Non-free cover art being used in The Dark Knight Returns, Frank Miller (comics creator)#Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and the late 1980s, Batman#The Dark Knight Returns, Modern Age of Comic Books#The rise of anti-heroes and American comic book#The Modern Age. File has a non-free use rationale for each, but only the one for the stand-alone article about comic book mini series itself seems to comply with WP:NFCC.
Use in "The Dark Knight Returns" seem appropriate for the reasons explained in WP:NFC#cite_note-2 because this is a stand-alone article about the work itself and the cover art is being used in the main infobox as the primary means of identifying this written work. Suggest keep for this article.
Use in the BLP about Frank Miller seems appropriate because per the aforementioned "cite note 2", the non-free use of cover art is typically not allowed in article about the work's author unless the cover art itself is the subject of sourced critical commentary because context required for such use by WP:NFCC#8 is lacking. Although there is a short sentence about the paper used for the comic and brief plot synopsis, there is really no need for the reader to see the cover art to understand any of what is written. Moreover, the "purpose" claimed by the non-free use rationale is "Illustration of the artist's work" which basically implies decorative use which not allowed per the NFCC. Finally, there is a wikilink to the work's stand alone article provided, so there's really no need for the image to be used again per WP:NFCC#3 for the reasons given in No. 6 of WP:NFC#UUI. Suggest remove from the the Frank Miller article.
Use in the Batman article also does not satisfy for the reasons given above. There is no sourced discussion of the cover art and it is not being used as the primary means of identification of the character at the top of the article, so the context required by NFCC#8 is lacking. There is no content in the article which requires the reader see this particular cover art to be understood and non-free use rationale's claim the the image is needed as an "Illustration of a specific point within the article" again implies decorative use. A wikilink to the stand-alone is provided, so readers can see the cover art there as explained by No. 6 NFC#UUI. Suggest remove from the character article.
"American comic book" and "Modern Age of Comic Books" are general articles about the subject of comic books. There is no specific sourced commentary about this particular cover art in either article, so the context required by NFCC#8 is lacking. Nothing in either article requires the reader see this particular cover art to be understood and the reader can see the cover art by clicking on the wikilink to the stand-alone article. The non-free rationales for these two uses claim the image is needed as an "Illustration of an example within the article" which once again implies decorative, not contextual, use. Keep this in the Batman article, obviously, since it does meet WP:NFCC#8, in that the whole point of that discussion is the dark tone set by that comic. The cover depicts that very tone, and this comic was instrumental in the character's development, as not only noted in the subsection about this comic but also in the lead of the Batman article. If you're going to overreach, as many of you are, then you should delete just about every comic book cover in other characters' articles. This is one of the few times where a picture of it is very appropriate. Remove it from Modern Age of Comic Books and American comic book since there's no reason for it to be in those articles. - The mention the "Batman" lead you are refering to says "Various creators worked to return the character to his dark roots, culminating in 1986 with The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller." and the mention later on in the "The Dark Knight Returns" section says "Frank Miller's limited series The Dark Knight Returns (February–June 1986) returned the character to his darker roots, both in atmosphere and tone." Why does the reader need to see this cover art to understand any of what is written? There are links to the stand-alone article where the reader can see the cover art and there is no specific discussion of the cover art itself anywhere in the article, so removing it will not be detrimental to the readers' understanding. seem more like WP:OTHERFILE and WP:DELETEALL arguments than showing how the use in the Batman article meets policy. - I stand corrected. You did go back a remove the nfur you added. My apologies for missing that. Although notifying others of this discussion is fine, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Comics#Cover of The Dark Knight Returns is a bit of canvassing as explained in WP:CANVASS#Campaigning, so I would try to be a little more neutral with any future notifications you post. Mireover, simply replacing one non-free cover art with another does not address the issue at hand. It's not necessarily that the file is being used too many times; it's how the file is being used. If all it takes to resolve this is to replace one cover art with another for illustrative purposes, then that kinda shows that this is decorative use. -- Marchjuly ( talk) 01:10, 27 August 2016 (UTC)

Non-free cover art being used in The Dark Knight Returns, Frank Miller (comics creator)#Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and the late 1980s, Batman#The Dark Knight Returns, Modern Age of Comic Books#The rise of anti-heroes and American comic book#The Modern Age. File has a non-free use rationale for each, but only the one for the stand-alone article about comic book mini series itself seems to comply with WP:NFCC.
