Hi, great work on SS Canastota. I notice that you appear to be doing something the "hard way" when it comes to citations. For example, you have added a citation to
The Mercury (Hobart), Wednesday 18 August 1915, Page 4
in relation to the hydro-electric power station. Now I am guessing you are probably finding these newspaper articles on Trove. If so, there is a much easier way to cite that newspaper article. So when you are looking at a Trove newspaper article which is
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/10425586
for the citation in question, look over on the left-hand side and there is a tool bar. By default it will show you the "A" view, but if you click on the "i" in a circle above, and then left-hand window should show a heading called "Details". Scroll down to the bottom of that list and you will find the pre-formatted Wikipedia citation
{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article10425586 |title=THE HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME. |newspaper=[[The Mercury]] |volume=CIII, |issue=14,178 |location=Tasmania, Australia |date=18 August 1915 |accessdate=13 February 2018 |page=4 |via=National Library of Australia}}
Just copy that (don't worry if you can't understand it) and use it instead of typing in "The Mercury (Hobart), Wednesday 18 August 1915, Page 4" and this is what you will get
On her first voyage to Australia as the 'Canastota' in 1915, she carried transformers and components for power lines associated with the Waddamana Hydro-Electric Power Station in Tasmania. [1]
References
{{
cite news}}
: CS1 maint: extra punctuation (
link)
This is a much easier-for-you citation to create and it is a much more useful citation for the reader, who can now click on the link and be taken straight to the newspaper article to read it. (It's win-win!) Try it. If you have any problems, please don't hesitate to ask.
Note these pre-formatted citations are available for all Trove newspaper articles, but also for everything else in Trove such as books, journals, pictures, maps, etc -- only for these other types of things, you look for the button "Cite this" instead of "i" in a circle. Hi Dave, Thanks for your example. It clearly shows that there is a difference in the way the references that I make are being made, and your way. As well as the date difference, there your way is also embedding more information. So, to help expose what I am doing wrong, I will walk through exactly what I am doing, and perhaps that will expose the issue. 1. I find the article I want to cite in Trove. 2. I copy the URL from the address bar of the browser. (For your example above this is https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/112450756 ) 3. I then hit the Cite icon at the top of hte page, and the cite box pops up. 4. With the cite box in 'Auto", I then paste the above URL into the one blank space that appears, and press the Generate button. 5. I then press Insert to insert to on-line citation. BTW, I may or may not be logged into Trove as a user when I do the above. Let me know what you think. TrimmerinWiki ( talk) 06:22, 22 July 2019 (UTC)
@ Dave Rave:Dave, Thanks for that. I have unfortunately made many hundreds of citations, without using the Wikipedia citation from that info drp-down on Trove (since it seemed to work OK). I will start using the specialised wikipedia citation information from now on ... never too late to be correct.
When I talk about cite box in Auto, I am getting there by clicking on the "Cite on the top bar of the Wikipedia article, when it is in "Edit". The pop-up box that comes up is called 'Add a citation' and it has three tabs 'Automatic' Manual' and 'Re-use'. My 3 & 4 above are talking bout what happens with the 'Automatic' tab. I was just cutting and pasting the Trove URL into that box, because it offers URL as one of the optional entries (others are ISBN, etc. .... or as I see now 'citation'). Hope that this explains it. I assume that I should have been pasting the Trove Wikipedia citation into this box. -- TrimmerinWiki ( talk) 07:13, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
@ Dave Rave:Dave, I am having trouble understanding your concern. The 'pop-up box' is just what appears, when you (or I) click on the 'Cite' part of the bar across any Wikipedia page when the page is in edit (not edit source, edit). All I have been doing incorrectly in previous citations from Trove that I was using the url of the Trove page, not the Wikipedia citation provide on the Trove page. I am not using an 'edit add on plugin". I have changed to using the Wikipedia citation from now. Hope that this answers your concern. TrimmerinWiki ( talk) 10:46, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
@ Dave Rave:Dave, I am overwhelmingly using visual editor but, very occasionally, I do use the source editor when it is easier to do what I need to achieve. TrimmerinWiki ( talk) 06:11, 19 March 2021 (UTC)

