Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended or used for publicity and/or promotional purposes. Please read the following carefully.

Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, celebrity or other well-known individual, or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements, and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not. See WP:FAQ/Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, or organization. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

What can I do now?

You are still welcome to write about something other than your company or organization. If you do intend to make useful contributions on some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{ unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, please see how to appeal a block. Beeblebrox ( talk) 19:39, 29 May 2011 (UTC) reply

It's easy to misunderstand what Wikipedia is, and I do understand how a marketing person might not be familiar with the conflict of interest guidelines and think it would be helpful to add information about his or her clients. In general, what I'd do about that is verify that the person understands the guidelines now, and really does want to contribute to the encyclopedia in other areas. In this case, though, you say that your edits are totally unrelated to your work, when in fact, that isn't true. In addition to that, even though you read the message above, you haven't really addressed wither you understand the rules now, or have a plan to follow them in the future. It isn't possible for me to unblock you when there's a concern that I'd just have to immediately re-block your new username. FisherQueen ( talk · contribs) 21:51, 29 May 2011 (UTC) reply

I by mistake used a username that makes you think I am contributing for the benefit of my company. This is not the case. Lakes Marketing provides hotels with CRM systems and web videos. I am not mentioning any of my clients or intend to. I understand the rules of Wiki and that information contributed has to be factual, from a 3rd party perspective and not be commercial in any way. All I have done so far is update a few things I know about regarding a TV show presented by Rory McGrath, which is missing from his wiki page, and update some facts about released music projects which are missing on other pages. I thought this was the point of wikipedia, to be a growing body of factual and accurate knowledge. I'm sorry that I used a username of LakesMarketing which seems to have got caught in your spam filter, which I now see was a stupid thing to do. I didn't realise this was going to happen, I am new to contributing on wiki. Please could you change the user name or delete the lakes marketing user and I shall create a new user and start again.

Accept reason:

Ok this is starting to get silly. I had no idea how un-user friendly wiki is ... I'm only trying my best and here you are threatening to reblock me. FYI - I am already blocked and am requesting a change of username as I made a mistake using my business as a username. Please read above my explanation. Please could you either grant the new username or delete the LakesMarketing user ... AND I WILL START AGAIN! Lakesmarketing ( talk) 10:40, 30 May 2011 (UTC) reply
You could hardly blame me for thinking that an account called "Lakes Marketing" making an edit promoting a television show called "The Lakes" [1] was deliberate advertising. In point of fact the website for Lakes Marketing [2] clearly states that it is a promotion and marketing firm specializing in online marketing based in the very same lake district this show was filmed in, and your first edit mentions a luxury hotel in the region. It would be pretty remarkable coincidence for you to have innocently chosen the name of another company by the exact same name and made an edit related to the exact same place as your first edit. I try to assume good faith whenever possible but your explanation of these circumstances is a bit too full of coincidences to be taken at face value. It's only natural to be a bit embarrassed at having made such a ham-handed attempt at guerilla marketing when working for "online marketing experts" but this obfuscation is not the way to resolve these issues. Beeblebrox ( talk) 15:35, 30 May 2011 (UTC) reply
Everything I have contributed is factual. Check out the reference if you have too. There are coincidences in what I have done so far because I live, work and play in the English Lake District. And naturally things I know about are related to where I live and work. If you don't want more accurate listings to Rory McGrath's career with details of some of the main characters then that is fine. But please don't assume guerilla marketing was my intent ... your guys have an over active imagination, maybe spending to much time at the computer! ;o) All I am trying to do is contribute to wiki as I use it all the time. Sorry I even bothered! So if your not willinging to change my username please feel free to delete it and all of my contributions so far. Lakesmarketing ( talk) 15:59, 30 May 2011 (UTC) reply
The accuracy, or lack thereof (whichever is the case), isn't the issue. The issue is that you have a conflict of interest in these matters because your company, and thus you, have a direct relation with these subjects. This does call into question the veracity of what you do post, and significantly increases the risk of an inherent bias in what you write about these subjects. You are welcome to contribute here, we just ask that you avoid areas related to your company. Perhaps there's a hobby you are interested in, or something you studied that you know a bit about? Failing that, there are lots of pages that need general cleanup work, which is a good way to get you acquainted with how Wikipedia works as well.
Due to copyright and technical reasons, we have no way to delete your account, so it's here to stay. However, if you are willing to avoid these areas and work elsewhere, we can see about changing your username to "nicot123" (which is available) and getting you on your way. Sound like a plan? :-)
@ Salvio: Calm down there a bit, ok? Removing old unblock requests isn't a huge deal, that's why we have a history log. (However, Lakes, if you could stop removing the old requests, we really would appreciate it). Hersfold ( t/ a/ c) 20:50, 30 May 2011 (UTC) reply

After your block is lifted, you're welcome to remove this stuff from your talk page so you don't have to look at it any more.
