Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. On Yael Naim

  • you did not remove the category Israeli people of French descent
  • you did also not remove the category Israeli people of Tunisian-Jewish descent
  • but you did remove the category Israeli people of Tunisian descent .

Apparently you applied similar, silly changes on a legion of WP articles. Whatever rules you make up in your personal value system, you are not authorised to employ your personal value system on WP articles. This is vandalism. Stop doing that immediately! -- johayek ( talk) 01:58, 27 March 2015 (UTC) reply

Please do not insult me or make accusations, calling me an obsessed and racist vandal. I'd appreciate it if you assumed good faith. Why should Yael Naim be classified under both the "Israeli people of Tunisian descent" and "Israeli people of Tunisian-Jewish descent" categories, when the Tunisian-Jewish descent category is sufficent? I didn't remove the French descent category because I didn't notice it. Have a nice night. Bohemian Baltimore ( talk) 02:02, 27 March 2015 (UTC) reply

Why don't you simply leave all the categories untouched? Somebody seemed to find them useful? Even if there was some redundancy, why do you bother? The only possible explanation for your doing is some sort of racism. Maybe you want to explain your reasons and seek agreement before you start acting like during the last hours. -- johayek ( talk) 02:48, 27 March 2015 (UTC) reply

Ethnoreligiosity in south east asia

Do you have a good reference for that - or what or how are you determining identifications with the specific groups.

Just to be 'labelled' in Indonesia does not actually mean that the identification comes from the people, it can be a left over from the new order era when you 'had to have religion' or you would be breaking the law.

In the current political climate in south east asia - to identify groups as ethnoreligious is potentially a revertable exercise which you need top be prepared for.

Of descent categories

Bohemian Baltimore, please be very careful with the mass assigning or removing of "of descent" categories. They are very contentious and it is very easy to make a lot of category changes over a short period of time. It would help if you discussed your planned changes on the talk page of WP:CFD or on the appropriate WikiProject talk page because it will be difficult to undo the work you are doing if it is not in keeping with the current category tree on descent. however, very unimpressed by the conservatism trap set of categories, that is not friendly to fellow editors, but a bit like a minefield of catch 22 bomb disposal loops. Indonesia is not in oceania in most of the encyclopedia (some odd places it has crept in but in most cases has been cleaned up), and the reducing category pages to un-negotiable instructions that do not allow the average editor to negotiate is not kosher to say the least. For the conservative portal link to trump any tinkering is simply not good faith editing. the same thing was applied to the festival category tree categories, it is clearly something that is bigger than any one subject area, forget it. no need to reply or think about JarrahTree 05:27, 14 February 2016 (UTC) reply

Appalachian migrants in Collinwood

The Appalachian population in Collinwood may have diminished, but the article states that they were a historically significant presence along with Slovenes and Italians but that the neighborhood is now majority African-American. Wouldn't it be fair to include culture/history categories for African-Americans, Italian-Americans, and Slovene-Americans, as well as Appalachian migrants? Bohemian Baltimore ( talk) 08:01, 19 April 2016 (UTC) reply

Appalachian Culture in Collinowood was never really a thing like the Italians, Slovenes and Black population that is and was there. Unlike the ethnic groups you mention that are featured in the categories, the minority white presence of people from the South and Appalachian regions were assimilated into an urban environment and within a generation, those who remained weren't Appalachian anymore -- they were urban and from Cleveland. The Black, Italian and Slovene populations in Collinwood remained entrenched in their cultural heritage and still do as African-Americans Italian-Americans and Slovene-Americans. They built social clubs and churches and defined the neighborhood culturally. People moving to the city from the South during the war for employment (which happened all over states with heavy manufacturing during the War, and is exactly why own father's family moved up to Warren and Youngstown from West Virginia) is one thing, but to say they left an Appalachian cultural mark on the neighborhood would be a huge reach. Aside from the bars that they frequented (which are long gone and/or have changed patron demographics), there wasn't a cultural shift in the neighborhood. A lot of them migrated elsewhere (e.g. the suburbs) after the war when the city began to go into decline but the ones who reamined didn't give the neighborhood anything resembling an Appalachian cultural identity. And I not only grew up close to Collinwood and spent enough time around it to know what and who the culture is like there, I also lived in Appalachia while I was in the army. Towns like Moundsville, Steubenville, Martin's Ferry, Boone, Gate City and Big Stone Gap are all areas rich in Appalachian culture. A couple blocks in a neighborhood in a factory town that housed some people who moved to Cleveland from other parts of the country 50-60 years ago doesn't warrant inclusion in the category you're making the case for. Hi Bohemian Baltimore, I have noticed your inclusions within this category and I must ask in what way would the many radio stations pertaining to Haiti constitute as being strictly "Afro-Caribbean," especially when each article does not specifically states that it is? I've also noticed that "Category:Papiamento" is also included in the "Afro-Caribbean culture" category, which although has African elements, is not strictly of African origin, when the language itself may be 90-95% of Portuguese origin and is not exclusively spoken by a sole demographic regardless of how high that ratio would be. The proper categorization would be "Caribbean culture in the United States" and "Caribbean culture" respectively unless stated otherwise in said articles. As it stands, this is a strong case of WP:POV and identifying (all?) Caribbean culture with Africanism which is also again one's point of view.

