Long comment concerning IP user revert and CC disambig

Thanks for bringing up your concern. I believe this is a special case, and not representative of my warning of anons. I use the templates for obvious vandalism, and try to write personalize messages for WP:EL and other not obvious vandalism issues. However, I've been watching Catholic Church (disambiguation) for a while now (first edit was on 3 July 2006). I have noticed a pattern. An anon editor comes along and bolds only one of the roughly dozen churches listed in the lead. 10:30, 7 July 2006 14:45, 7 July 2006 06:40, 12 July 2006 09:42, 13 July 2006 09:47, 13 July 2006 13:16, 13 July 2006 15:11, 18 July 2006 06:52, 19 July 2006 20 July 2006 01:34, 21 July 2006 11:57, 22 July 2006 01:02, 28 July 2006 13:30, 28 July 2006 02:39, 29 July 2006 10:31, 1 August 2006 12:04, 13 September 2006 (ok, I'm going to stop listing them, I think I've made my point. the edits continue) All of these edits inserted the bolding of the RCC. I believe this was the first diff of a revert 07:26, 7 July 2006 the editor was User:TSP and edit summary was Revert; Roman Catholic Church does not point here, so that term should not be in bold; and the Pope is only "Supreme Pontiff" to those who recognise his primacy, making this title meaningless. Myself, TSP, User:Garzo, User:Fishhead64, and probably others all reverted these edits. You can see by Novemeber, I had become frustrated with my [ summary PLEASE stop. rv bolding by repeated vandal. This is also when I went to talk: Talk:Catholic Church (disambiguation)#Slow edit war, where the user replied with a cryptic message. When the same edits started to arise again recently, I started warning the user, (i.e. [2], [3], and [4]). You will note that I started in with the template with the 3rd warning, but when the vandalism happened again, I warned with the 3rd warning again. This was an example of me being cautious. While I personally believe that a) based on the similar IP addresses (mostly all starting with 210.213..) I believe that this is either the same editor, or that the edits in question are related and b) based on the history of this page, that the editor should know better, plus the talk page comment, reverts by multiple editors, and now warnings also bolster the case that the editor should know better. That said, I however, did not feel comfortable giving a last warning on an anon editor with no contribution history (even though in my gut, based on the IP address similarity, I think it is the same person). Taking rash actions based on a gut feeling isn't always prudent. In retrospect, I could have tried to dialog even more with the user, but it seems like the purpose of this user's actions on wikipedia is to insert bold marks around the phrase Roman Catholic Church, and nothing more. Thanks for bringing up this issue, and I hope I have been able to at least give my perspective and share some background on the 'conflict'.- Andrew c 23:31, 27 June 2007 (UTC) reply
