When a rikishi retires and you remove him from the active list PLEASE add him to the List of past sumo wrestlers, and when you do please put him in the list in the order of the year and basho he joined sumo, as all others in the list are organized as. Thank you! :) FourTildes ( talk) 12:10, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
This article, specifically, is a compilation of all the currently active professional sumo wrestlers who have individual articles on English wikipedia. Most of the wrestlers listed have been ranked in the makuuchi division (either currently or previously) . Upon retirement, the wrestlers' article links are moved to List of past sumo wrestlers. For the sake of completeness any wrestlers that are currently ranked in the most followed makuuchi division have a listing whether they have an article or not, hence a few red links at times.
Though it once had consensus, the criteria for rikishi to warrant an article is now being disregarded for the most part, so I am deleting any reference to these rules. There seem to be enough contributors, for the time being anyway, that all rikishi articles will be updated without taxing contributors too heavily. FourTildes ( talk) 11:18, 4 November 2017 (UTC)
It seems efficacious to be able to sort the lists by ranks, so I devised a system to keep the sorting script from simply sorting alphabetically. For the list to sort wrestlers by their ranks top/down, I devised the following, revised, system:
The following code is before the rank name in the rank column:
data-sort-value="x"
The X needs to be replaced by an alphabetical "code" corresponding to the "division":
The letter must be followed by the wrestler's rank and e or west, for example: data-sort-value="e15e" is the sorting for "Maegashira 15 East" The rank must still be written out after the sorting in order to show up in the list.
The following wrestlers are no longer in makuuchi and don't have an article on wiki, so they have been relegated off the list. However, so their info is not lost, and can be easily reposted should they reach makuuchi again and/or otherwise merit their own article, their column info has been put here for later reference. Hit edit to get access to their full markup. Incidentally, the rule of thumb is that a wrestler should get an article when he has had 3 winning tournaments in makuuchi or 6 tournaments (winning or otherwise) in total. A wrestler can also get an article if he has another reason for notability, such as Jōkōryū achieving the most consecutive wins from his debut. FourTildes ( talk) 02:37, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

Divisions were originally added in to simplify the current ranking updating process for those wrestlers below makuuchi. Now that all active wrestlers have full tables, this is no longer necessary. Though it looks nice to have divisions listed as separate headings, it would save a lot of time if they were eliminated. This won't affect sorting etc. I am going to go ahead : ) but criticism is welcome and it would be easy to revert back. I have copied the section headings here for possible future use. Hit edit to get full access to their full markup. (Don't forget to re-add equals marks == == to titles if/when used)

Would there be any support for the idea of including a column for the kanji name of the wrestlers? I think it would be of benefit to people who can already read the Japanese names, as well as those trying to learn. AtHomeIn神戸 ( talk) 05:14, 26 January 2015 (UTC)
Actually, I think it might be a good idea. My only concern, really, is that the table would get even wider. I suppose as people are getting bigger and bigger PC screens it is not such an issue... hmmmm... FourTildes ( talk) 08:13, 26 January 2015 (UTC)
Forgive edit mess you might have seen, I thought I was editing my sandbox but I was editing the actual article, which I have now reverted. Anyway, I couldn't stop myself from seeing what it might look like. It could be doable. Here is a beginning in my sandbox. FourTildes ( talk) 08:39, 26 January 2015 (UTC)
Sure, feel free. I am still stuck on whether to have their full names in both boxes or to just have their main name in both boxes. I flirted briefly with the idea of having the name under the English name. I'm curious what that would look like. Would you mind making a sample with a few columns that are done that way before we proceed? FourTildes ( talk) 21:19, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
Good stuff. To be honest, I think I like the style you have come up with in your sandbox better. It also doesn't clutter things up with more columns; less chance of the table getting crunched on smaller screens. It also seems pretty clear that it is only the kanji for the main shikona. My vote is to go with this way. Would you mind doing the honors on a full table? Oh, by the way, off the top of my head: Madonna Louise Ciccone - but I've always had a thing for names. ;) FourTildes ( talk) 06:04, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
The latest update has Kisenosato and Terunofuji both at O1E. That can't be right, can it? Tigerboy1966 07:07, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
I have decided to institute/try out an idea I've had for a while of linking an English article-less rikishi with his Japanese wiki article, so anybody who is curious can at least see a rikishi's picture in the Japanese version (most of which are provided by some guy named FourTildes, also known by his Japanese handle Furuboku...) They might also be able to suss out the tourney table and a little more info. You can how this works with Daieisho's entry. I have noticed other language wikis link English articles regularly (with the tacit acknowledgement that enwiki has a lot more articles). You can see this in the French wiki banzuke article for example. I see this as a useful alternative to giving an English article to every wrestler who manages to crawl his way to makuuchi once or twice. Thoughts? FourTildes ( talk) 02:08, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
OK, I have a potentially controversial question/idea. This is Goeido's first tournament at Ozeki 1 East. Should this be acknowledged with a bolding of his rank for this tournament? In the past we have bolded wrestlers who achieved, for example Maegashira 3 EAST as their highest rank even though they had at some point previously achieved the slightly lower Maegashira 3 WEST as their highest achievement before. This was to acknowledge this is their true highest rank even if only slightly higher. But I know this time around, though it follows the same logic that was unquestioned before, bolding his rank will garner more criticism and questions because Goeido is high profile. I think bolding is the way to go, as it follows previous practice, and because it is worthy acknowledgement. But I am open to discussion. FourTildes ( talk) 22:08, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
Could a reader of Japanese check that the kanji underneath Takakeisho's name is correct? I'm not sure if it's just Takakeisho, his full shikona, or his real name Sato. Thanks.-- Pawnkingthree ( talk) 15:47, 30 December 2016 (UTC)
What do we make of the addition of a "real name" column and flag icons? Unfortunately the (anon IP) editor who began this seems to have stopped halfway through. I don't mind the flags myself but I'm not sure the real names are really noteworthy.-- Pawnkingthree ( talk) 15:22, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
I did see it but was hoping the anon user would get round to fixing it up. Yes, agreed: Flags aren't an overly cumbersome addition (I think this is not the first time someone has attempted to add them in; and given name is too much, table is crowded enough as it is. This appears to be what we think. :) FourTildes ( talk) 13:23, 6 June 2017 (UTC)
A conflict between a specific wrestler's page and this table has me wondering. I note that the Birthplace column, gives Wakaichiro as born in Nagasaki, yet his page says he was born at Houston, Texas (but cites as its source an article that only says he 'grew up' in Houston). This is an issue that needs to be dealt with regarding this specific wrestler, , but the conflict makes me wonder. Is the 'Birthplace' column truly representing their place of birth, or is this just a translation of Shusshin with the data formally listed for the reshiki, which as I understand it can likewise mean 'Hometown' (often, but not always, the same thing)? Do we know these are birthplaces given? Agricolae ( talk) 23:35, 26 August 2018 (UTC)
Does anyone know what's happened to Kagamio? I think this would be the first case of a rikishi with an article falling off the banzuke completely... unless he's handed in his retirement papers of course. Pawnkingthree ( talk) 01:54, 30 August 2021 (UTC)
