Clarify defection story, please

I found this fascinating fragment of Japanese history by clicking Random article. I repaired as much of the slightly inexpert English as I could. All of the sense was clear except for one sentence explaining Nagaharu's motivation for defecting from the Oda cause. There seemed to be a clause missing. I made a guess at what it must be, and added a bracketed plea for help; it's quite crucial to the story and somebody who actually knows some Japanese history should fact-check it.
