Sunday July 6: WikNYC Picnic

You are invited to join us the "picnic anyone can edit" in Central Park, as part of the Great American Wiknic celebrations being held across the USA. Remember it's a wiki-picnic, which means potluck. I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.

What else is going on in July? We have the American Chemical Society Edit-a-Thon on Saturday, July 12, dedicated to notable chemists, and our monthly WikiSalon on Wednesday, July 16.

Sorry for the last minute update, but our friends at the DC Historical Society have scheduled a Battle of Fort Stevens Edit-a-Thon to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War battle fought in the District. The event will last from noon to 2 PM on Wednesday, July 30. Hope you can make it!

Hi Dominic, I don't know if this pinged you or not, but I thought I should drop you a line on your talk page. There's a photo that Adam Cuerden might be able to restore for an article that's currently being reviewed for A-class (and will presumably go on to FAC) but he was curious if a larger version of the photo was available. I'm assuming that it's in NARA's holdings - is that something you could help us track down? (full disclosure, I don't know exactly what your role is and is not, so if this isn't a good use of your time, no problem - but to sweeten the deal, the editor who wrote the article is a WWII veteran who served aboard the ship). I think I'll start with the bow image, from the uncropped copy, uploading a similarly-cropped version as well, then move on to the much "dirtier" image that's the lead, since it'll take more time - lots of little hairs on it. Hi,

I was wondering if the National Archives held on file a "Department of the Navy" report into the sinking of the Lusitania?.

All that is needed at this stage is a simple confirmation of such a reports existence.

Longer term, the hope was if the relevant document is digitised and can be OCR processed,, that it could be trasncribed on Wikisouce.

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Hi Dominic - from a few years back.. is there any chance that my US military general officers portrait request may see some progress this year? I've sent in an email to the NARA request email with a few of the portraits I've previously received via mail (the B&W copies) along with citation numbers I have. If that goes well I may start sending a batch every month or something of the sort. I imagine that these photos will be found in the same series, so it hopefully that makes it a bit less tedious. Under some form of public records law , some of the Testimony to the Grand Jury in Ferguson was released to media such as here

Does NARA intend to retain a copy?

Would the relevant public records law in Missouri allow for Commons (ad ultimately Wikisource) to keep a copy of the Documents?

Hi there. This answer might not be what you were looking for, but NARA generally only preserves the records of the federal government. It's not clear to me that any of the records you are interested in would be federal records that would end up at NARA. The decision about retention of records is also made by agencies in consultation with NARA based on policy, but my understanding is that NARA does not exactly just decide to retain a record. You should also keep in mind that records take years or sometimes decades before they are transferred to NARA for preservation from their creating agencies. If you are very interested in any of these records that are not yet available, I would suggest you look into FOIA instead. Dominic· t 21:21, 12 December 2014 (UTC)

Hey Nemo, thanks for your kind message! I'm still quite active, but in different ways these days. I'm working on a grant that has allowed NARA to provide funding for steering meetings for the GLAM-Wiki US Consortium. We're also working on a second GLAM Boot Camp later this year. We're also working with Andrew Lih in establishing a prototype for a physical space for learning about Wikipedia. These sorts of off-wiki efforts are my main Wikimedia-related activities, and I don't get much time for editing in my free time these days. Also, about half my day job now is related to NARA's other open data/citizen archivist initiatives, like the new API for our catalog (which will enable us to restart our uploading eventually), and contributory functions (tagging, transcription) in our catalog. There is too much work for one person to do, though! We probably need another person on board just to do all the direct community engagement efforts like article drives and other content work I have been falling behind on. Hi Dominic, I thought you might be likely to know; at one point there was an intention to have a Wikimedia Diversity Conference in D.C., June 2015; did that every get off the ground? Or has it morphed into some other initiative? I've been watching for information, but perhaps I'm not looking in the right places. Hey @ Mary. It turns out that the conference has been moved to November. I know DC has other major activities they are working on before that, especially the WikiConference in October.
