July 6 Information
I have a question about the movie Transamerica: are the main characters Bree and Toby bisexual? I mean bREE had a girlfriend when was a man, and she when become a woman she seemed interested in a guy the movie. And Toby, Bree's son sleeps with a man in the movie (Though he is a prostitute.). - Ah, the spacing made it seem like it was a reply to what I said. :p Also the somewhat ambiguous use of they made it seem like it was the categories of sex and gender rather than the characters. So is they dabble in a bit of this and that? When someone is transsexual how do you refer to their sexual preferences? Seems like that would be a complicated matter as you are either someone who was originally a physiological male and are now physically female with female gender roles, or the less common (afaik) female to male where it's the reverse. :p Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie | Say Shalom! 08:14, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

- I know this is off the OP's question but I can't let your statement go unchallenged: what do you say to those born XXY or XYY, or true hermaphrodites? - I glanced at it and saw what I needed to know, and can ask you whether you took a course on this subject matter as I did when we dealt with
hijras where we talked about the real differences between sex and gender. :p True hermaphrodites are male, though they are usually raised as girls and have many female phenotypes. I don't remember how it functions for XXY, but XYY is still male basically. As you said though, this is all off the OP's topic. None of the people in this story are born with extra chromosomes afawk and so the rules that apply for people with such chromosomal traits do not apply here. So I'll ask again, who was born a boy and who a girl? :p

- Actually yes I have taken courses in "gender dysfunction" as it was then (back in the 80s). I also have several transgender friends. You didn't glance far enough at the article to see the table which lists all the intersex conditions, then. True hermaphrodites actually have both male and female sexual organs - I've actually seen one such as I went to school with one. I'm sorry but you need to update your education on this. - He wasn't trying to piss of anyone; the lack of subtitles is often an artistic decision. One possible (this is purely my own speculation) is that directors will choose to forgo subtitles when they want the audience to form a more sympathetic bond with the main character; for example, if the main character doesn't speak Japanese, you get to experience what they are experiencing when other characters speak Japanese, that is a complete lack of understanding about what is going on. It isn't that the director is trying to "piss anyone off"; he wants you to be confused because he wants you to understand how the main character feels. Kill Bill is hardly the only movie that does this... -- Jayron 32 17:16, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

Merely because he was going for a specific artistic effect in Kill Bill doesn't mean he wasn't going for a different effect in Inglourious Basterds. - I find that it is often best to try not to figure out what the artist meant rather than having it be somewhat obvious when you think about it, or having it be explained by the artist themselves that that is what they meant (when that happens it usually means something is wrong with how they conveyed it). - Throughout "Kill Bill" information is withheld from the viewer. It's not just the Japanese, it's a theme through the whole double film. (Didn't they go so far as to bleep out The Bride's name?)
