Late in the year[4] Louisa, daughter of
John and Elizabeth Guard, is born at
Port Underwood. She is the first female European child born in the
South Island.[5][6]

New Zealand Encyclopaedia 1966: Matatmata) suggest the mission at Matamata was established at this time. This appears to have been confused with the establishment of the Puriri mission.
