Suspected sockpuppets

Both Uayoa and Uioya have been active recently and have created articles with several problem, bogus info based on their incorrect deductions ( WP:V/ WP:OR) and creating articles based only on patents ( WP:N issue). The editor(s) are generally uncommunicative, just blanking their user page(s) or just not replying. This is a very obscure topic area (machine guns or other fully automatic weapons using revolver-style mechanisms), so it's hard to imagine several editors all making the same mistakes and behaving the same way, besides their user name similarity.

User:Wnwak, who was active in the same area, was blocked with a check-user in February, but I don't know who else he matched. The last two (Vjvjfjnbhvnvfnfv and Skrunyak) are older, abandoned accounts which focused on the same area. I'm mentioning them here because they might ring a bell. Someone not using his real name ( talk) 18:19, 28 June 2013 (UTC) reply

Yadayadayaday edited guns too, but not exactly in the same area as these two. He did edit in the (also pretty obscure area) of Argentinian firearms, same as Uayoa. Someone not using his real name ( talk) 18:46, 28 June 2013 (UTC) reply
O9jmi8nh7ub6y made only fews edits, but they match the interest are of the higher-volume accounts. If this is someone socking (as opposed to friends, etc.), they've been doing it for a long time. Someone not using his real name ( talk) 18:52, 28 June 2013 (UTC) reply

Also, I don't remember when Nhjutyr created Kovonalov machine gun (recently deleted, so I can't see), but if it was another recently active account, it should probably be checked too. Someone not using his real name ( talk) 18:46, 28 June 2013 (UTC) reply

Finally, User:Obhuv and User:Dmtrx might also be the same person, although the connection here is only that they have created articles for not-so-notable automatic weapons. Someone not using his real name ( talk) 19:10, 28 June 2013 (UTC) reply

Same goes for Wukkawakka. Someone not using his real name ( talk) 19:37, 28 June 2013 (UTC) reply

Re diffs: Well, diffs for all would be a lot of work, and I have to go to bed soon. Basically check the new articles these accounts have created, e.g. Uioya Uayoa. Skrunyak, Vjvjfjnbhvnvfnfv, and then Uoayo came to edit Union Automatic Revolver, which has very few edits overall; here they incorrectly added the info the gun was of "French origin". At Storle machine gun, Uayoa added [1] the incorrect info that the gun was of "Swedish origin". (In both these cases the info added was incorrect; the designers being natural-born US citizens and residing in the US as shown in the patents, despite their non-English names.) Another commonality is that many of the stubs created from patents alone have made-up/unverifiable caliber and rate of fire, because the patents do not have this info, and the guns were not produced. It's too much work to even tag all of those issues with citation needed. The easiest example for someone to check is probably [2]; you only have to read a one-page patent to find out that info on the caliber added to Wikipedia is not in the patent. Someone not using his real name ( talk) 21:10, 28 June 2013 (UTC) reply

Similarly an basically off-topic section in Automatic revolver (section which is really about revoler-style machine guns) was added in succession by Skrunyak, Vjvjfjnbhvnvfnfv (restored material initially added by Skrunyak), Wnwak (did the same and was blocked, but not reverted) and then Uoayo came by. There are accuracy problems with the claims in that section (besides being placed in an barely related article), e.g. ShKAS is not a revolver weapon per se; although it has a revolving feeding cage it has a single chamber. I won't go into more details here; I'll fix the article eventually. I have to go off-line now. If you need more details, I'll provide them tomorrow. Someone not using his real name ( talk) 20:32, 28 June 2013 (UTC) reply

I've added Sdafhgh and Ose\fio. Old, inactive accounts, but their contributions need peer review; several have been sent to AfD. Their creations also contain probably-made-up/unverifiable numbers in the infoboxes. Someone not using his real name ( talk) 12:58, 30 June 2013 (UTC) reply

I should note here, before that article is deleted, that 2B-A-40 was created by Sdafhgh then updated by Skrunyak and Vjvjfjnbhvnvfnfv. Someone not using his real name ( talk) 13:02, 30 June 2013 (UTC) reply
As for Ose\fio, he created Springfield Armory SALVO, again based only on patents; the article was recently updated by Uioya. Someone not using his real name ( talk) 13:08, 30 June 2013 (UTC) reply
Both Ose\fio and Sdafhgh added rather misleading information about Project SALVO to Special Purpose Individual Weapon; partially corrected by me now, at least with respect to the conclusion of that project. Skrunyak also made one edit to that page. Someone not using his real name ( talk) 13:26, 30 June 2013 (UTC) reply

I recently sent a series of these articles - prototype rifles, mostly Soviet - to AfD or dealt with them in other ways:

Since about half of these have been deleted and most of the rest are going down the same route, I'd have to rely on the clerk to compare the formats and sources used of these articles - I can't provide diffs for all of them. Most are more or less the same, IIRC. Of this bunch, especially telling is Sdafhgh making 2B-A-40 and then Ose\fio making 2B-A-30, and I think them looking the same. Thanks, Ansh 666 18:06, 30 June 2013 (UTC) reply

