I referred the figures included in individual pages. Several figures are pretty questionable but there isnt a central database with land area figures for these things. gavre (al. PenangLion) ( talk) 14:50, 24 July 2023 (UTC) reply

Introduction

Hi! I'm SuperWIKI. Neighbour from Singapore here. I've been editing politics and military-related Wikipedia articles for a few years now, including those of Malaysia. However, my specific niche is the United States Congress (where I've been adding OGG audio files) and United States Armed Forces (where I track military nominations).

I cleaned up Anwar Ibrahim's infobox - moving incumbent party and MP positions to the the top, collapsing opposition and past parliamentary terms, and restoring the nested "Ministerial roles" list. I meant to do the same for Lim Kit Siang, removing all his DAP posts aside from Secretary-General to the s-start at the bottom, but formatting issues delayed this...

My computer's out of action at the moment, but anything infobox-related you need help, just let me know! SuperWIKI ( talk) 13:15, 29 November 2023 (UTC) reply

Rewriting of Penang

Adding on to the User talk:PenangLion/Penang sandbox, I'm just about done with rewriting Penang, aiming to push this article to GA status (George Town is next in my list too). Do let me know if there's more amendments or additions to be made towards making it more comprehensive. hundenvonPG ( talk) 02:01, 13 December 2023 (UTC) reply

I would highly suggest re-checking all references, making sure that its not composed of online articles (in the sense that its directly from websites, except news agencies); instead if there's any sources from official publications that can supplement the information, do add them. gavre (al. PenangLion) ( talk) 02:04, 13 December 2023 (UTC) reply
Furthermore, the sentence "The George Town Conurbation had a GDP worth US$13,596,418 in 2010, making it the second largest contributor of Malaysia's total GDP" does not make sense. Did you mean by US$13.596 billion? gavre (al. PenangLion) ( talk) 02:06, 13 December 2023 (UTC) reply
Ah thanks for pointing out the error. Will have a look on that and the referencing before requesting assessment. Some are rather dated, others just dead websites. hundenvonPG ( talk) 04:52, 13 December 2023 (UTC) reply

Looks great. Really going in-depth into its history there. Though I think the 'background' portion is too lengthy. Especially from the 1960s recession onwards to urban development where alot of chunks aren't about Komtar itself & can be further compressed. Those subsections are good, but probably more suited for articles like Wong Pow Nee & Lim Chong Eu (which look like a short drive-thru rather than a deep dive, by the way). Will have a deeper look later 😉 hundenvonPG ( talk) 10:24, 13 December 2023 (UTC) reply

Potentially disruptive editing by User: Malaysia Skyline

Hey PenangLion. I was just alerted to some user by the name of Malaysia Skyline who begun adding some unverified presentation slide into the Penang article. Looking through that user's history of edits, there appears to be a tendency for edit-warring and disruptive editing. I saw one of those disagreements involving you previously. Just wondering what are your thoughts on this? Thanks. hundenvonPG ( talk) 10:02, 25 December 2023 (UTC) reply

He has caused many headaches to Malaysian skyscraper-related and Penang-related articles.
I don't have any prejudice but several editors from Johore have tried to claim supremacy on statistics of Johor Bahru against George Town. There was an edit conflict on the main page on George Town involving the statement of "...being the second largest metropolitan area in Malaysia", where the Johorean editors tried to force an ambiguous statement or the claim that JB is the second largest metropolitan area.
Malaysian Skyline has significantly disrupted the list of skyscrapers in Malaysia by inserting copyrighted images and adding broken tables (not even mentioning, fake or unsourced statistics that are biased towards Johorean buildings).
I suspect that the account is a sockpuppet of a master-account, given that other unverified editors have made edits of similar styles. It's just that I don't have the time to check further on this. gavre (al. PenangLion) ( talk) 12:42, 25 December 2023 (UTC) reply
Rather persistent behaviour from them. For some reason, that sort of superiority complex is prevalent there (also speaking from personal experience, as I used to stay there).
Probably it's best to keep a close watch on anything Penang-related. I'm considering building a case, in case the next time that user or puppets display disruptive behaviour that affects the factual viability of Penang-related articles. Any more of that and it's straight to the admins. hundenvonPG ( talk) 14:01, 25 December 2023 (UTC) reply
I didn't read your edit conflicts with him earlier, and I wrote the comment based on your initial reply.
Oh god! Turns out he was editing the exact same thing as I wrote to you! They truly never change. gavre (al. PenangLion) ( talk) 14:12, 25 December 2023 (UTC) reply
No worries I'm more than certain that the current reference is rock solid. He was trying to replace it with some presentation slide that when I looked through, didn't state where the data was from. Not verifiable, solid grounds for reverting those edits.
Looks like the only way is to actually put a stop to such disruptive patterns. hundenvonPG ( talk) 14:21, 25 December 2023 (UTC) reply

