This election is to appoint the project coordinator team for one year, from 30 September 2019 to 29 September 2020. A total of ten coordinators will be elected, including the lead coordinator(s), with scope to vary the total number of coordinators if there is a tie or near-tie for the last position. Coordinators are generally responsible for maintaining all of the procedural and administrative aspects of the project. All of the coordinators, and especially the lead coordinator(s), serve as the designated points-of-contact for procedural issues and focus on specific areas requiring special attention. They are not, however, endowed with any special executive powers.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the project coordinators is the maintenance and housekeeping work involved in keeping the project and its internal processes running smoothly; this includes a variety of tasks, such as keeping the announcement and open task lists updated, overseeing the assessment and review processes, managing the proposal and creation of task forces, and so forth. There is fairly little involved that couldn't theoretically be done by any other editor, of course—in only a few places have the coordinators been explicitly written into a process—but, since experience suggests that people tend to assume that someone else is doing whatever needs to be done, it has proven beneficial to formally delegate responsibility for this administrative work to a specified group.

The coordinators also have several additional roles. They serve as the project's designated points of contact, and are explicitly listed as people to whom questions can be directed in a variety of places around the project. In addition, they have (highly informal) roles in leading the drafting of project guidelines, overseeing the implementation of project decisions on issues like category schemes and template use, and helping to resolve disputes and keep discussions from becoming heated and unproductive.

• The election will be conducted using simple approval voting. Any member of the project may support as many of the candidates as they wish. Membership of the project is broadly construed as any editor currently involved in the project's work. The candidate with the highest number of endorsements will become the lead coordinator (provided he or she is willing to assume the post); this position may be shared in the event that multiple candidates receive the highest number of endorsements. The remaining candidates will be appointed as coordinators to a maximum of ten appointments (including the lead coordinator), although the number of coordinators may be increased or reduced if there is a tie or near-tie for the last position.

• Both project members and interested outside parties are encouraged to ask questions of the nominees or make general comments.

This project is among the first I actively participated in since I began in 2011. My work earned me the Military History Newcomer Award in 2012, the same year I ran for the coordinator election. While failing to secure the position, I garnered the most support votes for any newcomer then. Despite my sporadic work in the past year, I remain committed to serving the wider audience of Wikipedia.

• What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • As a contest participant and reviewer through the years, I place all of my contributions in high regard. However, I believe if I am to single out a laurel for my work in the project so far, it is my return to the contest with a GA for Kawaji Toshiyoshi and Antonio Luna. Both are not my original creations, but seeing them in a neglected state, I cannot help but do what I can. A 2015 film popularized the Filipino general, particularly in the Philippines, and since then, he has figured largely in Filipino society recently. Some even pointed out the Luna influence in the 2016 election. I also have created a number of DYK articles which are related to this project, and promoted yet more articles to B-class, one of the objectives of this project that appears to be lagging behind. These are not star achievements such as FA, but I believe in the step by step process in improving the project in our own way.
• What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
  • I stick to what I have stated before are my few positive qualities, which includes industry and dedication, that could contribute in this project. While many of the my greater contributions are confined in the Filipino context, I have been working on lending my expertise to Asian military histories, particularly those related to the colonial periods. In my personal observation, the project is lacking in active editors with specialization in areas beyond American and European spheres. It would be a great boost for the project to continually have editors who can also work with such lesser known areas. As a historian at heart and in practice, I make it a guiding principle that bias and prejudice ought to be minimized if we are to hope that what we write contributes to the discipline, and to the education of the general public. At best, conclusions in history are tentative. This dynamic nature of our field is the very reason why we go on "doing the dirty work" even if these are already part of our past.

