Question about the term "herding"

Didn't want to post to the closed DYK, so I'll drop it here. In this DYK you noted that she didn't personally herd cattle. This didn't raise a flag with me, because I've always used the term "herd" to have two meanings, the verb that describes what a shepherd does, ie "herding", but also as "someone who owns a herd of cattle", like "I herd cattle for a living". Looking at the article on herding I see only the former version. Am I alone in using this second version? Google is of no help. Maury Markowitz ( talk) 17:46, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

For what it's worth, per Commons:Copyright_rules_by_subject_matter#Clothing, fashion is not copyrightable in the US. The photos were taken in Canada, where fashion is also not copyrightable (see for example this). Finally, the clothing is by a British designer, and clothing is also generally not copyrightable in the UK ( these two articles have some information on that). I was too slow, sorry, - while I responded to a ping you acted already. I invite you to read what Storye book explained about the wording of that critic quoted in the only hook N. finds acceptable, and that I find unacceptably tasteless, especially about a person who just died. You'll have to scroll, or look for "British humour often delights in other types of puerile vulgarity concealed among ultra-sophisticated material." - Imagine you are her daughter, perhaps. -- Gerda Arendt ( talk) 14:46, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

ALT0a. -- Gerda Arendt ( talk) 20:39, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
@ Gerda Arendt: that hook was rejected. But I think we have this conversation running in too many places so we should take it to the relevant talk page WP:DYK. Bruxton ( talk) 22:58, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
The correct place to discuss would have been the nomination, but that was closed. I wonder why the rejection of ALT0a was accepted, but my rejection of ALT1 was not. -- Gerda Arendt ( talk) 23:20, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
@ Gerda Arendt: I think because it was not your nomination and Gerda you have to know how tiring it is for DYK editors to have controversy on so many opera nominations. To control the nominations going forward it may be best if you make your own nominations. All of us thought that ALT1 was interesting. Bruxton ( talk) 23:32, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
Ready to learn: how is ALT1 interesting and for whom? To me, it looks just like a (slightly indecent) pun, and says nothing specific related to the achievements of a great woman? -- Gerda Arendt ( talk) 23:43, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
@ Gerda Arendt: I see nothing indecent and I do not see this as a pun - and this is exhausting. "Resonant bottom extension" is clearly a compliment on her vocal chops and it is linked to vocal range. I fear you are not going to let this go. Bruxton ( talk) 00:05, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
I fear that I hear a double meaning in "bottom extension" (supported by Storye book's explanation) that you seem not to notice. -- Gerda Arendt ( talk) 00:10, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
WP:FORUMSHOP may be worth reading in this case as well. Narutolovehinata5 ( talk · contributions) 23:02, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

Hey there! Just wondering: in the nomination I kinda rejected ALT1 in favor of ALT0, though I noticed ALT1 was promoted instead. Narutolovehinata5 ( talk · contributions) 00:55, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

@ Narutolovehinata5: I was prudish about the circumcision angle and over 45 years it did not seem all that impressive. 577 circumcisions a year. If you really want that one I can change it. Bruxton ( talk) 01:39, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
I was thinking more of the thousands number but I'll leave the decision to you. I'm fine with ALT1 as I thought it was a nice pun, I just thought ALT0 was the more eyecatchy hook personally. Narutolovehinata5 ( talk · contributions) 01:46, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
@ Narutolovehinata5: I learned what a [[ Mohel]] is. Bruxton ( talk) 02:00, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
577 circumcisions per year seems impressive to me. For comparison, David only needed 100 foreskins to marry a princess; this mohel is averaging five times that per year--that's a lot, even when taking into account historical foreskin inflation. Levivich ( talk) 01:00, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
@ Levivich: These pretzels are making me thirsty! Bruxton ( talk) 01:15, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
I do think it's a cute hook and it also made me learn what a Mohel is, but I don't know. The hook is already promoted and I'm not objecting to the choice in hook given that it was already a punchy hook on it's own, I was just giving my thoughts as to why I thought ALT0 was better. Narutolovehinata5 ( talk · contributions) 08:34, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Actually, I'm not Jewish. (The name is, but it's all on my father's side.) Despite that, I do know what a mohel is, so I think ALT1 is good enough for a general audience. — David Eppstein ( talk) 17:38, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Marc Tay

