No, unlike 'orc', 'troll', 'warg', 'ent', et cetera the term 'balrog' was not something Tolkien borrowed and re-interpreted from earlier mythology, but rather something which he constructed himself. -- CBD 17:47, 29 July 2006 (UTC) reply