Within the Category:Afro-Caribbean culture in the United States, you have also included "Louisiana Voodoo." While, slaves were taken from Saint-Domingue (Haiti) to New Orleans, there is no evidence to actually (currently) support and imply that it wasn't already practiced before this time, for the same reasons why we cannot call Louisiana Creole French, an Afro-Caribbean dialect. So essentially, we are calling every newspaper in Haiti, a black newspaper (or African), and Creole languages the same. This is the same stereotype dealt with in the New Orleans area and in many countries around the world, labeling creole languages as such when people of all races would be able to converse in the languages as well. To add, the exact origins of these languages are unclear and are merely theories. You have been a grade A contributor and administrator, who I have thanked on many occasions since the time I have started editing, and I am fully confident that you will realize what I am trying to convey here and to make good on it. Thank you kindly. Savvyjack23 ( talk) 20:02, 24 April 2016 (UTC) reply

Hi, Savvyjack23! Thanks for taking the time to comment. I very much appreciate your input. I had placed 'Papiamento' under both 'Afro-Caribbean' and 'Portuguese-Caribbean' categories because I saw that Papiamento had both Portuguese and West African influences. I placed Haitian Creole language related articles under 'Afro-Caribbean' categories as well, given the West African influence on Haitian Creole. Likewise with Louisiana Voodoo, I only meant to acknowledge Afro-Caribbean influence on the religion, not imply that the religion was solely Afro-Caribbean. If these categories are inappropriate, I'm perfectly fine with them being removed. I'm well aware that Papiamento and Haitian Creole are not solely spoken by black people in the Caribbean and I most definitely do not conflate all Caribbean culture with African diaspora culture (if I did, I wouldn't have created a sub-category for 'Afro-Caribbean' culture). It has always been my intent to reflect the cultural diversity of the Caribbean (Afro-Caribbean, Indo-Caribbean, white Caribbean, etc.) and I've edited a number of articles pertaining to both black and non-black populations in the Caribbean, so I'm disappointed in myself if my recent edits have been insufficient in that respect. Oy! My intent was to emphasis black culture in the Caribbean, not conflate the two, so my apologies for doing so improperly. My interest in Appalachian culture has run into the same issue before; whereas Caribbean people are often stereotyped as being of African descent, being Appalachian is often stereotyped as being a rural white Christian. It's been my goal to emphasize urban, African, and Jewish populations in the region to emphasize the region's cultural diversity, so I very much sympathize with your concerns here about not wanting to stereotype the Caribbean as being solely African. Thank you again for your very helpful constructive criticism, I will try to be more careful with these categories in future. Have a nice night/day. Beth Elliot Neutrality Tag?

Hi, I noticed you placed a POV tag on the page for Beth Elliot I'm wondering why, and if you could please explain that on the talk page for the article proper, because right now it's hard to figure out what you think is wrong with the article.

Thanks. Cam94509 ( talk) 22:09, 14 November 2018 (UTC) reply

Sure, give me some time and I'll add a note to the talk page. I added the POV tag because the article is very clearly written by someone with a favorable view of and sympathy for Beth Elliott. It's not a neutral tone to take when writing about a controversial figure who has been accused of engaging in allegedly predatory sexual behavior. The sentence with "Not only was Elliott emotionally and socially scarred, but the words defaming her circulated among grassroots lesbian networks" strikes me as particularly biased. This sentence could be interpreted as implying that people like Bev Jo Von Dohre slandered or libeled Beth Elliot, and Wikipedia should not be making such claims.

A tag has been placed on Category:Russian upper class requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. — swpb T 15:25, 25 April 2017 (UTC) reply

Any persons you would like to add to African Americans in Maryland?

I am only learning the people and events of Maryland's Black history as I go along. I started working on Lewis Charlton (slave) page and moving on from there, but being neither Black nor from Maryland; I could use all the help I could get. Thanks C. W.

Articles should not be moved that way. Always used the "Move" option at the top of an article or got to WP:Requested moves if you need admin help to move an article. I've taken the AfterEllen.com matter to WP:Requested moves for a WP:Histmerge. Flyer22 Reborn ( talk) 01:31, 30 April 2019 (UTC) reply
