I don't check it often — is it well-maintained? As much as I hate to say it, I think we should set up a process for selected pictures and articles, it seems rather random right now. Pagrashtak02:05, 20 September 2006 (UTC)reply
Yeah it's pretty much random. One of the problems regarding what to enter on the portal is that cover art & screenshots can't usually be used under fair use, so I've been selecting mainly open-source games. One area that probably needs some work is the categories section, I think that's rather outdated. The Did you know? section is also not really maintained, however I do think that the portal is informative for users who are just browsing.

Ok, I'll do that then. But should we develop some kind of process for selecting which article gets put up? Having a poll for "Featured article of the week" or something like that.

A few points likely to come up in a featured portal nomination:
There's no list of major topics.
The DYK section lacks an archive.
Using the FA list from the project directly is a bit questionable. In particular, former featured articles aren't necessarily what you want to be presenting to readers.
The WikiProject list should be trimmed of dead projects.
The selected picture section should include an image credit where appropriate. What's the rotation schedule there, incidentally?
