That format is used by convention, it's nothing official. Note that the AfD process is a discussion, not a vote; the closing administrator will take into account the weight of policy-based arguments. The first bit is called the lede, in wiki-speak,. (Sorry about all the silly abbreviations).

A leading colon only indents the sentence that it is on. You have to start each new paragraph with a colon, just like I have here, for example;

Btilm, sorry I missed you on IRC just now; to answer - the reason that it was deleted was due to the lack of appropriate references. Now, maybe the XXLmag was a 'reliable source' - I'm not sure - but, with a proposed deletion, if nobody objects then the article can be deleted. Also, the mentions of this album in that source are really just 'passing mentions', which do not constitute 'significant coverage'. You'll need to find a couple of newspaper/magazine articles (not blogs) that are specifically about this album. Try this Google news search. Also, please read WP:NALBUM. • All articles require references to reliable sources, for two reasons; a) to pass notability guidelines, b) for verification. This is critical to any article - you must give references, to say where the information comes from. Otherwise, anyone could write anything. How can I 'prove' that this album exists? You need to cite a book, newspaper...something.

• The album may not meet the notability requirements in WP:NALBUM - in this specific case, it might be better to just add to the article on the band. As it says in that link, "Album articles with little more than a track listing may be more appropriately merged into the artist's main article or discography article".  Chzz   ►  02:02, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

I think, perhaps, you're asking how to reduce the spacing between the displayed subpages? That will not be effected by changing the cell-spacing, because the entire output from the special: is in a single cell. I'll remove this helpme for now, as I think that probably answers - also, it has to be said, Wikipedia is not myspace - I can't see that improving your talkpage box is really going to improve the project, if you see what I mean. {{helpme}}I am going to make a script that will help people perform a specific function only when a page is created. A have a few questions to ask about javascript in Wikipedia.

1. In wiki, if I want to create a perimeter (I think that is the name), I type {{{1}}}. When I transclude that page, I will put a pipe in the trancludesion, and the text after the pipe will replace "{{{1}}}". How do I do this in javascript?
2. In Wikipedia's javascript, is it possible to create a function that says something like "if this page exists, do this"? I know how to do the "do this" part, but how do I do the "if this page exists" part?

Do you have any experience in JavaScript? If not, I suggest you start with parses and regular templates. The parse function for if a page exists is simply {{#ifexist:}}. It is a parameter, not a perimeter. When you transclude a template, if the parameters are not named, they are indeed numbered 1,2,3. They are accessed by putting them inside triple curly brackets, as you say. The pipe is not directly related to the parameter, but instead, a pipe symbol separates the template name from its output. Consider this example;

I just wrote User:Btilm/param, which is just one line;

This template has been passed some parameters. The first is {{{1}}}, the second is {{{2}}} and the third is {{{3}}}.

If I now put {{User:Btilm/param|sausage|tea|banana}} here, it looks like this; User:Btilm/param.

Regarding javascript, that is somewhat beyond the scope of 'helpme' - answering your question requires knowledge of that language, and if you wish to learn javascript, I suggest looking on the internet for tutorials or getting books on the subject. {{{1|}}} is a call for a parameter. I don't think Wikipedia supports "and" expressions; you might want to take a look at Wikimarkup. Intelligent sium ^review 02:17, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Those refer to the parameters in the template call. {{{1}}} refers to the first parameter. As an example, I could create a template (let's call it Template:example) with the text: "This template says {{{1}}}." If I then transclude the template using {{example}} I would get the output:

This template says {{{1}}}.

If however, I add a parameter to the transclusion, such as {{example|sausage}}, the output would be:

This template says sausage.

Additional parameters can be used with {{{2}}}, {{{3}}} etc. That is the most basic use of parameters - it can get much more involved and complicated. For example, the {{{1|}}} you mention is used in conjunction with an IF function, which tests if a parameter exists before trying to use it. If you are referring to an on-wiki function, then there are two ways to achieve this sort of thing. The first method is to use a special URL format, such as;

[{{fullurl:User talk:Btilm|action=edit&preload=User:chzz/preloadtest&section=new}} Test link]

This is exactly the same as an external link to http://en.wikipedia.org/?title=User_talk:Btilm&action=edit&preload=User:chzz/preloadtest&section=new but it will appear without the 'external link' icon, like this: Test link

It 'pre-loads' the test in the page user:chzz/preloadtest, in which I just wrote "hello".

This is documented in mw:Manual:Creating pages with preloaded text

The second option would be to use a java script in the user monobook - the gadgets WP:TWINKLE and WP:FRIENDLY both add tabs that allow you to post information on user pages without intervention. Perhaps the best way to learn about that would be to study the code for one of those, e.g. User:Ioeth/friendlywelcome.js - that script allows you to 'welcome' the user page that you are currently viewing. You would have to manually add that code to your own javascript page, which - if you are using the standard monobook skin - is User:Btilm/monobook.js.

With regards to external tools, there are a myriad of ways to automate Wiki editing, mostly using semi-automated programs such as auto-wiki browser, and fully-automated bots written in various programming languages.  Chzz   ►  00:11, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Effectively, you can't do it, because Wikipedia pages do not update dynamically - they are created when you load the page, and the only way to get new info is to referesh them. Hence, the current number of articles, for example, is held in the 'magic word' NUMBEROFARTICLES and is, currently, 6,817,434. That number will not change until you refresh this page.

Perhaps the best way to monitor help requests is simply to connect to the help IRC channel - you can connect with this, but if you get a more fully-featured IRC client, it's quite easy to have it alert you when help - see WP:IRC.

Your watchlist is another easy way to monitor for page changes.

No special permissions are required to use custom javascript (AFAIAA), however, note that the tab would only appear for you (or others who use your script) - you wouldn't be able to add a tab to a page for all users. AJ Cham 02:59, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for helping out with the new articles. However, you may have noticed that I have disputed the speedy tag on Thomas Tomzak‎, as I don't believe it falls under CSD A1. The context of the article is clear - it specifically states that the subject of the article is the mayor of a specific town. If you believe the article is too short (keep in mind it is a stub, though), the subject is not notable, or you have some other, non-CSD reason for deleting the article, you might want to consider proposing the article for deletion instead. Hi Btilm,

I've removed your RFA from WP:RFA because it was malformed. In order to make a request, follow the directions at Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/nominate. You should mark the page you created for deletion as WP:CSD#G7, and file the new request at Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Btilm (note the capitalization of your name). If you try to write over your old page at [[ Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/btilm, I think some of the pre-written template magic will get messed up.

You might also reconsider the RFA; it appears to me that you might still be a little too new, and not have the experience that is typically needed at RFA. Take a look at a few recent successful and unsuccessful RFA's to get a feel for whether you agree or not. RFA can be a little brutal sometimes, and you don't want to go through it if the chances of passing are really small.
