Just browsing through the
poetry article when I was struck by this picture of
Walt Whitman. I love the contrast and shadows and the detail on the beard. This is my first time to nominate a picture.

I'm working on a replacement based on a 33MB TIFF from the Library of Congress. The only problem is that the brightness/contrast are different on it, but this one will be guaranteed not to have any artifacts. In time.... :) BRIAN0918 22:07, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Support original photo. I like the kind of moody off white a lot more than the every day black and white of the adjusted one. I also think the unadjusted one looks sharper in the beard --

I've uploaded a third version, in a attempt to satisfy everybody. It's also full-size, which is probably overkill. —
