Evidence submitted by LadyofShalott

PoliticianTexas has been banned for abusive use of multiple sockpuppets. One of his favorite articles to edit using puppets is Española Valley High School. User:NativeNorteño has been making the sorts of changes that PoliticianTexas favors such as altering the infobox [1], changing statistical information about the school [2], [3], [4], removing potentially negative (but sourced) information about the school [5], and removing referencing tags [6]. Ladyof Shalott 03:06, 8 August 2009 (UTC) reply

I am adding User:Nmunderdog to the report as another probable sockpuppet of PoliTex. His sole edit so far is to change the listed superintendant at another favorite article of PT: Taos High School - [7]. Note the many edits by different puppets. Ladyof Shalott 02:23, 10 August 2009 (UTC) reply

Evidence submited by Uncia

These are some diffs supporting the points raised by LadyofShalott. They list changes by the current suspect and by known socks of PolTx. Also let me point out that PolTx is a community-banned editor. Also I have added 174.131.211.49 ( talk) as a suspect sock in this case; this may help in Checkuser. All editors listed in the diffs below, except for NativeNorteño, are known socks of PolTx.

A note about the IP that was added to the investigation by Uncia: it's in a range that is reserved for IANA.org according to WHOIS. Another sockpupeteer, one who is thought/has claimed to use proxies used, by self admission, a similar address in a peculiar way 174.34.161.140 ( talk · contribs). Synchronism ( talk) 11:38, 9 August 2009 (UTC) reply

Doing a WHOIS on that IP address does give that result. However, doing a Geolocate on that IP address shows it resolving to Windstream Communications. This is the same ISP used by many of the PolTX sockpuppet IPs. Dori ❦ ( TalkContribsReview) ❦ 03:53, 11 August 2009 (UTC) reply
So it is likely not a proxy, but perhaps a recently assigned IP, which would explain the lack of whois info? Synchronism ( talk) 06:11, 11 August 2009 (UTC) reply

JTSalazar seems to be following in the typical style of PoliticianTexas's edits. His very first edit to the article on Española Valley High School (not his first edit to Wikipedia, just that article) was to revert back to a version created by previously confirmed sockpuppets of of PoliticianTexas (see previous checkuser case on this banned user), and he has continued to make multiple edits in a short period of time - typical of PT's socks - to that article (one of PT's favorites). He only uses edit summaries occasionally, another characteristic of PT and his sockpuppets. Ladyof Shalott 04:18, 1 December 2009 (UTC) reply

Obvious sock of PolTx:

  • Attempted to non-admin close after having voted on an AFD brought forth on the basis of the article being the creation of PolTx, [8] [9] praised the article graciously. [10]
  • Makes similar edits to those of PolTx and his socks, specifically: repeatedly inserting a new picture for the infobox at Albuquerque, New Mexico [11] [12] [13], these photos are generally not PolTx's original work though he often claims otherwise, they are often copyright violations (see User talk:DoriSmith/PolTXimgs; repeatedly marking municipal officeholder's political affiliations without clear explanation of the connection (New Mexican municipalities are non-partisan) linked to a RS [14] [15]; removing maintenance tags without addressing the problems given. [16] [17]
  • Shows similar editing interests to PolTx and his socks (see User talk:DoriSmith/PoliticianTexas#Commonly edited pages), especially high school athletics. [18]. Wiki Stalk Results for mostly recent socks: [19].

This report deals with PoliticianTexas ( talk · contribs), a community-banned editor who continues to create new sockpuppets; with Johnj stevenson ( talk · contribs) and SteveoJ ( talk · contribs), two indefinitely-blocked editors who are suspected socks of PoliticianTexas; and with N salazar ( talk · contribs). This report presents evidence that all four are the same editor.

The first three editors were considered in the February 2011 report (above this one). Checkuser concluded that Johnj stevenson and SteveoJ are the same editor, but could not confirm that they are PoliticianTexas, and on that basis they were blocked indefinitely as suspected sockpuppets. Evidence was presented there and more is presented here that they are PoliticianTexas, and that N salazar is the same as these three editors.

The N salazar account was created on Commons on 20 August 2010 and was dormant there from 20 August 2010 to 16 February 2011. Johnj stevenson and SteveoJ were blocked on 11 February 2011, and N salazar began editing on the English Wikipedia 4 days later on 15 February 2011, so the timing is suspicious. The strongest evidence is that all four have made extensive edits to Española Valley High School, a known PoliticianTexas magnet (his socks nearly always edit this article, and almost nobody else does). Other evidence (editors listed other than these four are known sockpuppets of PoliticianTexas):

Evidence that PoliticianTexas is Johnj stevenson and SteveoJ (also see evidence in the February 2011 sockpuppetry case)

Evidence that N salazar is Johnj stevenson and SteveoJ

1. IP edits the article to reinsert a custom, nonstandard infobox (a dead giveaway that the IP is PolTx) [20]
2. LadyofShalott reverts the IP [21]

PT appears to be back at it in his usual area of New Mexico high school articles. This edit in particular displays many of his trademarks, like messing with the school color formatting in the infobox, changing "high school" to "senior high school" ( previous sock's edit) and adding a section about the new NMPED school grades which is a verbatim copy of edits [24] [25] made by a previous sock. The CHsport account was created March 30, one day after last sock was blocked. Telltale edits include these to PT's very favorite article Española Valley High School, which include adjusting the school colors in the infobox, adding a lengthy sports-related table, and adjusting enrollment figures—all highly characteristic of PT's usual behavior. Also created Alamosa High School, which displays many PT characteristics like including an "unofficial" school color in the infobox and styling the school as a " public senior high school" in the lede.

