Maloarkhangelsk ( Russian: Малоарха́нгельск) is a town and the administrative center of Maloarkhangelsky District in Oryol Oblast, Russia, located 82 kilometers (51 mi) south of Oryol, the administrative center of the oblast. Population: 3,620 ( 2010 Russian census); [2] 3,962 ( 2002 Census); [8] 4,294 ( 1989 Soviet census). [9]
The village of Arkhangelskoye (Арх́ангельское), which was established in the 17th century, was granted town status in 1778 and renamed Maly Arkhangelsky (Ма́лый Арха́нгельский).[ citation needed] Later, the name transformed into "Maloarkhangelsk".[ citation needed] During World War II, the town was under German occupation from 11 November 1941 until 23 February 1943.
