It's a collaboration!
A collaboration using advanced wiki-tools!
If everything goes according to plan, it will begin on July 15th.
The event is being co-sponsored by Wikiproject Lists of basic topics and WikiProject Geography, and participants will be "traveling" all around "the World" visiting each country online (here on Wikipedia and perhaps beyond) as they apply advanced wiki-tools to improve pieces of the profiles of each and every country on Earth!. Each pass through these pages is a "trip around the World..."
The set of pages we are working on is currently located at Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists of basic topics.
Each page presents essential information on each country in a topic outline format, for ease of overviewing and navigating. Most of the topics presented are linkified, which turns these pages into a hypertextual map to material about each country on Wikipedia. When completed, they shall all become part of Wikipedia's contents system.
The pages share a standard format, with the information on each country presented in the same general order. So rather than getting stuck on a single country trying to complete it, each participant works on all 200+ political entities, completing a single data item or detail across all of the pages!
For this they use advanced tools like WP:AWB, Linky, etc. It goes fast, and since others are doing this at the same time, it makes "the World" feel like a beehive, and the participants are its bees. :) The energy is contagious.
And since you are moving from country to country, the tasks make it feel like you are traveling around the world, and you get to learn a little about every country as you do so. This approach also allows for greater efficiency, because by the time you've done 30 or so of a particular item, you've figured out how to finish it faster and more effectively (such as where to find the data or how to make adjustments), and this specialization speeds up development - but more importantly it reduces errors.
The tasks are varied, which adds even more variety to the project. Some tasks are look-ups-and-fill-ins, some are copy and paste, some are image hunts, some are maintenance adjustments, some are link fixing, some are blue-linking (creating an underlying redirect so a link turns blue), some are fact checking, etc.
For an example of what a nearly complete page looks like, see these:
There are only about 200 more pages to go!
During the collaboration, co-coordinators will be standing by, to lend a helping hand to participants, provide instruction and tips on how to use the tools, and help them find what they are looking for. Co-coordinators will also be using advanced tools to inspect the work of participants, and touch it up as needed, or if a task was done wrong throughout, point this out to the participant so he or she can make the necessary corrections.
Co-coordinators are working on the set of pages right now, to familiarize themselves with "the World" so they can help more effectively by the time the main event starts. But there's still lots of preparation left to be done, and we are looking for editors experienced in advanced wikitools who would like to become co-coordinators.

Hey there!
I'm sending you this because I noticed you were active in the former league of copy-editors. I joined the LOCE something like a few days before it became historical, and have been making a lonely effort to reduce the copy-edit backlog, so I've been curious - why did the LOCE close, are there any efforts going on out there to reduce the copy-edit backlog, and do you think there's a point in establishing (and would you join) a wikiproject purely to maintain the category of articles needing copy edits?
I've been having a hard time getting people on related projects ( WP:PR, WP:GAN, etc) to help with the backlog, so I'm trying to gather suggestions or help regarding starting a project simply to maintain the category of articles needing copy edit.

I see you were listed as a participant in the League of Copy-Editors so it seems likely you can ... The thing is the Military history wikiproject urgently needs prose pros to help with our best articles. Milhist covers a broad range of interesting and varied subjects from film to biography, battles to weaponry, and Roman emperors to twentieth-century dictators. In Milhist, A-Class has become the last port of call before FAC and we are looking for people to help identify prose and MoS issues at A-Class A-Class Reviews and help fix them prior to featured article candidacy. We also have a copy-editing section in our Logistics Dept and that can always use experienced copy-editors. For most of our articles, you don't need to be a specialist in the subject matter, just good with words.

I know you recently agreed to copy-edit the aforementioned article, and User:Guyinblack25 recently made an attempt to copy-edit. Another run-through by an uninvolved editor (probably will be quicker since a big chunk of the problems were likely addressed) will likely be all that's needed before nominating it at WP:FLC. There's certainly no rush, but I'm just pointing this out. Thanks, Sephiroth BCR ( Converse) 07:15, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
Looking through, I see you are doing a lot of admin-related work. This is good for RFA when you do apply. I suggest not talking about it, because Adminship should not be a goal. Otherwise, you are doing very good AFD work, showing knowledge of consensus and policy doing non-admin closures. You are also doing great vandalism patrol, seeing a lot of AIV reports on your contribs list. You are also creating many articles, which is always a plus. Hope this helped. Hmm...they sorta follow the ninja mold you're probably familiar with, but in the Naruto universe, a ninja is basically anyone that can perform jutsu (magic/spells/techniques/etc.). Training to become a ninja largely revolves around learning jutsu more or less. Some of the items from contemporary ninja are present: kunai, lots and lots of smoke clouds, etc. I think the lead addresses this by pointing out ninja use jutsu. Do you think further clarification is necessary? Sephiroth BCR ( Converse) 07:32, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

Hey. Just letting you know that for when you do the infobox, I find Template:Infobox MLB retired to be a lot easier to use than Infobox MLB player if the player is retired. That's just my opinion though, in either case keep up the good work. Wizardman 03:44, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
Well I don't think it's ever been done before, but sure, that'll be great. It would be good having someone to informally point out when the candidate is unsuitable (edit warring, unclean block log in last three months, bad reversions, NO reversions etc). I suggest only pointing out concerns; if the candidate is suitable, leave it blank. Most of the time there is no problem, but sometimes admins don't spot everything. :) Thanks, PeterSymonds (talk) 06:43, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