SmokeyJoe ( talk) 11:20, 17 October 2019 (UTC)It seems that the reviewers of your articles know absolutley nothing about local context of your articles, and yet you have got some substantial good quality contributions there. By the time you go from the Tasmanian item to the Western Australian one - your lead paragraphs are improving. One big problem for writing about places you clearly have been nowhere near is the paucity of links. The Tasmanian article could deserve a few more if you looked back at it. The hidden story of the Western Australian one - is the total lack of anything about the railway system that supported the transport. You must be commended on your substantial effort in creating articles in areas that many current editors seem very short on - subjects and locations otherwise neglected. Well done for that. JarrahTree 23:41, 24 October 2019 (UTC)
@ JarrahTree: Thanks for the feedback and complements. I only tackle subjects that are either not well known now, or are slipping from public consciousness. I also like to form linkages between existing topics and the ones I am writing about. That's probably why my efforts occur in 'spurts', as I develop some new subject interest, or I get tired of 'Wikipeding' and do something else for a while. SS Canastota was my first article. A relative of mine was one of those lost on that ship and I remember being told about it by my grandmother, when I was quite young. So, eventually, with some time on my hands I researched it and, at the end, had lots of material; then I thought, "What do I do with all this?". The answer was to get involved in Wikipedia. Regarding the Draft / Review process, I do appreciate the breathing space it gives for final tidy-ups and additions, and I suppose that I approve of the concept that the process is moderated in some way. There would be nothing worse, for example than to put up a superfluous article - if there is already something better there already - and I appreciate the help with categories, etc. that some of the reviewing editors provide. I do try to comply with what Wikipedia is about, and I am still learning! TrimmerinWiki ( talk) 03:21, 29 October 2019 (UTC)
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Fitzroy Iron Works, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Fitzroy ( check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

@ DPL bot: Yes, I agree that I should not have made that link. I did not realise that it was a disambiguation page as the list under the heading "As a surname" lists the people in the family that I was referring to in the Fitzroy Iron Works article. I have fixed the issue by linking to an article on one of the members of the family. TrimmerinWiki ( talk) 10:21, 9 November 2019 (UTC)

@ JarrahTree: Thank you for your complements. Good to hear that my efforts are worthwhile. I am doing this for personal satisfaction and happy if some others do not recognise anything special in my articles. Not sure what you meant by bogolong being 'musical' as it is about C19th industry. BTW, one thing you might be able to advise me on; I have had a draft on the Tamar Hematite Iron Company in the system for over 6-weeks (it actually pre-dates the Wundowie and Infracombe articles), but it is still sitting there as a draft. Any reason that you can see for that? TrimmerinWiki ( talk) 22:35, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
Probably not explained very well - when you create articles and put them in main space, there are some editors who allocated projects tags to the talk page - somehow industrial must have looked good - pity it's nothing to do with industry - but actually is a designated music item: /info/en/?search=Wikipedia:WikiProject_Industrial - dubious, dubious... As for any draft - you are welcome to move to main space - you dont need to sit around for the process, you are an accomplished editor by now, in most cases editors who check your work are probably totally ignorant of your subject and geographical context - go for it! just a note about the context of project tags on the talk page - always worth checking similar articles for clues to help place the article with the projects most relevant - well done another article well above 'average' standard for Australian new articles, keep up the good work - it is inspiring that you make the effort for the Australian project... JarrahTree 06:50, 11 January 2020 (UTC)
@ KylieTastic: Thank you for reviewing this article so quickly. It has been my (bad?) habit to submit a draft and still keep adding to it, while I wait for the usual inevitable delay in reviewing it to 'time out'. I did so this time and so left of much of the sourcing of the article, but your review was so fast! I have rectified that issue now. @ BigrTex:Thanks for your comment. I put all I know about the Blackwattle Bay Coal Bunker into the existing article; there is not much to find unfortunately. I suppose that I could add something to the existing Blackwattle Bay article, but in relation to a topic the photo does fit where it is now, illustrating the (former) coal port facilities of Sydney Harbour. Regarding the sourcing of this photograph, I went to a lot of trouble to get it. I even had permission from the owner of the Reproduction Rights (Sydney City Council) to put it into Wikipedia, with their instructions on how to load it to Wikipedia. But, I thought I would do the right thing and use the non-free licence tag, because there was some doubt about the context in which the photograph was originally taken and the photographer was a known person. I was being conservative. Now I know the trouble unleashed by using the non-free tag, I won't ever go down that path again. However, I must point out that the criterion that is suggested as the reason for a deletion is a subjective one. Why not just leave it to the reader to see if the photograph assists their understanding of the topic? It seems to meet the other non-free criteria, and nobody so far has said that it does not. There are no 'free' images - hardly any images at all in fact - of this facility, as a going concern, that I have found; if there was one I would have used it. TrimmerinWiki ( talk) 23:18, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

