this page will be moved in article space. thanks Info.apsharma ( talk) 09:43, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
When it is "substantially different" from the article that was deleted by a deletion discussion and when it resolves the deficiencies identified in that discussion. When you think it is ready, you can try pinging Vanjagenije, the admin who deleted it, to see if they're willing to move it into article space. -- RegentsPark ( comment) 13:21, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

Mughal empire

Hey Regents Park, there is a lot of problems in Mughal Empire article which contains a quite a lot of outdated information and mispresentation of facts especially in the demographics part which itself has been updated by Maddison himself. I hope you can remove the semi protected area and get me to fix the data with the updated information . 103.81.215.217 ( talk) 06:19, 27 May 2023 (UTC)

Indian Rebellion of 1857

Hello, I saw your revision on Indian Rebellion of 1857, and I wanted to ask why it's a problem of including the names parts before the detailed parts. Usually, articles that have other names of the topic will include sentences about having different names in the beginning part of the article. Other than that, I fixed changes such as the British EIC starting in India during 1600 CE, and not 1612. Thank you! No2WesternImperialism ( talk) 00:23, 6 June 2023 (UTC)

@ No2WesternImperialism: I've copied your comment over to Talk:Indian Rebellion of 1857 and will respond there. Best to discuss changes on article talk pages rather than on user pages. RegentsPark ( comment) 14:03, 6 June 2023 (UTC)

Request on source reliability

Hi, if you don't mind, could you comment on the reliability of Ranbir Singh Sandhu's book on this talk page [5]. We have already exercised the 3O option, and I have posted on the Noticeboard for India related topics (I haven't posted on the RSN as my two previous posts on there received zero engagement), but CanadianSingh1469 maintains his stance that Sandhu is a reliable source. Hopefully, your feedback can conclude things. Thanks. Southasianhistorian8 ( talk) 19:23, 10 June 2023 (UTC)

( talk page stalker) Copying below my comment on that source from April 2020:
The author Dr. Ranbir Singh Sandhu is referred to as "professor emeritus of Ohio State University", which is both true and misleading. Sandhu was a professor of Civil Engineering at OSU and his role is that of an activist and collator/translator of Bhindranwale 's speeches, and not of an academic in the relevant field. The speeches/conversations he collected and translated are a valuable primary source for scholars to study and analyze, and Sandhu has indeed been repeatedly acknowledged in secondary sources for these efforts; however, the primary material itself (ie, the speeches etc) should be cited with care (if at all) in a tertiary work like wikipedia and only when put in proper context provided by acceptable secondary sources. Additionally, the cited book appears to be self-published (in that I didn't find any references to the publisher "Sikh Educational & Religious Foundation" other than with regards to two of Sandhu's books) and afaik has received no academic or mainstream-press reviews; thus the commentary surrounding the speeches and conversations is perhaps not usable at all.

Risk Magazine

Dear RegentsPark, just wanted to make sure that you are aware of Risk Magazine which is a major peer-reviewed source for financial practitioners. You can inspect their publication standards here [6]. Please do not edit anything on finance if you are not aware of this source. It would be like editing physics pages not knowing about Physical Review Letters, or biology pages without ever opening an issue of Nature. 192.193.132.14 ( talk) 02:44, 9 June 2023 (UTC)

Dear IP. The issue is not with risk magazine but rather with your penchant for adding citations to an article by A. N. Sokalov. That is what is promotional. Are you A. N. Sokalov? RegentsPark ( comment) 14:41, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I am the author, and I am trying to include the material because it is relevant. Risk recycling is relevant to hedging. Remove the citation if my Russian name gives you chills but leave the content. BTW, "This article needs additional citations" is currently stated among the "multiple issues"; please bear this in mind in your witch hunting. 192.193.132.14 ( talk) 00:19, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
Please read Wikipedia's policy on conflicts of interest. You should not directly insert the citation into an article. Rather, propose the addition of the citation on the talk page, clearly indicating that a conflict of interest exists. RegentsPark ( comment) 00:41, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the policy reference. I'll study that. 192.193.132.13 ( talk) 02:24, 12 June 2023 (UTC)