Hi Bruxton, thanks for the very speedy promotion of the hook. The online sources may be somewhat skimpy about his involvement in the war, but one 1993 article in the Straits Times (cited in the article) does intimate that Tay performed surgery at the hospital. (It mentions that Tay split 12-hr shifts "with the only other eye surgeon" in the hospital, at least.) So I think it would be accurate to say that he served in the war as an eye surgeon. @ Ravenpuff: when you move a page while it is being reviewed at GA the nomination is immediately failed. This happened once before when I was reviewing the Leaders of the World sign for GA. Also the other hoard articles have the word hoard capitalized as in Redfield Hoard, Baltimore Gold Hoard - notice the titles in this template {{Template:Silver hoards }}. Maybe @ Mike Christie: can help un-fail this nomination? Thanks. Bruxton ( talk) 15:49, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

  • If ALT1 isn't used it will be a crime against humanity (but please, not in the picture slot). Paging David Eppstein since, ya know, he's a nice Jewish boy. E Eng 17:31, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
Actually, I'm not Jewish. (The name is, but it's all on my father's side.) Despite that, I do know what a mohel is, so I think ALT1 is good enough for a general audience. — David Eppstein ( talk) 17:38, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
@ David Eppstein and EEng: Well I heard that the main page is not censored, however the picture slot may be a bridge to far! lol Bruxton ( talk) 18:23, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

History will recall that it was at this point that things truly went from bad to worse: [1] [2] [3]. Creepiest sentence (and this was a very hard choice to make): "When my wife Diane asked me to prepare her placenta to eat because she was experiencing a difficult pregnancy, I got excited." Marc Tay

Hello!

Out of the blue but I encountered some of your work in the wild shortly after chatting with you about the same DYK as mentioned above: I just wanted to say that I'm astounded at the volume of work you've done for Wikipedia and to specifically thank you for making the coin slab article. I simply can not believe that did not exist until last month and I'm glad I finally have something to direct friends to when they come up (which is surprisingly common for me!). Thank you for being a kind and highly productive editor! ~ Pbritti ( talk) 05:46, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

@ Pbritti: Thank you so much for the kind words! I hope to see you around! Bruxton ( talk) 14:53, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
Same to you! Gotta say, all you DYK lot are solid editors. Can't wait what you publish next! ~ Pbritti ( talk) 05:19, 12 August 2023 (UTC)

Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Binion Hoard you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. The SOHA hooks

I would suggest putting the two SOHA hooks for September 1 in the following prep, since they’re both US-focused, and the current prep placement means many Americans will see “today” as August 31. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 ( talk) 15:33, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Binion hoard

The article Binion hoard you nominated as a good article has failed ; see Talk:Binion hoard for reasons why the nomination failed. If or when these points have been taken care of, you may apply for a new nomination of the article. Message delivered by ChristieBot, on behalf of Vaticidalprophet -- Vaticidalprophet ( talk) 15:41, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

@ Bruxton: Apologies, I didn't look closely enough! I've moved the page back and amended the capitalization in the lead. —  RAVENPVFF · talk · 15:53, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
@ Ravenpuff: No problem, I am sure it will get sorted. I appreciate all you do to make this project great. Bruxton ( talk) 15:54, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

Lauk Shein

Hi Bruxton, re: your comment about the DYK nomination for Lauk Shein. One of the sources for the hook is available online: https://www.burmalibrary.org/sites/burmalibrary.org/files/obl/docs4/4.2Fernquest.pdf. See page 8. In general, the number of sources available online and in English on Burmese history is small. Thankfully, this topic happens to have an online source. Thanks.