There's also a list at Talk:List of Russian weaponry#Left-outs, which likely contains more of these. Ansh 666 18:14, 30 June 2013 (UTC) reply

Using the Editor Interaction Analyzer: First one shows no interaction for all except Vjvjfjnbhvnvfnfv, Skrunyak, and Yadayadayaday. Since Nhjutyr has no edits and the rest have very few since articles have been deleted, I replaced that one and Uoayo with the last two: here: the two added accounts have edited the same articles a lot, as well. I doubt this is any sort of conclusive evidence, but it helps to see. Ansh 666 20:48, 30 June 2013 (UTC) reply
I also noted from Vjvjfjnbhvnvfnfv and Skrunyak's talk pages that they have a propensity for calling automatic weapons "Machine" whatevers (revolvers, shotguns, etc), even though the terms don't exist in any formal way. I don't know about the others, but I'd say that's pretty idiosyncratic. Ansh 666 20:50, 30 June 2013 (UTC) reply

It's certainly uncanny. However looking at it I feel that if you could provide diffs that would justify checkuser, checkuser might provide some useful insight. There are a lot of accounts, and establishing the linkage with explicit diffs would definitely help resolve this case. NativeForeigner Talk 19:53, 28 June 2013 (UTC) reply

Ansh666, please don't do this. These accounts are already blocked or too old to block. I just added them to the list to know which articles to investigate for dubious content. See contributions for evidence - similar interest in combat gear, obscure firearms and cartridges, and made-up firearms classifications. This edit regarding a weapons patent (also a previous area of contention) is particularly indicative, as are the "sources" added here.

I created the Heavy submachine gun page from info added to Submachine gun page by User:OiBlud that was outside the scope of the SMG article. At the time, I thought is was a reasonable compromise. Otherwise, I would have simply deleted the info outright. I agree with Ansh...There is no such classification as Heavy submachine gun and the weapons described within said article are simply referred to as machine guns. And, from what I've seen, there are similarities between OiBlud and Ctway edit histories.-- RAF910 ( talk) 15:50, 3 June 2014 (UTC) reply

  • Based solely on geolocation it's  Possible that OiBlud is a Ctway sock. Given that all the confirmed socks in previous reports are  Stale, a behavioral match will be needed to be certain. The overlap in editing style and topics is striking, so much so that I would support a block based on WP:DUCK.-- Jezebel'sPonyo bons mots 22:57, 3 June 2014 (UTC) reply

This user was brought to my attention by User:RAF910, who has also had experience dealing with this sockmaster. This new user has shown the same obsession with obscure firearms and other military equipment (though with some new branching out into British pop culture, as would be more expected of someone with that username (if you don't understand why I would say that, LDN stands for London). They've created multiple articles this time around as well; though they aren't as problematic as the previous iterations, they share some naming conventions and characteristics, especially the large amount of dubious or unreliable sources:

Also, sorry if I'm missing something or the report is incomplete, I'm physically sick and very tired right now. Ansh 666 05:31, 2 August 2014 (UTC) reply

  • This sockpuppet is obsessed with adding the SerLea submachine gun to wiki. He even added it to my user page on 12 December 2013 only to remove it minutes laters. I can only assume that he did this as a way to save the information, so that he can restore it later. And, he has already done so, as said article is currently being deleted again...see Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Firearms. The info is virtually identical to what he added to my user page in December.-- RAF910 ( talk) 04:41, 3 August 2014 (UTC) reply

These were brought to my attention by User:Rezin and User:RAF910 on my talk page.

There are major editing overlaps and style similarities in the edits of User:Everybodyswillyisaspeedboat and previous socks, including List of multiple barrel firearms and Synchronization gear, among other articles. The timing is also consistent, with the new account being created roughly a month after the previous block. The CU is for this account only.

The other four are all very stale (last edits 2-3 years ago), but connected by VBR Belgium and related pages (now at AfD). User:Ose\fio has been mentioned in previous reports, but was too stale for CU and slipped through the cracks. User:Xmkcojnisef I don't know about, with only 12 edits, but all are to VBR Belgium-related pages and seem stylistically similar to previous socks. User:Chenfehuang is possible, but I don't see evidence of false information and use of similar sources - most of their edits seem constructive and benign. I doubt User:Armorpiercer is related; their edits make it seem that they're more likely a COI editor related to in some way or paid by VBR Belgium to push their product on WP. Again, these four are stale, so will have to be evaluated on behavior alone. ansh 666 23:02, 12 November 2014 (UTC) reply