Kashmiri edit war on sufism

Hi RP,

Can you also write to kashmiris page regarding the edit war on sufism which he started. He is refusing to engage about the topic also and has made multiple reverts on the sufism page Galaxy21ultra ( talk) 19:19, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi @ Galaxy21ultra:. I assume Kashmiri is already aware of edit warring so didn't drop a message on their page but, since you're relatively new, figured you should know. Neither of you have crossed any boundaries yet so this is just an awareness message. No worries (as yet!). RegentsPark ( comment) 20:41, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
Actually, I notice you reverted again and you're at the boundary right now. I suggest you read WP:3RR carefully! RegentsPark ( comment) 20:43, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
Yes I will not do so again. It was just because Kashmiri reverted the page and removed sources again. I don't know how to put a temp block request on someone, please can you do so on him, as it is multiple times he has removed authentic sources. And is refusing to discuss the issue in detail, as I have asked them many times. Galaxy21ultra ( talk) 21:06, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
@ Galaxy21ultra: I guess your best option is to state your position on the article talk page. Other editors can then chime in and we'll get consensus on whether you or Kashmiri is right. Generally, if you're the one making a change, then it is incumbent on you to get consensus for your change. You can also check WP:DR for your options for dispute resolution. deleting topics from the talk page

so why exactly did you delete my topic from the TALK page that was created to TALK about the page where i pointed out wrong FACTS? the page was closed to editing

since when is it even allowed to just delete talk pages on the wiki? surely it wasn't 20 years ago 80.251.112.205 ( talk) 22:13, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

( relevant diff) Talk pages (see WP:TALK) are for discussing content on the page. Your comment did not seem to have anything to do with the article topic. If it does, perhaps you should explain yourself better. RegentsPark ( comment) 01:45, 15 June 2023 (UTC)
or perhaps you should actually read the article before just deleting TALK pages -- 80.251.112.205 ( talk) 07:57, 16 June 2023 (UTC)
IP, there is no reason you should assume someone will be able to connect the jargon-filled message you wrote with what is in the article. "aoe2", "HD", and "DE" will mean nothing to those not active on Age of Empires forums, and give the writing the appearance of random test text. CMD ( talk) 09:11, 16 June 2023 (UTC)
what lp? forums is something from 20 years ago, do they even exist anymore? anyone younger than 50 understands the >> current year most common vocabulary. the "HD" standard was literally introduced in 1980s. anyway here's the HD that is 4 and here's de that is 5 the games are similar, but not the same like gojira 1954 and godzilla 1998. and here the corresponding names of these products -- 80.251.112.205 ( talk) 02:44, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

Hello, RegentsPark,

This article has been moved around a lot lately with no redirect left so it has left a lot of broken redirects and red links on articles that link to a former page title. More importantly, there are four talk page archives that need to be moved as well. You can see one at Talk:Violence against Muslims in India/Archive 1. I hope you can take care of this. In general, when you move an article, it's wise to leave a redirect so these problems don't arise. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 22:06, 18 June 2023 (UTC)

@ Liz: I'm going to be AWOL for a bit so can't take care of this. You can recreate the redirects if you like but I'm not overly keen to have the "independant" misspelling lying around in an article title. I'll be back in July and can follow up then if that's ok. RegentsPark ( comment) 01:23, 19 June 2023 (UTC)

RP, if/when you are back can you take a look at the recent article history and recent talkpage discussion (see my latest comment for example])? Pinging @ Bishonen, Doug Weller, and Vanamonde93: in case they get the time to look at it before your return. Abecedare ( talk) 14:56, 1 July 2023 (UTC)

@ Abecedare: Looks like Black Kite has taken care of this. Right? -- RegentsPark ( comment) 16:49, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
Welcome back! Yes, that issue has settled for the moment.
Am discussing some related issues with Aryan330 at Talk:Battle of Pavan Khind and Talk:Battle of Umberkhind. Not sure they still understand WP:RS, WP:PRIMARY etc for history-related articles but don't see a need for requesting admin intervention for now. Abecedare ( talk) 16:58, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

