Guideline and policy news

• The Universal Code of Conduct enforcement guidelines have been published for consideration. Voting to ratify this guideline is planned to take place 7 March to 21 March. Comments can be made on the talk page.

Technical news

• The user group oversight will be renamed suppress in around 3 weeks. This will not affect the name shown to users and is simply a change in the technical name of the user group. The change is being made for technical reasons. You can comment in Phabricator if you have objections.
• The Reply Tool feature, which is a part of Discussion Tools, will be opt-out for everyone logged in or logged out starting 7 February 2022. Editors wishing to comment on this can do so in the relevant Village Pump discussion.

Arbitration

• Community input is requested on several motions aimed at addressing discretionary sanctions that are no longer needed or overly broad.
• The Arbitration Committee has published a generalised comment regarding successful appeals of sanctions that it can review (such as checkuser blocks).
• A motion related to the Antisemitism in Poland case was passed following a declined case request.

Miscellaneous

• Voting in the 2022 Steward elections will begin on 07 February 2022, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 26 February 2022, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
• Voting in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey is open until 11 February 2022.

In regards to my pending edit that you reverted: the quoted NYTimes article does not list race as a differentiating factor. The title of the article ("Mass Shooters Are All Different. Except for One Thing: Most Are Men.") clearly indicates that the article considers gender as a differentiating factor and any other characteristic not to be a predicting factor. I find reference in the Wikipedia article to be misleading by mentioning race since the original NYTimes article does not make a case for race to be an important demographics characteristic. Immediately after this NYTimes reference, there are 2 references (Slate and Associated Press) that directly contradicts the suggestion that "white male" (vs simply "male") is over represented among mass shooters in the United States. — Preceding unsigned comment added by PlinyTheMiddleChild ( talk • contribs) 22:40, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for messaging me PlinyTheMiddleChild, the Wikipedia article states that "According to The New York Times", and because of that, does not contain a WP:POV issue. The demographics, as you have pointed out, seems to be different with different sources, I think the section currently balances all viewpoints really well. The article cited does say "Examining past New York Times coverage of mass shootings reveals... the fact that they are most commonly white", and does mention race. There has been a revision by Mudwater that I think may address some of the issues that you pointed out, feel free to message me if you have any additional questions regarding this. Hi, Justiyaya. Thanks for the welcome, but I've been editing regularly on Wikipedia for over 15 years!

I choose not to have an account partly for personal and partly for ideological reasons.

If I were to create an account, I would feel impelled to devote even more time – more than I can afford – to thoroughly perusing all Wikipedia's policies and to more editing and admin activities: this is a personal quirk which I've experienced in the past in other hobby contexts. Yes, I'm weird.

I also take the stance that edits should individually stand or fall on their own merits, with no reliance on the editor's 'reputation.' I use a "pseudo-signature" incorporating what was once my home IP (before my ISP went to dynamic IPs) mostly in order to ensure continuity in conversations.

Perhaps soon – when I'm officially retired – I'll rethink my position and open an account, probably under my own name (which, by the way, is Terry Hunt).

Hi, thanks for your explanation, and yeah Wikipedia really taken a lot of my free time during the summer. At times I've found my self afraid to revert because the other editor has a high edit count or has made significant contributions when I really should've engaged in WP:BRD instead. Hi @ Lallint, really good improvements to the article there in your sandbox. Although I'm not well versed in article improvement, here's some suggested changes that I came up with looking at the article for about an hour:

1. In early 2019, Watertown was named "The Least Politically Prejudiced Place in America". ^[1] — Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Attribution issues? in lead section as well
2. Jefferson Community College (JCC) is located in the western part of the city near the county fairgrounds. — Is located in the geography section, probably should be moved to the education section with a reference added
3. The article, mainly the geography, sports, media, and in popular culture sections needs more citations
4. The Watertown Wolves have played at the municipal arena at the fairgrounds since 2012. They are a member of the Federal Prospects Hockey League and have won two titles, in 2015 and 2018. — Same sentence repeated twice in the same section
5. In the education section "There is also a Faith Fellowship Christian School." is unreferenced
6. In general, articles about cities don't mention individual companies in their leads ( LA, CA does not mention any and NYC only mentions 2 stock exchanges), consider removing those, unless you think that these companies are really important to the topic (the city), see MOS:LEAD

Lallint think it's already in the education section but needs a reference there, I'm not so sure about having a separate higher education section if there is only one college in the city that would be mentioned (is the case for the article right now).
