  1. what is the highest winning margin who won
  2. what is the highest score by who

the 3rd highest margin between the two clubs? so who has the highest margin (and of course they would have been the winner on the day), and who of the two has the highest score - but only in games between the two? or who of the two has the highest score against all-comers? having already banned all South Australians, we may need to extend the ex-communication to everyone living west of Broken Hill :-) ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 03:31, 30 July 2006 (UTC) reply

Q52

In 1983 a controversy developed regarding the legality of the then VFL's clearance system. That will make a good questione one day, but I like to explore what happened the following year. In 1984 Footscray decided to play some fun and games of their own and recruited a player from South Australia mid season outside of the proper processes. In hindsight it was an absolute waste of time, the player in question lasted no more than 5 minutes when he came on off the bench, and was quite possibly the slowest footballer I have ever seen in my life (my one and only recollection of him is chasing an opposition player who drew away from him with every bounce of the ball). He was not to ever appear again in the VFL - who was this mystery player? ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 13:16, 31 July 2006 (UTC) reply

John Riley (although I didn't think he was that slow)? -- Roisterer 13:29, 31 July 2006 (UTC) reply
That's it! 13 minutes is pretty good for a tough question - he was clearly better than what he showed that day - he was probably underdone - but for all the controversy, it was hard to understand why the bullies had gone out on such a limb - and you have to recall at the time I would have been standing there on the outer in the freezing cold like any young male one-eyed supporter witnessing yet another home loss - I had yet to develop the impartial analytical mind I now possess! ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 20:37, 31 July 2006 (UTC) reply

Of course the number 54 reminds us all of that momentous day 52 years ago. But, I have one more question to add to my collection of debuts by skinny 17 year old kids that would go on to become out and out champions - although in this case - I am not sure how skinny he would have been. He debuted in 1951 and kicked a goal with his first kick in league football, upon which the tough backman who was playing on him told him in no uncertain terms: do that again and I'll break both yer legs! He never played a game in the reserves for the whole of his 20 season career. Who am I talking about? πίππύ δ'Ω∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 06:47, 1 August 2006 (UTC) reply

Well, this quiz is turning into a Port/Footscray speciality quiz, which isn't neccesarily a bad thing. Anyway, the number 55 reminds me of the first Port Adelaide player to transfer to the VFL. Q57

I have to admit, I shed a bit of a tear last weekend. We all know that Chris Grant broke the doggies' games record on the weekend, previously held by Doug Hawkins (1978-1994), who in turn broke Mr Football's record (1951-1970, non playing coach in 1971, with EJ jnr playing a year or two later for the remainder of the 70s). Ted broke the record of another great bulldog, who finished playing the year before Ted debuted. So in 4 players, we have an almost unbroken line of record holders from 1935 to the present day - and people try and down play the place aussie rules has in Australian history and culture! Anyway, who was this great bulldog that held the record which EJ Whitten broke? πίππύ δ'Ω∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 22:27, 7 August 2006 (UTC) reply

Round 19, 1981, was the week the umpires "went on strike" for not getting paid more for having to work on Sundays. So a whole raft of umpires debuted in that round - many of them from junior ranks - and several never umpired again. - Bricks J. Winzer 06:13, 9 August 2006 (UTC) reply

I can't remember that much detail that far back! (except everyone seemed bigger and better than me) I was only in it for the pie nights back then - one of which was held at the Footscray clubrooms, which was a great thrill. I do remember that he started becoming an umpire from around the age of 15 or 16, and I would occasionally see him around the neighbourhood in all white, perhaps heading off to do a local game. I remember an article on him a few years ago and they asked him who he barracked for as a kid. After trying to avoid the questoin, he said Williamstown - I think we all know that to be a half truth at best - take it from me, you only ever followed one team when you lived where we lived! πίππύ δ'Ω∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 12:49, 9 August 2006 (UTC) reply

You got there. Brodie Holland danced on Dancing with the Stars a couple seasons ago and came about 4th. He played 36 games for Freo and at the end of the 05 season had played 94 for Collingwood. Over to you. J a s rocks ( talk) 23:23, 29 July 2006 (UTC) reply

Yesterday West Coast def Adelaide, by 82 pts the third highest margin,

  1. what is the highest winning margin who won
  2. what is the highest score by who

Gnangarra 01:14, 30 July 2006 (UTC) reply

? Do you mean highest margin between WC & Adel? or just this season, or all teams all seasns?
the 3rd highest margin between the two clubs? so who has the highest margin (and of course they would have been the winner on the day), and who of the two has the highest score - but only in games between the two? or who of the two has the highest score against all-comers? having already banned all South Australians, we may need to extend the ex-communication to everyone living west of Broken Hill :-) ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 03:31, 30 July 2006 (UTC) reply
  • between WC and Adel whats the highest margin, highest score (its not the same game). Though if you want i'll accept both of Geelongs scores for all clubs, but (i want exact the score who they beat) Gnangarra 04:13, 30 July 2006 (UTC) reply
  • Both records are held by WC, only the highest margin is now required Gnangarra 04:36, 31 July 2006 (UTC) reply
  • Highest winning margin: WC 26:21:177 d Ade 5:12:42, margin of 135 points (ouch!). Highest score WC 29:13:187. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 05:04, 31 July 2006 (UTC) reply

What was the first recorded year that Aussie rules footy was played in New Zealand? (ps. sorry Gnagarra, didnt see you answering). J a s rocks ( talk) 08:15, 31 July 2006 (UTC) reply

  • I found this in an article on footy in NZ in wikipedia: Australian Football was introduced to New Zealand in 1876. A hybrid match was played in Dunedin, New Zealand. First half played according to rugby rules, second half according to Victorian Rules. So I'll offer 1876 as my answer. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 10:13, 31 July 2006 (UTC) reply

He debuted in the VFL in 1978 and played 55 games in an injury interrupted career before returning to Port to end his career. Who am I talking about? -- Roisterer 14:32, 2 August 2006 (UTC) reply

Max James, indeed! Your turn, good Sir (even if you are a Fremantle supporter). -- Roisterer 13:44, 4 August 2006 (UTC) reply
I have left a message on Mr Pope's talk page - I fear that he is getting over excited about Freo having almost sewn up a spot in the 8 - although I guess 5 straight wins is a decent effort in anyone's language - especially for a team that has the words "heave ho" in their club song! πίππύ δ'Ω∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 12:12, 6 August 2006 (UTC) reply

Sth Melbournes last home game Gnangarra 03:21, 9 August 2006 (UTC) reply
Actually that's not a bad guess, and may well be possible, but I'm unable to confirm that. Do you know that for sure? There is another event of almost equal importance that occurred that round, that affected all 6 games and had far-reaching consequences. If you are able to confirm that that was the Swans' last home game - it's yours! πίππύ δ'Ω∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 03:46, 9 August 2006 (UTC) reply
It was a guess and its wrong they played two more games rnd 20, against Geelong and rnd 22 against Nth Melb which was the last at lake oval, rnd 19 was at the MCG against Carlton. Gnangarra 05:15, 9 August 2006 (UTC) reply

Well done Bricks, that's it! I trust you will return to test us all! Re the umpires' strike, I didn't know this but Chris Mitchell debuted as an umpire that week and he went on to umpire some 340 games. As an umpire did Chris Mitchell make a good U/11s Vice Captain? -- Roisterer 12:34, 9 August 2006 (UTC) reply
