High turnout

I have been struck by the very high turnout for both of the current RfAs. I assume this is because of the additional notice that is now being given to the community whenever there is an active RfA. There were some worries that the additional publicity might attract vandals and mindless or silly !votes, but I have been impressed by the quality as well as the quantity of the comments (with a single exception that has been dealt with). -- MelanieN ( talk) 19:31, 18 December 2015 (UTC) reply

A fuller explanation of why GA and adminship go hand-in-hand couldn't hurt (especially considering 78.26 has created over 100 articles). Opposing solely because a candidate has only had one article manage to get through the long, grueling process of GA does seem a bit harsh. clpo13_(

Absolutely no offense was intended, I quite honestly thought it was a joke. There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to see a potential admin have actual content work, but in that respect this candidate has contributed substantially, with over a hundred articles added to the encyclopedia. It's really pretty impressive, and most people would assign that more credit than a few GAs. Your oppose seems exceptionally harsh to me as well. Not all content writers participate in the GA/FA process, and that certainly doesn't ever disqualify them from adminship. You're entitled to your own RfA standards, but that seems like a pretty arbitrary thing to single out and oppose over. Swarm ♠ 04:04, 21 December 2015 (UTC) reply

Joseph2302 is entitled to his opinion. If the candidate has created numerous articles but only one of them is ranked good, one might think that the rest are not so good. My impression is that this is a systemic problem due mainly to the unrewarding nature of the GA process; I've not found it motivating myself. In so far as the RfA process gives some weight to edit count but not so much to the quality of those edits and articles, then it's arguably part of the problem. Perhaps we can ask the candidate why it is that only one article is GA rather than most of them? What is it about the process or topics that has been holding them back? Andrew D. That one, I can answer. If one has worked on a substantial article, then bringing it to GA status is a bit of a gauntlet. If one makes a horde of articles on, say, geographical features (small residential subdivision "lakes" etc.) (where the verifiability of claims is hyper-simple), then the gauntlet is far easier. "GA"s are not all equal -- in my opinion the work on a "difficult" article should be far more important and valued than "counting coup" for easy articles. (I suspect I am the only person who took a massively bloated article and whittled it down to GA status, and I found that an interesting experience. My other GA was for an article which had a long history of POV-fights, which I also found to be an interesting excursion. I am banned from seeking a third GA on an article on an American writer who intersects with "US Politics broadly defined") but Mark Twain should be brought up to GA status again, for sure.) Joseph2302 has deliberately vandalised Wikipedia lately (with this offensive edit where he moves the Ipswich Town F.C. article to "Tractor scum") and refused to acknowledge it. Despite being a long-term editor, this kind of edit is clearly indicative of an editor who is not here to improve the Wikipedia. I suggest the !vote is entirely disregarded. Although, his reason for opposition is pointless, Wikipedia is not censored and we cannot control the voters' criteria for supporting or opposing any RfA candidate. Would have liked to have been pinged to this discussion, as it raises a number of interesting points. Most notably, having read the answer to #13, I see that many of my concerns have been alleviated. My main concern was that DYK take a comparatively small amount of effort, whereas GA take a lot of effort, which made me question their commitment levels (why aren't more of the articles GA?). I think their answer to #13 alleviates these concerns, as the reason for the articles not being GA is the lack of available information, not 78.26 lack of commitment to the articles once created. Assuming this were still open, I'd probably retract my oppose vote. Also I agree that Wikipedia is based on consensus, but I think people should be entitled to their opinions- after all, discussions are good and can help create a consensus.
