Mike- thanks for contributing to the Ernest Emerson pages and making corrections/adding additional info. I am a fan of his stuff. It seems like some people think there should be more sources and references, and I am having a hard time finding them from "legitimate" sources. Most are in advertisements, but I have put links to most of the articles I have found (online).I konw there is a lot of hype associated with them, so it is seen as difficult to divide facts from hype. After re-reading your comments @ Stider Knives Talk Page, and meditating on the subject, I have to agree that my comments do not have anything to add to the Strider Knives page. I agree with you that even if it is on the talk page, it truly does not contribute to the article. I might have been under the wrong impression about what wikipedia was all about.

It's quite a decent article. I'd say it's too short, actually, but that may be more due to the fact that the knife is fairly new and there isn't much to say about it yet; hopefully there will be more information that can be included once it has a longer service history. When the talk page gets really long there will be a message at the top that advises you to archive when you try to edit it. There are several ways to do it - outlined in Wikipedia:How to archive a talk page but frankly I would just try to copy an example such as Aikido where one just uses cut and paste. That's all I can do for now - gotta go. More feedback tomorrow on your refs (problem with consistency vis-a-vis news sources - if you have time, have a look at WP:CITET, to understand the difference in formatting between web sources, book sources, and in particular, news sources - more on that tomorrow). Also, lots of confusion over capitalization of proper vs. common nouns. Not sure which of those knives have companies or company names, and what should be capitalized, so be sure to review WP:MSH. Also, you may want to leave a message for Jkelly ( talk · contribs) asking him to look at your images in terms of Fair Use - an area I don't understand well, but which needs to be reviewed. I started doing the refs by hand but then found the templates, I'll go through and have them all in the Harvard style for ease and uniformity. The knife names which are capitalized are Trademarked names. Names of individual models, I guess would be a better term...like Chevrolet Corvette, Ford Mustang, Emerson Comander, Emerson CQC7, Viper Knives, that was my reasoning. Specwar and Viper were also 2 names of Emerson's company.-- Mike Searson 19:27, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
- The only other inconsistency I found was on the dates, because the cite templates seem to use them inconsistently - just make sure they all use the same format style, which ever you pick. I read on Sandy's talk page that you need help with spell checking. If you download the latest version of Mozilla Firefox, there's an automatic spell checker that works on any text you enter while on the net. If you're speaking of the Emerson article, take a look. Most of the knives are not big at all. In fact aside from a handful of models, they are pocketknives. RC Hardness is 56-59 and steel is ATS-34 or 154 CM. Read the article and see what you think. -- Mike Searson 20:36, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

No problem. The {{DEFAULTSORT:}} feature (as far as I can tell) just went live last month. I figure that the FA candidates need all the help possible, so I'm working on adding the {{DEFAULTSORT:}} tag on all of the biographical FACs. It also gives me an excuse to read through them — albeit quickly — and do some quick copyediting. I'll have a closer look at Ernest Emerson tomorrow and give you my feedback at the FAC page.

I don't have access to a lot of the literature so its been a problem. I have a dislike of ADS and also their follow on Secrets of the Samurai. I've given the reasons over the years but it always boils down to two shodans going to Japan for 6 months and talking to a limited number of people (those that could talk English and would talk to them) and going home to write a book. Illustrations are ok but ... well each his own. Secrets of the samurai is even worse with regards to research. Peter Rehse 04:37, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
It works that way sometimes - what I know of Aikido is just sooo different from what they describe. In my case it was a fictionalized account of Musashi's life by Eiji Yoshikawa that helped me make sense of a lot that was happening. You should promote Ernest Emerson to A Class
Hi Mike, I was just browsing the martial arts articles by class, and noticed this. According to the assessment guidelines, a GA article undergoing FA review should be promoted to A Class. Thought you might be interested, although it's probably moot; I checked out the article and I can't imagine it will have any problem making FA class. It's quite a decent article. I'd say it's too short, actually, but that may be more due to the fact that the knife is fairly new and there isn't much to say about it yet; hopefully there will be more information that can be included once it has a longer service history. Oh, why isn't that in the article as "Uses", and what would a women do with a switchblade, I think it would be self-defence, get the dirt out of the underneath of their nails? When the talk page gets really long there will be a message at the top that advises you to archive when you try to edit it. There are several ways to do it - outlined in Wikipedia:How to archive a talk page but frankly I would just try to copy an example such as Aikido where one just uses cut and paste. That's all I can do for now - gotta go. More feedback tomorrow on your refs (problem with consistency vis-a-vis news sources - if you have time, have a look at WP:CITET, to understand the difference in formatting between web sources, book sources, and in particular, news sources - more on that tomorrow). Also, lots of confusion over capitalization of proper vs. common nouns. Not sure which of those knives have companies or company names, and what should be capitalized, so be sure to review WP:MSH. Also, you may want to leave a message for Jkelly ( talk · contribs) asking him to look at your images in terms of Fair Use - an area I don't understand well, but which needs to be reviewed. I started doing the refs by hand but then found the templates, I'll go through and have them all in the Harvard style for ease and uniformity. The knife names which are capitalized are Trademarked names. Names of individual models, I guess would be a better term...like Chevrolet Corvette, Ford Mustang, Emerson Comander, Emerson CQC7, Viper Knives, that was my reasoning. Specwar and Viper were also 2 names of Emerson's company.-- Mike Searson 19:27, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
- The only other inconsistency I found was on the dates, because the cite templates seem to use them inconsistently - just make sure they all use the same format style, which ever you pick. If they are persisting, and it is obvious vandalism, you can relist them on WP:AIV, if if it not blatant vandalism, but disruptive nonetheless, you can list on WP:AN/I (the admin incident noticebaord). I read on Sandy's talk page that you need help with spell checking. If you download the latest version of Mozilla Firefox, there's an automatic spell checker that works on any text you enter while on the net. If you're speaking of the Emerson article, take a look. Most of the knives are not big at all. In fact aside from a handful of models, they are pocketknives. RC Hardness is 56-59 and steel is ATS-34 or 154 CM. Read the article and see what you think. -- Mike Searson 20:36, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Re: Ernest Emerson
No problem. The {{DEFAULTSORT:}} feature (as far as I can tell) just went live last month. I figure that the FA candidates need all the help possible, so I'm working on adding the {{DEFAULTSORT:}} tag on all of the biographical FACs. It also gives me an excuse to read through them — albeit quickly — and do some quick copyediting. I'll have a closer look at Ernest Emerson tomorrow and give you my feedback at the FAC page.

I don't have access to a lot of the literature so its been a problem. I have a dislike of ADS and also their follow on Secrets of the Samurai. I've given the reasons over the years but it always boils down to two shodans going to Japan for 6 months and talking to a limited number of people (those that could talk English and would talk to them) and going home to write a book. Illustrations are ok but ... well each his own. Secrets of the samurai is even worse with regards to research. Peter Rehse 04:37, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
It works that way sometimes - what I know of Aikido is just sooo different from what they describe. In my case it was a fictionalized account of Musashi's life by Eiji Yoshikawa that helped me make sense of a lot that was happening. You should promote Ernest Emerson to A Class
Hi Mike, I was just browsing the martial arts articles by class, and noticed this. According to the assessment guidelines, a GA article undergoing FA review should be promoted to A Class. Thought you might be interested, although it's probably moot; I checked out the article and I can't imagine it will have any problem making FA class. Possible renaming of Wikipedia:WikiProject Saints
