suggests that Alnitak is on the left - ie, western - end of Orion's belt. Or have I misread that?

The article (and http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap990713.html) states that the star Alnitak is the source of UV causing the ionisation which makes the nebula glow, but it also says that the nebula is 900 to 1500 light-years away, while the article on Alnitak says the star is only 736 light years from Earth - in other words, they're nowhere near each other but just happen to be aligned as viewed from Earth. Also, http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap070202.html suggests that the UV source is probably a star which is hidden from us by dust.
