An alternative proposal

Why reinvent the wheel? I propose using an existing structure, the Wikipedia Portals. The portals already have well defined categories that we can use. If the main categories get too large and it is felt that we need a finer structure, the sub-categories can be used to further deliniate the type of expert needed.

I an addition to being an already existing structure, this also allows for leveraging existing expert communities. Perhaps the talk page for each portal could list of have a link to the "Expert needed" category for that Portal.

By using the portal scheme, the initial breakdown would be as follows:

  • Arts
  • Culture
  • History
  • Philosophy
  • Religion
  • Science
  • Mathematics
  • Society
  • People
  • Sports and Games
  • Technology
  • Geography

Actually that sounds pretty good. I think we should go with that. Maybe we could even avoid the trouble of creating the new templates by doing something like {{expert-portal|<Portal Name>}}, though I'm not sure how easy that would be to use to someone who doesn't know all the different portals already.-- Konstable 06:42, 19 June 2006 (UTC) reply
I like the {{ expert-portal}} idea. Since this isn't policy, how about we vote on it?-- Urthogie 13:54, 19 June 2006 (UTC) reply
I like this suggestion too, it looks good. -- Maelwys 17:53, 22 June 2006 (UTC) reply
Ok, there aren't too many people, but no one against it, so that's a good sign. I will see if I can get a (sample) template drawn up some time soon.-- Konstable 04:10, 23 June 2006 (UTC) reply
Sorry, coming to this discussion late, but I think this proposal makes sense, too. -- Heidijane 08:48, 24 June 2006 (UTC) reply

Template

Sorry this took so long! But I have created a template for this: {{ expert-portal}}. It takes a portal name as a parameter, and categorizes the article into Category:Pages needing expert attention on PortalName.-- Konstable 01:29, 28 June 2006 (UTC) reply

Now there is an issue of how to attach this to the current portals. Listing them all would probably be impractical, so I think just a link to the category would have to do.-- Konstable 01:33, 28 June 2006 (UTC) reply

Reviving this project

Looks like this project hasn't had any love in a while. I'm working on it now though. I've created the following categories based off the front page's listed portals.

Removed so people don't accidentally use them. -- Brad Beattie (talk) 15:54, 20 November 2006 (UTC) reply

Hopefully we can get the expert requests sorted into these and then we can create sub-categories based on the portals that currently exist. At that point, we can assign the categories to the appropriate portals. If anyone happens by this page, want to help? -- Brad Beattie (talk) 14:59, 19 November 2006 (UTC) reply

To avoid the casing issue with sub-portals, I'm moving everything over to Category:Pages needing expert attention from the PORTAL-NAME Portal. The template takes a name (e.g. Technology) and uses it to link to Portal:Technology and WikiProject Technology. Portals and WikiProjects can link to the categories in question to see if any requests have been passed their way. -- Brad Beattie (talk) 15:40, 20 November 2006 (UTC) reply
