On 8 March 2022, it was proposed that this article be moved from Gorō Miyazaki to Goro Miyazaki. The result of the discussion was moved. |
This section gives very few sources, listing only among the most minor of the film's critical achievements, and focusing on the Bunshun Raspberry Award - which is itself a group of 32 film critics, which have a particular bias regarding anime movies. I strongly suggest the original article from them being cited and properly translated, and a more balanced look at the movie's critical reception replace the present state of this section. The result of the move request was: moved. ( closed by non-admin page mover) – robertsky ( talk) 13:35, 27 March 2022 (UTC)
Gorō Miyazaki → Goro Miyazaki – Considering the guidelines at WP:SPNC, which state that "For minor spelling variations (capitalization, diacritics, punctuation and spacing after initials, etc.): when a consistent and unambiguous self-published version exists, it is usually followed", and those for modern Japanese names, which state that, if no "most commonly used name" can be established, "Use the form personally or professionally used by the person, if available in the English/Latin alphabet", I believe the title of this article should be "Goro Miyazaki", without a macron.
Professional press articles are split between romanizing the name as Gorō, Gorô, or Goro. As there is a lack of consensus between them, then, following the guidelines I linked to above, we should refer to what the person themselves appears to prefer.
Although Studio Ghibli's own site does not give Roman names for its staff (at least, I haven't seen any on it), official media closely related to the studio predominantly uses "Goro" without any macron or circumflex, including the Japanese site for Earwig and the Witch (see "GORO" near the top of the page) and Wild Bunch's web pages, posters and press kits for Earthsea, Poppy Hill, and Earwig (the French poster for the last of those uses Gorō, but the English-language web page and press kit use Goro).
The official Northern American site for Studio Ghibli, run for Ghibli by their NA distributor, GKIDS, uses Goro.
Goro is also used on all the covers of the US and UK disc releases of his works that I've found:
@ TechnoSquirrel69: Two aspects to address, neutrality and qualifying notability. (1) I don't think it's neutral because you wouldn't expect Hayao Miyazaki's article to open with "he's the father of Goro Miyazaki". It's a true statement, but it's not balanced presentation of the facts. I saw a similar issue with article for Elisabeth Murdoch opening with "her father is Rupert Murdoch", which is especially problematic given that's a common problem with articles about women. (2) It does not qualify notability; Miyazaki is an accomplished animation director and has designed and managed commercially successful entertainment sites, as covered across reliable independent sources. Doesn't have inclusion here just cause he's son of another famous director. Indeed, there isn't article on Keisuke Miyazaki because of that! Though I suppose the exception to this rule is articles on royalty. JAYFAX ( talk) 19:35, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
