Needs the year she fled, for context. I assumed at first it was a reference to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1934, and was surprised to see it was a later much less publicized visa incident in the 1950s.

Other problems: - The hook is barely under 200 characters and can be shortened.

Overall: Shorter is better, and this hook (193 characters) can be shortened without changing the meaning. How do you feel about this 154-character alternative?