For the IP, there is this edit to restore content added by the last sock. Has also edited many of PT's favorites including V. Sue Cleveland High School and Susana Martinez, and has added PT's custom "school grade" table to a number of articles. I usually don't bother reporting the IPs but this one has been active for some time and has quite a few edits. Camerafiend ( talk) 13:03, 7 April 2012 (UTC) reply

This IP's edits will look familiar to anyone familiar with PT. Almost all edits are related to favorite topics like Española, New Mexico, University of New Mexico, and Susana Martinez. Also displays PT's usual fascination with decorative custom formatting [33] and infoboxes/tables related to local politics [34] [35]. Edit warring [36] [37] over logos in a table created by PT in the first place (see SPI dated 11 October 2012 above) is particularly telling. Camerafiend ( talk) 21:09, 8 August 2013 (UTC) reply

Update I just became aware of User:Paulsen44. This account has made lots of crufty edits to Española Valley High School [38] [39], which is extremely characteristic of PT. Also updated the school's NMPED grade assessment, a statistic PT added in the first place [40]. Lots of edits related to NM local politics; created Albuquerque mayoral election, 2001, Albuquerque mayoral election, 2005, and Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court. I'm adding a CU request to see if anything else is sleeping in the sock drawer (hopefully the last named account isn't stale). Camerafiend ( talk) 14:43, 13 August 2013 (UTC) reply

The IP was given a duck block [41] following the last SPI but it has expired and they are editing again. Looking at the contribs it is clearly still PT.

As for the named account, Danny vs created Associated Students of the University of New Mexico, which was edited multiple times by PT pre-block [42] [43]. Apart from the known sock, Danny vs is the only substantial editor of this article (whose extraordinarily detailed coverage of a borderline-notable student government organization, complete with logo, tables, and election results, is highly reminiscent of PT's past contributions). This major edit to Española Valley High School is also strong evidence as PT is responsible for virtually all of the content in this article.

Since it has been only about a month since PT's last named account was blocked and since he frequently uses multiple accounts at the same time, I'm requesting CU to look for sleepers. Camerafiend ( talk) 16:00, 9 October 2013 (UTC) reply

Editor is new, yet hit the ground running in very familiar territory. Every single edit is to an article previously edited by a PT sock, except New Mexico gubernatorial election, 2014 which is fairly new but related to the Martinez article. Link after article is one example of a sock editing that article.

My guess is that there is another sockmaster we have been listing that was really PoliticianTexas, which CU might be able to clear up as well, to link cases. I know PT is stale itself, but I'm betting there are records around since he is a banned editor. Dennis Brown |   |  WER 03:08, 6 July 2014 (UTC) reply

  • Adding one more fact, PT edited politics, including [48] which is a different year but the same state as this current sock. He couldn't have edited the 14 due to time, so it is pretty much the same article but a different year. The current incarnation also edits politics, per contribs.  Clerk note: I'm not comfortable blocking based on behavior. If it weren't that I trusted Dennis's instincts, I wouldn't have spent so much time looking at the various diffs. One behavioral similarity I saw is that JDecker1 summarized an edit as small here when it obviously wasn't, as did another puppet here. However, the color thing isn't precisely the same and isn't very persuasive to me, and I noticed that one of the confirmed puppets added section "Student–school Improvement team" here that JDecker1 removed. This isn't a finding that JDecker1 is not a puppet, just that there isn't enough evidence to block.-- Bbb23 ( talk) 15:44, 2 August 2014 (UTC) reply

He couldn't have edited the 14 due to time, so it is pretty much the same article but a different year. The current incarnation also edits politics, per contribs. •  Additional information needed - I don't have any account to compare it with, so it comes down to a pure sleeper check. While the evidence presented can indicate sockpuppetry, it's not firm indication of it. I would like to see some evidence directly connecting to a previous sock. There are also other sockmasters laying around those articles like SMGeorge34 ( talk · contribs). -- DQ (ʞlɐʇ) 03:15, 6 July 2014 (UTC) reply
  • Give me a day, I've been trying to get to bed for two hours. I have a feeling that one of these other masters may in fact be PT and just wasn't linked back, thus became a new "master". Normally, I wouldn't sweat that, it happens, but PT is banned, not just blocked, so it matters to try to link it properly. I still bet that there is an IP to be found for PT on a Post It note somewhere back in the CU sooper sekrit cave. Dennis Brown |   |  WER 03:22, 6 July 2014 (UTC) reply
  • Added more above, changed status back to CU request, DeltaQuad. Dennis Brown |   |  WER 14:16, 13 July 2014 (UTC) reply
  • Based on *limited* previous CU data, Red X Unrelated unless he's moved. Behavoir will be your deciding factor. -- DQ (ʞlɐʇ) 03:32, 20 July 2014 (UTC) reply