@ RegentsPark The Statement "In a sham trial, he was found guilty of murder and violence, atrocities against the Muslims of Burhanpur and Bahadurpur in Berar by Marathas under his command" had no Historical Evidence to support it!
Even that times Mughal court historian Khafi Khan doesn't mentioned about the reason behind the execution of sambhaji!
Many renowned historians including Steward Gordon, Jadunath Sarkar,G.S.Sardesai mentioned that since he was tortured very brutally and after because of that he was finally executed.
Then why there is a statement which had no Historical background nor supported by any renowned historians?
Even the source which mentioned their doesn't says clearly that he was executed for this reason.
The statement "Sambhaji committed atrocities at Burhanpur and that s why he was executed" is literally not present in any source.
So we can only put their that "Sambhaji was tortured and executed on the orders on emperor" to avoid controversy by marking comtampory sources which I mentioned.
That's it Aryan330 ( talk) 02:13, 1 August 2023 (UTC)

I was browsing and saw that the page for Karna is protected. Looking through the page's history, it seems that it was protected by you because a user was sockpuppeting. Battle of Shivneri Fort

Hey @ RegentsPark I have just done my first reference review on page Battle of Shivneri Fort.I want your personal attention there for preventing Disruption as the creater of that article @عبدالرحمن4132,who didn't or didn't wanted to understand the issue. It seems like he is anaware of When I told him that Jadunath Sarkar's source is only source you provided for this article & that itself a pretty dated source & can't be acceptable. Mediation

Hi RegentsPark. Hope is all well. I was hoping you could provide some mediation, advice and elucidation on any applicable Wikipedia policies to consider for the issues below.

In the past year, there has been an influx of articles created pertaining to Sikh involved battles. See [7], [8], [9], and [10]. These articles were created primarily by Ronnie Macroni and CanadianSingh1469. Among some of the issues I've noticed, something I felt needed to be addressed with outside input is the heavy use of ostensible Google snippets to buttress the articles and the claims within them.

A few examples (of many): S Gajrani's book Guru Gobind Singh

Pritam Singh Gill's History of the Sikh Nation

Raj Pal Singh's The Sikhs: Their Journey of Five Hundred Years

Haroon Rashid's History of the Pathans: The Sarabani Pathans

I'm aware that some sources are costly or otherwise difficult to obtain and should not be rejected on that basis alone, but it's clear that these sources which are not to be found anywhere online were taken from Google Books snippets. CanadianSingh1469 admitted twice that he was using Google Snippets [11]-I was using a Google books excerpt. (regarding Ved Marwah's book) and [12]-For Terrorism in the Tarai I used this glitch (I think it is) where you can trick the Google snippet into giving most or the entire page of the book. One of his deleted articles relied very heavily on them as well- Battle of Manakpur. Are we allowed to use Google snippets, particularly to buttress claims regarding strength or casualty figures or battle outcomes?

Many of these articles also rely heavily on 18th century texts like Prachin Panth Prakash or from Raj era sources like Max Arthur Maculiffe, Lepel Henry Griffin or non historians like Surinder Singh Johar and Patwant Singh or non salient Sikh "academic institutions" like Sikh Missionary College and Institute of Sikh Studies, leading to articles which make outrageous claims such as Battle of Patti, Battle of Kartarpur and more, but also some more moderate articles that incorporate bad sourcing practices. Hopefully, this discussion will lead to these articles being cleaned up and some standards on how to proceed with future edits and articles. Southasianhistorian8 ( talk) 20:39, 26 August 2023 (UTC)