About your edits to Komtar Bus Terminal article…

Hi! I saw your recent edits on the Komtar bus terminal article. I would like to firstly thank you for clearing up the mistakes made in the article as I do not have as much knowledge as you do, since I live in Singapore. However I wish to clarify some other points.

1st, I do understand that RapidPenang refers to this terminal as just “Komtar”. However I think that this would create some confusion with the main Komtar article for readers. Also, in SG we also sometimes refer to terminals as its main name, but it isn’t the full name. I prefer if the article simply be called “Komtar Bus Terminal” to make clear what it is.

2nd, the RapidPenang logo in the infobox can be bigger for readers to see the logo clearly.

As per this I will be editing the article to adjust to these two points. I hope you understand the reasons for these changes to your edits. Otherwise your edits will remain the same, so I wish to thank you again for fixing any mistakes I had made in the article. If you wish to clarify anything with me concerning this article please do message me in my talk page. Thank you once again! WyvrnLim ( talk) 10:35, 5 January 2024 (UTC) reply

When I started writing the main article for Komtar I had no intentions of splitting the section for the bus terminal with the main article due to how related they were. The only split that can occur in my opinion is with the main LRT station that will be built that is a station with the same name.
In honesty, naming conventions per Komtar (bus terminal) is more or less more accurate with Komtar bus terminal. But the terminal never had an official name so putting capitals like Komtar Bus Terminal is something I don't really agree with.
I used an alternative referencing format, which means you have to refit the references in the split article manually once more. I'll assist you on that if you need to. gavre (al. PenangLion) ( talk) 04:10, 6 January 2024 (UTC) reply

In regards to the post-nominal letters

Hello! I can understand the reason why you are removing the state post-nominals of the Malaysian leaders but the fact is fact. It is incorrect to only use the federal post-nominals anywhere. Honours are honours, state and federal honours are both equally important. For eg. someone has the Royal Family Order of the state or the highest grade of the non-royal states, but only the Officer/Member grade of any federal honour, in your logic, the lower federal honour will only be added. That makes no sense actually. Moreover you cite examples of QEII and Lee Kuan Yew. I must remind. QEII is a monarch uses Infobox royalty, same as Malay rulers and no post-nominals are added on that infobox. For Lee Kuan Yew, he has no Singaporean honour and again if he has, Singapore is not a federal state like Malaysia and does not have so many honours as Malaysia does. The Prime Ministers (and everyone else) have received the highest honours of the land and it seems discriminatory to only include the federal honours and not the state honours. Moreover, within the states, the state honours (Royal Family orders) are ranked higher than SMN and SSM and sometimes to DMN too. If the post-nominals are taking too much space of the infobox, let it take. It does not look bad. It is infact good. Hope you understand. Oritsu.me ( talk) 16:35, 25 February 2024 (UTC) reply