Ansh666, thanks for taking the time to file this. I'd included User:Chenfehuang because, like User:Everybodyswillyisaspeedboat, he was using copies of Google translations [4] and because of the overlap in articles. You're probably right about User:Armorpiercer being unrelated - that user seems only interested in the one topic while Ctway has more eclectic interests. Rezin ( talk) 23:26, 12 November 2014 (UTC) reply
Oh, hmm, maybe you're right about that. I didn't see the second major edit to that page, which added the infobox and stuff. ansh 666 23:44, 12 November 2014 (UTC) reply
Not to be overly suspicious, but user:AFCLystad and user:Clystad78 share with some of the previous accounts an interest in List of firearms, etc. Rezin ( talk) 17:59, 13 November 2014 (UTC) reply
Added them to the report, though I'm not sure. Judging from the timing of creation/edits, it seems like whoever created those accounts forgot the password or otherwise lost access to User:Clystad78, and made User:AFCLystad to continue - they are almost certainly the same person. ansh 666 21:13, 13 November 2014 (UTC) reply
Actually, @ Ponyo: I assume that since you didn't mention these two, you didn't see them in the check? They were brought up before but I didn't add them until just now right after you posted results. ansh 666 21:15, 13 November 2014 (UTC) reply

Jetwave Dave

Last year, user:Someone not using his real name suggested that Ctway may be the same sockmaster as Jetwave Dave ( talk · contribs). Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Jetwave Dave There are several behavioral clues which suggest that's true. Those accounts are all too stale to check. But so many of his contributions are copyright violations that maybe there wholesale review. At least one of the accounts has already been the subject of a copyright investigation: Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Ose\fio. Same general interests, including obscure firearms and other military topics (boots, motorbikes, training systems), as well as English/Commonwealth topics, many of which were created/extensively edited by previous socks; also same editing style (e.g. large amounts of extremely detailed but unsourced material like this and this with a rather unencyclopedic tone). I'm in the middle of about a billion AfDs of articles created by this guy, so feel free to ask for more evidence if you feel I didn't provide enough. ansh 666 07:56, 10 February 2016 (UTC) reply

Didn't notice it was stale, sorry. The timing is about right, though; the previous sock was blocked in November 2014 and this one was created in December 2014 (sorry I wasn't able to catch it earlier). For behavioral evidence: first, none of the socks have ever used edit summaries. They also have a history of storing links for later use on their user page:
Major overlap with previous socks on articles - for example Blowback (firearms):
Note how these edits all heavily link to either articles on obscure firearms created by themselves or other socks, images, patents (which this guy is known to use extensively to create articles), and usually unreliable often Russian gun enthusiast websites (even for non-Russian firearms, though that is a significant portion of their additions). They also often add large chunks of text which are either uncited or using these unreliable sources. This behavior is continued on other articles:
Finally, let's have a look at an article he's created, Garand Model 1919:
  • No inline citations.
  • Super-detailed information not found in any of the sources.
  • One source includes a patent (which is a red flag), the other is an unreliable gun-enthusiast site.
Unfortunately, the socks with the largest contribution pools were abandoned and stale by the time this guy was discovered, hence their marking as "stale/unconfirmed". However, they're still pretty obviously the same guy. Hope this helps, ansh 666 02:18, 11 February 2016 (UTC) reply

  • All previous account are  Stale, so there is nothing to compare.  Check declined by a checkuser. In order to facilitate and expedite your request, please provide diffs to support your case. Please give two or more diffs meeting the following format:
  1. At least one diff is from the sockmaster (or an account already blocked as a confirmed sockpuppet of the sockmaster), showing the behaviour characteristic of the sockmaster.
  2. At least one diff per suspected sockpuppet, showing the suspected sockpuppet emulating the behaviour of the sockmaster given in the first diff.
  3. In situations where it is not immediately obvious from the diffs what the characteristic behaviour is, a short explanation must be provided. Around one sentence is enough for this. Vanjagenije (talk) 10:50, 10 February 2016 (UTC) reply

Same general area of interest (obscure firearms, often multi-barreled, along with other general military matters), plus the use of blogs, images, videos, and patents as references (see for the best example AO-63 assault rifle, which may be a repost?). Plus the timing is right - created one month after the CU block of the last sock, Kinkirankinkirankirunkurankink ( talk · contribs). ansh 666 18:20, 22 August 2017 (UTC) reply

  • I may be able to help a bit. Because I had previously made some substantial hardblocks to slow down Ctway, there is still some technical info to go on despite the socks in the archive being stale. What I can say is that 1994thegoodolddays is editing from the same ISP and city. This may be helpful if the behviour is a match.-- Jezebel's Ponyo bons mots 18:05, 10 February 2016 (UTC) reply
  • In addition to the wealth of evidence Ansh666 has provided above, I did a bit of behavioural digging and comparing on my own and believe the behavioural evidence, combined with the residual technical evidence, makes it very likely this is a sock of Ctway. I've blocked and tagged the account accordingly.-- Jezebel's Ponyo bons mots 17:43, 11 February 2016 (UTC) reply

Suspected sockpuppets

Same general area of interest (obscure firearms, often multi-barreled, along with other general military matters), plus the use of blogs, images, videos, and patents as references (see for the best example AO-63 assault rifle, which may be a repost?). Plus the timing is right - created one month after the CU block of the last sock, Kinkirankinkirankirunkurankink ( talk · contribs). ansh 666 18:20, 22 August 2017 (UTC) reply
