The
contentious topics procedure applies to this page. This page is related to gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them, which has been
designated as a contentious topic.
This article should adhere to the gender identity guideline because it contains material about one or more
non-binary people. Precedence should be given to self-designation as reported in the most up-to-date reliable sources, anywhere in article space, even when it doesn't match what's most common in reliable sources. Any person whose gender might be questioned should be referred to by the pronouns, possessive adjectives, and gendered nouns (for example "man/woman", "waiter/waitress", "chairman/chairwoman") that reflect that person's latest expressed gender self-identification. Many, but not all, non-binary people go by
singular they pronouns, which are acceptable for use in articles. This applies in references to any phase of that person's life, unless the subject has indicated a preference otherwise. Former, pre-transition names may only be included if the person was notable while using the name; outside of the main biographical article, such names should only appear once, in a footnote or parentheses. If material violating this guideline is repeatedly inserted, or if there are other related issues, please report the issue to the LGBT WikiProject, or, in the case of living people, to the BLP noticeboard.
Confusion over birth year
When I
first created this bio in March 2023, I listed Peña's approximate birth year as 1992 or 1993 based on a statement in an
article in Cosmopolitan published in July 2022 that she was 29 years old. This article is and was linked from the bio of Peña's
verified Instagram page; it wasn't difficult to find.
Since then, several anonymous edits have removed that birthdate from the article (
1,
2,
3), the most recent with an edit summary stating "Age is not correct according to actor". I do not know if this editor or editors is affiliated with Peña or is basing this statement or assumption on
Peña's IMDb page, which currently states that Peña was born in March 2001. But
IMDb is not considered a reliable source on Wikipedia.
The only website I could find that placed Peña's birth year as 2001 was an
interview published last month in Latin Heat that described her as a "twenty-two-year-old". I
added this source and updated her estimated age accordingly. But I then found articles on her middle and high school websites stating that she graduated in
2007 and
2011 respectively. That she - or most anyone - would have graduated from middle school (eighth grade) at the age of six and high school at the age of 10 is implausible at best.
