Atkarsky District ( Russian: Атка́рский райо́н) is an administrative [1] and municipal [6] district ( raion), one of the thirty-eight in Saratov Oblast, Russia. It is located in the northwest of the oblast. The area of the district is 2,700 square kilometers (1,000 sq mi). [3] Its administrative center is the town of Atkarsk [2] (which is not administratively a part of the district). [9] Population: 16,550 ( 2010 Census); [4] 17,915 ( 2002 Census); [10] 16,994 ( 1989 Soviet census). [11]
Within the framework of administrative divisions, Atkarsky District is one of the thirty-eight in the oblast. [1] The town of Atkarsk serves as its administrative center, [2] despite being incorporated separately as a town under oblast jurisdiction—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts. [9]
As a municipal division, the district is incorporated as Atkarsky Municipal District, [6] with Atkarsk Town Under Oblast Jurisdiction being incorporated within it as Atkarsk Urban Settlement. [7]