  • My experience editing in Wikipedia spans for years, and I believe I have successfully brought these to the table. Primarily, I see myself more as a support figure for the project, especially in the lesser known areas of interest among our paramount contributors. In my mind, this provides us the balance needed to keep the project growing in every field possible. Ultimately, my willingness towards cooperation with the coordinators must also be noted.     • @ Arius1998: G'day, thank you for your response. I hope that you will not take offense, though, but I do not feel that your response addresses my question fully at this stage. I don't doubt your experience or contributions as an editor -- indeed we have worked together on a few of your GAs -- and I remain impressed by those efforts. My concern, though, is that looking over your contributions from the last year, I don't see much involvement in co-ord like, or project-related, tasks aside from maybe [1]. If I was to offer my support to you as a co-ordinator for the next term (and I would like to), would you endeavour to get involved in more co-ord like aspects? There are many things that a co-ord can do -- behind the scenes stuff and other, more visible tasks if you wish -- and I'm not expecting that you do all of them, or devote a lot of extra time to them. Indeed, I understand that we all have competing pressures for our time as volunteers. For instance, you could get involved with responding to queries on the Milhist talk page on a semi regular basis (maybe ten minutes of your time here and there); you could help close A-class reviews when they are ready (the task is very easy now due to Hawkeye's bot); you could help hand out A-Class Medals and other awards (again very easy due to Milhistbox); you could help with The Bugle (for instance even just a proof read and quick copy edit if necessary helps, or you could write a book review or op ed if it picqued your interest); or, perhaps the easiest thing you could do would be to help tally up the monthly contest and verify entries. Even responding to assessment requests on WP:MHA can be of help, but that isn't really a co-ord task per se, although I would expect that if there was a long lasting backlog that a co-ord would step in and help clean it up. I say these things not to put you on the spot, but to help you explain to people why they should vote for you; please take some time and have a think about what you would be prepared to get involved with.       • Thank you for this. I understand this concern, and admittedly, the competing demands (not to mention temporary external conditions such as intermittent internet connection) have recently taken a toll in my work, particularly for this project. This is not a pleasing experience. However, I believe in my heart that I can remain committed to contributing when I can. Truly, I am impressed at how our coordinators can do so many, and I consider that so far, mine has been meager in comparison despite my personal initiative. Then again, we also have to ensure that work is not duplicating, or worsening, what has already been accomplished. In that regard, I am prepared to help in which field my specialization is needed, may it be assessments and queries, or backlog reduction and writing for the newsletter. • I'm proud to keep the project alive by reviewing over 100 FA/FL, ACR and GANs this year alone.

• I'm mainly active here, most of the things I do are reviewing nominations. I do not describe myself as an experienced reviewer 'cause you'll learn something new every single day. But I keep my eyes on those reviews, in case someone forgot something or didn't see the small issues there. My goal is keeping the project alive and running. I'm also ready to do my duty as a co-ord, learn new things and listen to the issues.

• Good question AR, if I missed some nominations, then, I would get involved to close them. I see myself closing nominations, closing the monthly contest and helping my teammates in a case for a drive or other events like the Historian of the Year, Newcomer of the Year or for the Quarterly reviewing awards. Or even if someone needs help in The Bugle I'm ready to take the job. Of course, because I never have been a co-ord, everything would be new to me and need a little time to get into the job. I have been active for less than two years and so feel a little precocious in making this nomination. Nevertheless, MilHist has become my Wiki-home over the past twenty months and I have much appreciated the wonderful and creative space made available for me. Working as a coordinator seems a useful way of partially paying back for the use of the "playground" and perhaps helping to maintain it as the collegiate place that it is.

• What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • This time last year I wanted to make a start on getting to grips with the ACR and FAC processes, and I am pleased to have had a few articles go through both processes and to have reviewed over 90 ACRs and FACs (combined) since the turn of the year.
• What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
  • Some enthusiasm, some time, and some experience of being new round here and finding some of the "obvious" and/or assumed procedures not so. As a natural Wikignome I actually enjoy some of the more repetitive or routine activities, so I may be able to free some of the more experienced coordinators' time up for some of the more high-skill activities.

• I am cognisant of the "Post Election" advice in "Becoming a Coordinator" to "Take a pause to observe how things are done and what the coordinators do. Ask the lead coordinator how you might best contribute." I intend to do both of those, especially the latter. I certainly hope to be active in closing A-class reviews and closing the monthly contest. Always happy to work with, he has a lot of work done in the last two years and he made at least 13 articles to FAs all of them are all battles from a war which hasn't a lot of attention before he came in the scéne. • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • I have contributed to 74 featured articles, 116 A-class articles and 289 good articles. In recent times most of my articles have been about the British and American nuclear weapons programs. I also contribute articles (and sections of articles) on logistics. I read a lot of MilHist and have contributed book reviews to The Bugle. I have served the project as a coordinator from 2011 to 2016, and since 2018. I was awarded the Golden Wiki for the project’s member of the year in 2012, and the Silver Wiki for runner-up in 2014 and 2016. (I've never been Editor of the Week though. Well done Gog the Mild!)

• What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
  • Mainly my writing and research skills. I also maintain the MilHistBot, which performs many of the routine admin chores that used to take up the coordinators' time.

  • My biggest achievement in the past year has been the automation of the quarterly awards. This had become most time intensive of the coordinators' tasks. It took many hours of work to compile the review tallies by hand. The MilHistBot now compiles the nominations in just a few seconds. A coordinator approves, and the Bot hands out the awards. The task looked formidable when I took it on, but could be broken down into its separate components, and proceeded steadily from there. 21. Here we are again, if someone made a bot to make MILHIST easier than before then I believe you did a quiet good job. We have great and active people here with one goal and let's be honest some people goes to next level. People like Hawkeye want to expand their goals not only here but in other projects too. 12. Laziges is maybe one of the most secret co-ords in my opnion. But maybe he's not a lot in the scénes doesn't mean he's not there. I have been editing articles on military history topics since I first created an account back in 2014, but I did not actually become truly active in the project until late 2015. Since then, I have mostly edited in project areas, and worked on content creation in the areas of Russian, Soviet, and CIS military history as well as that of the United States. I was elected coordinator last year, and have found it an interesting experience.