@ Suthasianhistorian8: I'm not sure I can help. I don't know much about Sikh history and don't have the time to go through articles to see if the sourcing is good or not. That said, 18th century sources (and 19th and early 20th) should be a definite no no and can probably be removed on sight. Google snippets are a harder problem since Wikipedia is littered with them. My suggestion would be to take a look at a few, try to follow up with the actual source to see if they've been taken out of context, and, if they have, use that to discredit other snippets from the same editor. If they haven't been taken out of context, then that editor is probably doing a good job. I'll try to take a look but, as I said, real life is keeping me busy and I probably won't get to any of this for a while. Perhaps Vanamonde3, Kautilya3, or Abecedare can help? RegentsPark ( comment) 23:32, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
Thanks RegentsPark, but one last question; assuming an editor only used a Google snippet as no other content within the book was available on any other platform (no further Google preview, the book not being available on the Internet Archive etc), would that be acceptable to use as a source on Wikipedia? Southasianhistorian8 ( talk) 00:06, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
You'll need to look at it on a case by case basis. For example this snippet looks okay for troop strengths, even without the context, as long as the author is a historian. If the author is not a historian, then the snippet should not be used. RegentsPark ( comment) 00:39, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
Hmm, I guess I disagree with that, because a snippet could be omitting important context; it's possible that the information was presented in a tertiary manner, merely relaying what a primary source stated without endorsing or disapproving the narrative, much like Grewal's book [13], it's possible the author critiques or presents contradictory information later on. In fact, I was involved (more as an outside party) in a lengthy discussion dealing with the synthesis of a full length book with a Google snippet, and it later turned out the snippet was taken out of context [14]. The article I nominated for deletion, Battle of Manakpur, was filled with the same sort of snippets, but the incident was deemed as a likely hoax, and most of the content was actually sourced from a local, vernecular newspaper. Southasianhistorian8 ( talk) 01:10, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
Also sorry about the misunderstanding, I meant to say this source/snippet- [15] instead of Harjinder Singh's work. Southasianhistorian8 ( talk) 01:22, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
I can't see that particular snippet, not sure why. I suggest you ask @ Kautilya3: for input. RegentsPark ( comment) 14:02, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

That snippet was wrong for the content. The correct snippet is tthis one. Neither this nor the Harjinger Singh's coverage gives any indication of where the information comes from. So it is not proper WP:HISTRS anyway. All kinds of folklore passes into "history".

I agree that snippets are bad for sourcing, but I can't see anyting in Wikipedia policies that prohibits them. -- Kautilya3 ( talk) 14:54, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

List articles

Hi, Political families of India, do list article like this, which already have entries with their own Wikipedia article, require sourcing for each and every info ?. Someone has tagged each section there. Isn't it weird as one can easily navigate the Wikipedia article of the subject to verify. Admantine123 ( talk) 18:06, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

As long as the name is linked to an article and the linked article establishes membership in the family, I don't think specific sourcing is required. RegentsPark ( comment) 18:13, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, that's what I wanted to confirm. Also, i think the names with no Wikipedia article shouldn't be there as per WP:WTAF.
Admantine123 ( talk) 18:25, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

Question about dummy edits

Hello there:

Is there a way to make a dummy edit for the purpose of revising an edit summary, but without actually changing anything in the text that would then require another revision. See my recent edit on Mughal Empire, for example. Fowler&fowler «Talk» 21:38, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi Fowler. See Help:Dummy edit. Perhaps just add a space where it doesn't matter? And don't forget to label the summary with Dummy Edit. RegentsPark ( comment) 22:25, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

Columbia University official title

Hi RegentsPark. Can you provide any sources that indicate the university is officially titled "Columbia University in the City of New York"? As noted in my revision summary, SEC filings indicate the university is technically named "Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York." Additionally, this also seems to conflict with the "Organization" section of the page, where it also includes "Trustees of" in it's official corporate name. I would still keep this in the intro as an AKA as the university commonly uses this name in certain logos, as well as on student and faculty IDs. Fkiwiki ( talk) 15:49, 12 September 2023 (UTC)

I could swear this was discussed before but can't find it. I guess "officially self styled as" would be more accurate. Go ahead and revert me if you like. RegentsPark ( comment) 19:07, 12 September 2023 (UTC)

Martyrdom in Sikhism

Does this list of Sikh martyrs seem problematic to you? We don't have similar lists for other religions or sects. Wrythemann ( talk) 21:58, 22 September 2023 (UTC)