@ BigrTex: Well it looks like the file has now been deleted. So, that is that. I have learnt that attempting to use the 'non-free' licence is so fraught with difficulty that I personally will never go down that path again. As luck would have it I found a free image of a nearby wharf and bunker (Howard Smith) at Blackwattle Bay, albeit not the same wharf and bunker that was shown in the file in question (Jones Brothers). So, the article ends up with a picture of Blackwattle Bay after all.-- TrimmerinWiki ( talk) 21:17, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

Theroadislong ( talk) 11:17, 6 December 2020 (UTC)Hello, TrimmerinWiki. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, " Joey Chua".
In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Hi TrimmerinWiki! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor at
Moruya, New South Wales that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia – it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as
typo corrections or reverting obvious
vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see
Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you.

What I did was to remove a link to 'John McKenzie (colonial settler') from the page John Mckenzie (disambiguation) and add a link to 'John Mackenzie (colonial settler)'from 'John Mackenzie (disambiguation)'. Is that the cause of your issue? I did this after you moved the page, because I thought that the disambiguation should follow the new article title. Adding a property name and street number does not make much sense as the station is of course on railway land and not the nearest private property. Hope this makes it clearer where the old station was/is. It is basically where Old Tuggeranong Road (no longer open as a public road) crosses the old railway line. I like the idea of uncovering and learning something new, and doing something with that new information. Of course, after a while, it can become a bit of a hard slog, in which case, there is always plenty waiting to be be done back in real life. TrimmerinWiki ( talk) 09:24, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
@ JarrahTree: Well, it has happened again, see section below. Some person that has created an article, amongst others. on the Bombay Football Club has rejected my draft on Torbane (see section below). At least I would hope that if rejection comes, it be rejected by somebody from the relevant Wikipedia Project. And, the reasons given for rejection are not valid at all, but surprisingly similar to an earlier rejection of someone else's article last November. I know that you have warned me, but this draft has been on the boil for quite a long time, and so it started well before I had learned my lesson, about drafts and random reviews. I also had a change that I made to Commonwealth Oil Corporation (removing the redirect) reverted, with the history on the article's talk page. (I have not given up on that one). Sure is frustrating.
{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article10425586 |title=THE HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME. |newspaper=[[The Mercury]] |volume=CIII, |issue=14,178 |location=Tasmania, Australia |date=18 August 1915 |accessdate=13 February 2018 |page=4 |via=National Library of Australia}}
References
{{
cite news}}

Theroadislong ( talk) 11:17, 6 December 2020 (UTC)Hello, TrimmerinWiki. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, " Joey Chua".
In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia
mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply and remove the {{db-afc}}

, or {{db-g13}}
code.
If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.
Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! Eternal Shadow Talk 23:05, 11 December 2020 (UTC)

Grahame ( talk) 01:14, 24 February 2022 (UTC)your editing and contributions to australian content are in fact the most thorough and comprehensive set of edits by any editor in the last ten years according to me - so why you subject yourself to uninformed and limited perception processes? feel free to vent on or off wiki anytime - thats part of being in this damned colander/seive
as for a vast number of editors, they have no idea what they are looking at, its always good to have one that might have a clue... JarrahTree 06:29, 24 February 2022 (UTC) @ JarrahTree: Thank you for the encouragement. I enjoy editing as a bit of an escape from Real life; some of this stuff can become really involved.
