Personally I prefer "the candidate" if I don't know the gender, because I don't like implying plurality. Useight ( talk) 17:56, 6 February 2009 (UTC) reply
American style guides ( AP Stylebook, Chicago) advise against both "his or her" (etc.) and the "singular they". Of course, we have to deal with the context of anonymity more often than journalists do, so I cut people some slack in both directions, but I try to rephrase when I can ("the candidate"), or poke around trying to find out if they've committed to a gender. - Dan Dank55 ( push to talk) 18:32, 6 February 2009 (UTC) reply
I try to use non clunky neutral gender phraseology myself, sometimes in Real Life use she/he though am really not keen on the singular they. But "IMHO these two diffs demonstrate the wrong attitude." would have been gender neutral. Were Spiel Chequers 18:53, 6 February 2009 (UTC) reply