Comments and questions for Kges1901

• What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • I am most proud of helping to improve the average quality of the Russian, Soviet, and CIS articles, having written nearly a hundred biographies of Soviet generals, my three FAs, fifteen A-class, and 30+ GAs. Some of these are about relatively obscure units and I believe have helped to illuminate under-covered areas.

• What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
  • I am extremely active, which helps in reducing specific coord backlogs, such as checking the MILHIST contest at the end of the month, which is a time intensive exercise, and closing A-class reviews.

  • In my first term as coordinator I started a review of the Incubator for new task forces that resulted in the archiving of a large number of inactive projects and the creation of the Indian military history task force, as the incubator should not act as a yearslong web host. I closed nineteen A-class reviews, approved awards, checked contest entries, closing the latter for several months.

17. Always looking for a Soviet Army's article who's not at least B. You've people whom are working with their ARCs, FACs or GANs, but people like Kges try to get the minimum good article status on Wikipedia the B-class status. Most people forgot this class and are working with every article above B, people like him try to increase the B articles in Wikipedia which is really important and we ought to follow his footsteps. • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • I had a hand in creating the largest Featured Topic and created the second largest topic - these projects started more than a decade ago.
• What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
  • I'm very active, I have a lot of experience with the article writing and reviewing process, I've been a member of the project for a long time, and I'm an administrator, so if tasks come up that require those tools, I can help.

17. PB had a long road on Wikipedia and is still active on it like a decade ago. As a co-ord and former co-ord leader he has the experience in anything about the MILHIST. Everyone has a unique intrest in Wikipedia and his one is about war ships, we should all agree what his legacy is in the last 10 years. • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • My 49 Featured Articles/Lists, particularly my first FA, on the Chetnik leader Pavle Đurišić, and another on an Australian WWI commander Raymond Leane, but mainly my reviewing at FA/FL, ACR and GAN, which helps keep up the throughput of quality content created by members of the project. I also contribute a few things to the Bugle, mainly around recognition of milestones achieved by members of the project, and book reviews.
• What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
  • Because I'm retired, I'm here a lot, which helps with getting things done in a timely manner, and I am familiar with doing things like running drives, setting up the election, checking the monthly contest, MHOTY/MHNOTY etc, which are the main manual things coords have to do since Hawkeye7's wonderful Milhistbot came on the scene. If I get stuck with something, I know who to ask for help.

  • Talking strictly about coord duties, I set up and am running the current Backlog Banzai edit-a-thon, and have chased up many reviewers at Milhist ACR, listed and closed many Milhist ACRs, handed out A-Class Medals and Crosses in a timely manner, checked my fair share of monthly contest entries, handed out quarterly reviewing awards, and set up these election pages as well. 28. Oh boy where should I start? PM is here one of the most active co-ords (and he is a co-ord leader too) in the last year. Making a drive, a content, helping with the The Bugle, closing an ARC and reviewing a lot of nominations in the past year. Without him the nominations would be slowed down and people had to wait until someone else reviews it (which could be really long). Most of his work and legacy are his FAs about Austrialians and the former Yugoslavia. Keep it up mate, I'd love to see strong people like you, PM. Hopefully you'd stick here around mate. Cheers.   • I've contributed to Wikipedia's largest Featured Topic together with Parsecboy and we're closing in on finishing Operation Majestic Titan, a project to bring all 525 battleship and battlecruiser articles to Good Article status or better. It's only taken us a decade+ to get this far ;-)

  • While I'm a very prolific contributor, I also do a lot of reviewing, having over 750 Good Article reviews to my name. 22. Sturm is the last person who I wouldn't support. Like PB is he working about warships. His speed is like the cheetah of project one day he writes a new article and the next day it is ready for a GAN. Busy he is I'd say, in the last couple of months he reviewed a lot of ARCs, FACs and GANs. I wouldn't think this cheetah would stop in the near future not like he did in 2017 with his 5-month break. I have been involved with the MilHist project for several years now and have been a co-ordinator previously, beginning in 2016. I generally work on subjects relating to New Zealand military history and have brought a number of articles in this field to GA and A-Class. I am now starting to get the ball rolling on taking some of the articles I have been working on Featured Articles.   • Without a doubt, the improvement in coverage of New Zealand topics in the project.

Also from time to time I go on an assessment sprees, going into the backlog of articles yet to be assessed. 16. The only Kiwi I ever met in my life. There are a few Kiwis who work and be like Zawed, when most of world sleeps he works on his new projects his new articles. Most of his works are about Kiwi soldiers. Because New Zealand lies so far from the rest of the main world most people forgot the country.
