I joined the FCO in Oct 1986 and left in June 2000. I was head of the Iran section from Sept 1998 (beginning just after the rapprochement with Iran over the Salman Rushdie case) until June 2000 (just before the press crackdown that effectively brought president Khatami's reform experiment to a close).