I believe you may have erred in your early non-admin closure of the AFD for Wasp Factory Recordings. The debate had not run it's course, less than 4 days. The debate and the article did not show that the subject was highly notable. Two of the keep comments did not give any reasons. citation needed Two others partially relied on usenet posts, not reliable sources. The award mentioned does not give any indication about it's notability, and thus relevance. The article still lacks reliable sources. Duffbeerforme ( talk) 11:26, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

As you may know, the StatusBot responsible for maintaining the status of the Highly Active Users was taken offline. We now have a replacement in the Qui status system. This semi-automatic system will allow you to easily update your status page found at Special:Mypage/Status which the HAU page code is now designed to read from. If you are already using Qui (or a compatible) system - great! - no action is needed (other than remembering to update your status as necessary). If not, consider installing Qui. You can also manually update this status by changing the page text to online, offline, or busy. While it is not mandatory, the nature of HAU is that people are often seeking a quick answer from someone who is online and keeping our statuses up-to-date will assist with this. Note if you were previously using your /Status page as something other than a one-word status indicator, your HAU entry may have been set to "status=n" to correct display issues. Please clear this parameter if you change things to be "HAU compatible". Further questions can be raised at WT:HAU. This message was delivered by xenobot 22:41, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

For most of our articles, you don't need to be a specialist in the subject matter, just good with words.
If you think you can help, please do! Thanks for your time, -- ROGER DAVIES talk 04:16, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
I've already got Keeper on it, but I guess a little extra help won't hurt... Would you mind copyediting 2002 Bou'in–Zahra earthquake, as per the FAC? BTW, are you still contributing in WP:QUAKE? --I'm an Editor of the wiki citation needed 04:39, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
Well, I'm here there as requested; where are you? :P Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 10:40, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

I have another DYK hopeful ( List of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim managers), that I submitted under July 2nd. Could your review it? I plan to actually improve to FL Status, but not right now. Right now, I want to get it to DYK standards, then work at FL.-- LAA Fan 21:23, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

This barnstar is hereby awarded to RyRy for being one of the most helpful users Wikipedia has to offer. Even when you are unsure of something, you direct me to someone who can help me. Thanks for the help. Cheers.-- LAA Fan 21:33, 4 July 2008 (UTC) |
Unfortunately, no. An image of Garry Roggenburk would faill NFCC criteria #1.
“ | Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created, that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose. | ” |
Garry Roggenburk is currently a pitching coach and a GM for an existing baseball team. In other words, could someone see him coaching and take a picture of him? Definitely. Nearly all currently active baseball player/coach etc. have a free use image or no image at all. I hope you understand, « Milk's Favorite Cøøkie 22:08, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Red Thunder 13:09, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the card, RyRy! Happy Independence Day to you too! :) Acalamari 16:09, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
I went through your last couple hundred user talk edits and found no evidence of incivility. Looking through your recent mainspace work (aside from the reverts), I saw some great work. Going through your edits to the Wikipedia space I saw good work at AFD and a bunch of reports to AIV. Good work. Useight ( talk) 16:56, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

What's the issue? -- MZMcBride ( talk) 05:21, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
A bit of a late reply, but neat card, and thanks. :) jj137 (talk) 18:28, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
What's with those two inputbox tags at the top of your page? What else can you make them do? Graham ( talk, contrib) 20:19, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
:) Thanks, PeterSymonds (talk) 06:43, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

hello,
I would like to 'thank you' for your immediate response, rest assured that all the tips and notes that you have given me will be explored and used as i navigate thru my endeavors here in wikipedia, am starting to learn (despite of the hardship of life and global "charming" i mean warming) how to navigate and design this, right now am filing ang filling up the lost years of my documentations before i do a rough sketch of my page and the articles themselves, hopely this won't be complicated, i will let you know what happens next, am very excited with my new world, thank you very much ryan, hope to hear from you soon...-- Oscardozi ( talk) 17:02, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Duffbeerforme ( talk) 11:26, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

hi again! thanks so much for your help. I noticed that on the title of the article the L on Levy is lower case, thus the title appears to be Henry levy. I clicked on edit but it wont let me change it, how can I change it? thanks!

I have started to work on another DYK to go along with my other two current submissions. The page is Bob Allen (Cleveland Indians) However, after expanding to the best of my limits for this player, I found I came up short in terms of main text (is about 1,350 with characters right now). Would you be willing to help with this. If you do, I would gladly submit the article as a co-nomination. -- LAA Fan 17:01, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm sorry about not getting back to you on those DYK noms. (they're now gone...) I recently had my wisdom teeth out and my wikitime has been limited somewhat. Again, sorry about that. Thingg ⊕ ⊗ 17:03, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
Hi there, I saw you listed at Wikipedia:PRV#General copyediting as a copyeditor. I was wondering if you would copyedit Mangalore which is a city article. The article is already a GA and it uses UK English. Hope that's not a problem. Language is very simple and the prose is quite precise. Copyediting won't take much of your time. Thanks!.