I'm sorry to say, I have to completely disagree with you in several aspects. It looks really bad from my perspective (especially for phone users). The order of honorary titles were not added because of importance, but instead it was caused by some editor with the bright idea to include the full list (even foreign honours of other countries, weirdly enough) which seemed to be wholly unnecessary (three or four lines of honours as demonstrated by Mahathir's or Tunku's articles do not make sense, they are not Xerxes with his eight titles), which is part of a wider, problematic editing style in Malaysian Wikipedia which emphasises overinclusion or repeated inclusions of overly-intricate information.
Moreover, the prefixes for these figures (Dato', Dato' Seri, Datuk, Tun, Tunku) corresponded to the federal or state suffixes, if we are supposed to add state suffixes for these figures, should we add the entire list of prefixes for then as well?
In terms of precedence, mind my inexperience in this field, but as a Malaysian who's dabbled on researching politics, I've never really heard of state titles being more important than federal titles in general. The opinion, in what I've seen from the press (and admittedly, public sentiment, which points out the uselessness of these titles), is that federal titles are the only true gauge at the importance of that certain figure. My own exception under this rule would be if the figure does not have a federal title, but even under that condition, I am still hesitant on it being something that could be added after all.
I would rather add a direct link at the line which expands the suffixes rather than showing the entire list outright. I do not accept suffixes with more than one line. I'm really sorry, admittedly I dislike the entire writing prose and formatting of almost all Malaysian articles and I legitimately disagree at this kind of overinclusion (IMO). gavre (al. PenangLion) ( talk) 17:38, 25 February 2024 (UTC) reply
...Which is why we are essentially replacing the old articles and attempting to rewrite them in an updated prose similar to GA political articles, but it will take some time before we finish it. I hope you can understand. gavre (al. PenangLion) ( talk) 17:56, 25 February 2024 (UTC) reply

About a Penang-wide Wikiproject

So here are some takeaways. The feedback I'm getting:

  • Ensuring content are up-to-date and page patrol could be major issues.
  • Translating English into Malay/other languages to be considered too.

It was more of an impromptu hangout, but I hope that's a start. Also I think standardising guidelines for Penang articles, i.e. language scripts to be used, infobox parameters, etc, are just as important to be worked out. Already there has been some dispute over Jawi for Penang articles. hundenvonPG ( talk) 14:40, 4 March 2024 (UTC) reply

Need some opinions

Hey PenangLion. There's this User:Kelisi who has been adding a raw OSM map into the Penang#Geography section. Up to yesterday, it & several photos were causing MOS:SANDWICH, so I removed them to reduce the clutter. He has since re-added the map, and while the sandwiching effect isn't as bad now, it still appears repetitive to the pushpin map already present (IMO, the raw map he's putting doesn't add anything more to the article; there wasn't any info unlike the pushpin map). What do you think of this? hundenvonPG ( talk) 10:05, 16 March 2024 (UTC) reply

I dont really mind, to be honest. gavre (al. PenangLion) ( talk) 11:00, 16 March 2024 (UTC) reply
It's not a "raw" map, Hunden. Look again. I have added plenty of details to it. OSM is a bit annoying because it won't include local placenames unless you zoom in very close, and the type that it uses for bodies of water is barely readable (when bodies of water are named at all). I have enhanced that map considerably, to the point where it is far and away the most detailed one in the article, certainly more detailed than the pushpin map. It deserves a place in the article. On the table for LRT stations

Hey PenangLion. Just some thoughts on the table in Mutiara line:

  • Would it be better to leave the station names unlinked for the time being? Presumably articles for each station would've to be created moving forward (similar to other urban rail content in Malaysia & Singapore), and it would be best to link to each station's article instead.
  • Localities to be based on the actual mukims the station is at, e.g. Jelutong, Gelugor, Paya Terubong (Mukim 13), Bayan Lepas (Mukim 12), Teluk Kumbar (Mukim 11), for more consistency. Granted, some stations straddle mukim boundaries (it would depend on the station being built on which side of the border), but it's possible to roughly group stations on which mukims they serve.
  • Silicon Island would come under George Town (MBPP)'s jurisdiction ( Pulau Rimau at about the same latitude is also within city limits), thus the rows under Silicon Island should be merged under the George Town heading to reflect that.

hundenvonPG ( talk) 00:17, 4 April 2024 (UTC) reply

It's not a precise table, more of an approximation, so localities aren't geographically bound to the mukims. You could even change it to a "suburb". Links towards stations can be changed later, it doesn't really matter.
I separated Silicon Island in this case to distinguish the special "provisional stations" they had been labelling after.
But I just don't like the altered layout, so I modelled it after the New York subway's tables. gavre (al. PenangLion) ( talk) 01:54, 4 April 2024 (UTC) reply
I see. Thanks too for pointing out on the Silicon Island portion. hundenvonPG ( talk) 03:36, 4 April 2024 (UTC) reply