Category:Sikh_martyrs too. Wrythemann ( talk) 22:02, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
The concept of martyrdom in Sikhism is probably fine since it is apparently an underlying tenet of that faith. Mentioning the names of significant "martyrs" (those revered as martyrs in Sikhism) in the text is also probably okay. The list of martyrs, somewhat like all the caste lists we see on Wikipedia, is problematic because it becomes a catchall for anyone and everyone. But, you can see where that is going on WT:IN. RegentsPark ( comment) 14:57, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
Oh yeah.. regarding the caste discussion on WT:IN, would you like to make a decision on how we can proceed? It seems like everyone's forgotten about it. Wrythemann ( talk) 20:23, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

Request for protecting the article on Nath (surname)

Hello RegentsPark, you have earlier protected the article on Debnath. Debnath and Nath (surname) are part of the same community; they are considered as OBC in West Bengal, but they consider themselves to be Brahmins though such claims are not supported by any historian/author/source! Would request you to protect the article on Nath (surname) in order to prevent persistent unsourced POV pushing. Thanks & Regards. Ekdalian ( talk) 06:46, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

You can also check WP:DR for your options for dispute resolution. so why exactly did you delete my topic from the TALK page that was created to TALK about the page where i pointed out wrong FACTS? the page was closed to editing

since when is it even allowed to just delete talk pages on the wiki? surely it wasn't 20 years ago 80.251.112.205 ( talk) 22:13, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

IP, there is no reason you should assume someone will be able to connect the jargon-filled message you wrote with what is in the article.

Tamil pages

I understand you are you a North Indian without any knowledge in Tamil history- wonder why you are deleting my contribution? MaduraiSelvam ( talk) 03:32, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

See WP:Copyright violations. Also, please don't make assumptions about the ethnic identities about other editors. Both because you may be wrong as well as because it is a violation of good faith. RegentsPark ( comment) 11:25, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

Another protection

Indefinite semi for Sikandar Shah Miri? All that I see from drive-by IPs and new accounts is vandalism (for obvious reasons). TrangaBellam ( talk) 17:04, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

@ TrangaBellam: Not much point. The accounts are extended confirmed. RegentsPark ( comment) 18:44, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
I did drop a warning on their talk page. RegentsPark ( comment) 18:49, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

Thank you! Fowler&fowler «Talk» 22:38, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

Was brought up before in the talk page but never addressed. Reverted for now, your call on the exact wording, thanks! Fkiwiki ( talk) 19:37, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
I've reverted to RP's version with a source. Fowler&fowler «Talk» 22:39, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

Page protection

Can you please apply extended confirmed protection on Kachhwaha, Kushwaha. A WP:SPA is adding factually incorrect content repeatedly. I have opened a discussion regarding them at WP:AN/I Admantine123 ( talk) 08:48, 17 September 2023 (UTC)

@ Admantine123: Looks like they got indef blocked. Let me know if there is further disruption. RegentsPark ( comment) 20:27, 17 September 2023 (UTC)
Yupp thanks Admantine123 ( talk) 03:17, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the block...

But might I suggest that you consider an indef block as being more appropriate for this editor? It seems clear that they are a sock of this blocked editor, who has recently had two other socks blocked for editing in the same disruptive manner (including personal attacks) on the same topic. Or should I submit a case to SPI? JoJo Anthrax ( talk) 16:21, 21 September 2023 (UTC)

Already indeffed by Courcelles. RegentsPark ( comment) 16:39, 21 September 2023 (UTC)

Allegations by MaduraiSelvam

Hello RegentsPark, you seem to have a regional view, political and caste agenda promoting your support on caste system and religious extremism. Please stop harassing people by trying to manipulate the wiki rules to establish your agenda. MaduraiSelvam ( talk) 14:21, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

Replied on Talk:Paravar. RegentsPark ( comment) 11:41, 26 September 2023 (UTC)
Interesting observation that doesn't seem to be rooted in reality. Could you share your thoughts on what you believe RP's agenda might be? Wrythemann ( talk) 20:21, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
