As far as I can understand (the babelfish translation), he was a senior governmental officer. Scouting is only mentioned in the picture's subtitle. --

He was important (but not in Hong Kong): this is
Goto Shimpei, the first Chief Scout of Japan. Wim van Dorst (

Hmmm.. interesting. I always find it neat to see the connections between Chinese pronunciation and Japanese. Houteng Xinping doesn't sound entirely unlike Goto Shimpei. Neat.

A beautiful start, and the pictures are great. But for such an important figure (hell, even i've heard of him, and I normally focus on pre-Meiji), the article's awfully short.