Use in "The Dark Knight Returns" seem appropriate for the reasons explained in WP:NFC#cite_note-2 because this is a stand-alone article about the work itself and the cover art is being used in the main infobox as the primary means of identifying this written work. Suggest keep for this article.
Use in the BLP about Frank Miller seems appropriate because per the aforementioned "cite note 2", the non-free use of cover art is typically not allowed in article about the work's author unless the cover art itself is the subject of sourced critical commentary because context required for such use by WP:NFCC#8 is lacking. Although there is a short sentence about the paper used for the comic and brief plot synopsis, there is really no need for the reader to see the cover art to understand any of what is written. Moreover, the "purpose" claimed by the non-free use rationale is "Illustration of the artist's work" which basically implies decorative use which not allowed per the NFCC. Finally, there is a wikilink to the work's stand alone article provided, so there's really no need for the image to be used again per WP:NFCC#3 for the reasons given in No. 6 of WP:NFC#UUI. Suggest remove from the the Frank Miller article.
Use in the Batman article also does not satisfy for the reasons given above. There is no sourced discussion of the cover art and it is not being used as the primary means of identification of the character at the top of the article, so the context required by NFCC#8 is lacking. There is no content in the article which requires the reader see this particular cover art to be understood and non-free use rationale's claim the the image is needed as an "Illustration of a specific point within the article" again implies decorative use. A wikilink to the stand-alone is provided, so readers can see the cover art there as explained by No. 6 NFC#UUI. Suggest remove from the character article.
"American comic book" and "Modern Age of Comic Books" are general articles about the subject of comic books. There is no specific sourced commentary about this particular cover art in either article, so the context required by NFCC#8 is lacking. Nothing in either article requires the reader see this particular cover art to be understood and the reader can see the cover art by clicking on the wikilink to the stand-alone article. The non-free rationales for these two uses claim the image is needed as an "Illustration of an example within the article" which once again implies decorative, not contextual, use. Keep this in the Batman article, obviously, since it does meet WP:NFCC#8, in that the whole point of that discussion is the dark tone set by that comic. The cover depicts that very tone, and this comic was instrumental in the character's development, as not only noted in the subsection about this comic but also in the lead of the Batman article. If you're going to overreach, as many of you are, then you should delete just about every comic book cover in other characters' articles. This is one of the few times where a picture of it is very appropriate. Remove it from Modern Age of Comic Books and American comic book since there's no reason for it to be in those articles. - The mention the "Batman" lead you are refering to says "Various creators worked to return the character to his dark roots, culminating in 1986 with The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller." and the mention later on in the "The Dark Knight Returns" section says "Frank Miller's limited series The Dark Knight Returns (February–June 1986) returned the character to his darker roots, both in atmosphere and tone." Why does the reader need to see this cover art to understand any of what is written? There are links to the stand-alone article where the reader can see the cover art and there is no specific discussion of the cover art itself anywhere in the article, so removing it will not be detrimental to the readers' understanding. - I stand corrected. You did go back a remove the nfur you added. My apologies for missing that. Although notifying others of this discussion is fine, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Comics#Cover of The Dark Knight Returns is a bit of canvassing as explained in WP:CANVASS#Campaigning, so I would try to be a little more neutral with any future notifications you post. Mireover, simply replacing one non-free cover art with another does not address the issue at hand. It's not necessarily that the file is being used too many times; it's how the file is being used. If all it takes to resolve this is to replace one cover art with another for illustrative purposes, then that kinda shows that this is decorative use. -- Marchjuly ( talk) 01:10, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
