I really wish you hadn't speedy deleted it. Like many images I upload, that was scanned from vintage paper sources in my own collection. (As yet I don't know if any of my vintage paper collection still exists.) What ever happened to moving old illustrations to the article talk page when a new one was uploaded? I liked that practice. My only concern was quality. I'm not sure how a poor quality image coming from a "vintage collection" is relevant here, but I regret if my sincere effort to enhance and improve the Mary Pickford article offended you. And, I labelled it for "Speedy" deletion as it has no other value that I could attest to. I think if you will review the above link, the fact that Wikipedia now has a different, better illustration is as far as I can see NOT a criteria for speedy deletion! One may list it for deletion, but speedys are very specific cases. Please be more careful in the future; deleting information that may have been unique to Wikipedia and possibly may no longer be accessible in any format anywhere else without allowing time for consideration or discussion is IMO inappropriate. -- Infrogmation 05:11, 3 October 2005 (UTC) reply

Hello, I am trying to track down a high resolution copy of the famous photo of the Barrison sisters you posted (kittens in their laps). From what I can gather, this photo is in the public domain, and not part of some family archive or what not. Do you have sources for the stuff you added here? You say the hurricane did $100million in damage to New Orleans, but the total damages for the storm are given as $110 million. So what gives? Jdorje 18:11, 22 October 2005 (UTC) reply

It was mostly from 3 or 4 websites. I'm not sure which one I got that figure from, but the same number of $100 million is quoted at http://www.globalsecurity.org/security/ops/hurricane-risk-new-orleans.htm and I know I've seen it elsewhere. Good catch that those two figures don't seem to jibe; perhaps they're estimates from different sources. BTW, I suspect whatever figure of New Orleans is probably for the whole Metro area; folks who remember it say suburban Jefferson Parish got much more damage than the city proper-- it flooded there, while the levees held in the city in '47. Maybe more research to determine just where both monitary figures were from and what they specifically refer to would be good to improve the article. Sorry, I fear I don't reall at present. Possibly it was the tag on the .it version at the time, or similar to other images uploaded at the time? By and large I tend to be conservative about retagging others' uploads as PD. If you suspect it is a problem image, I have no contradictory evidence, sorry. Heh, yes, I do take copyright issues very seriously-- I used to be very active in WP:PUI and WP:CP when I had more time to devote to Wikipedia. Looking at these images, I see they were uploaded by User:Isis, who was notorious for not giving sources. I recall discussion some time back about what to do; I took care of listing a few hundred Isis images on WP:PUI and deleting them, but IIRC it was suggested that there was no need to delete the photos of ancient artworks, as they were mechanical reproductions of public domain images. The anon seems to have deleted some information that should probably have stayed, but the bulk of the new information seemed pretty good. Was it copyvio? The user, keith-wigdor is back harrassing the real artist on this discussion page, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Surrealism This user went and created a website that defames, slanders and harrasses this artist and I want to report this to you so that this user does not use Wikipedia to harrass this person. I'm a little hazy since I no longer get to travel to and from my upper 9th ward house on a daily basis, but I seem to recall having to cross the industrial canal to get to it every time. For your information, the industrial canal isn't the actual boundery for any part of the 9th ward. It's simply the functional geographic boundery, and that's all I've ever meant by calling it a boundery.

I encourage you to review the webpage that I linked to the 9th Ward page on wikipidia when I first started it to learn more about New Orleans ward bounderies. You'll find that Almonaster is the official western boundry. I make no comment on the boundery for the bywater neighborhood, because to my knowledge, it isn't an officially bounded territory, but the 9th ward is. I propose we make an agreement to be consistant on calling the industrial canal a boundry for the entire 9th ward, or refrain from calling it a boundery at all.

Hi. Please sign and put in proper order any comments on my talk page, thank you. I see no external links on the Ninth Ward of New Orleans page. The page could indeed be improved. There are "official" (meaning city political limits) and unofficial (meaning just what people call it) neighborhood boundries in New Orleans, and some of our articles are not always clear on definitions we're using. Bywater is not a political division, but is traditional even to the points of having "Welcome to Bywater" signs along St. Claude Avenue, and last I looked at a City Ward map, the 9th Ward does indeed include areas on both sides of the Industrial Canal; "Lower 9th Ward", meaning the area below the Canal, is a traditional or folk neighborhood designation. I thought I was signed in, but in any case, the 9th ward IS on both sides of the indistrial canal, which is why it makes no sense to call it a boundry for the "Lower 9th ward" unless you are just using it as a made-up geographic boundery--which is fine, but NOT unless you apply this same arbitrary standard to the rest of the 9th Ward, as well, since it is no less deserving of mention than the lower 9th ward with regards to the industrial canal. In any case, I think we've reached a point at which we need to stop referring to the industrial canal as a ward boundery alltogether. The official western boundery of the 9th ward--ALL of the 9th ward--is Amonsaster. That's it.... and here is the external link that you were not able to find on the page that you've been so persistant in adding erroneous information to: [3] I really hope we will never have to argue on this point ever again and I hope there won't be any neeed for future edits because of this; The official bounderies listed on this page, which has been available since before I started the 9th Ward page on wikipidia, are going to be the ones used on the article.

I think one of the possible points of confusion is that we have a number of New Orleans neighborhood articles based on traditional boundries, like Treme, Faubourg Marigny, etc, whereas the 9th Ward article is the only city Ward division we have so far (I guess we need 12 Ward, 17 Ward, etc and all the rest articles for full coverage, no?). I'd be very surprised if you hadn't head the expression "Lower 9th" or "Lower 9th Ward" refering to the portion near the river below the Canal. I am not the person to say whether we need articles for the 12th and 17th wards, but I don't see why they can't be written. I just know that I wrote the original 9th Ward page because it is an oft-cited, but little known part of the city. Hurricane Katrina and the resulting news coverage brought a lot of attention the the region and to the page, as well. As a result, the article has grown and a lot of good information has been added to it. What needs to be made clear here, however, is that just because some people mistakenly refer to the LOWER 9th ward as the "9th ward" as if they have just made reference to the area you and I both know is on the river and just east of Bywater, and not to the true 9th Ward (all of it.)I think one of the purposes of wikipedia is to be a source of facts, not a propagator of myth and misinformation. Just because the "folk" boundary for the 9th ward might be what is actually the portion of the 9th ward east of the industrial canal doesn't make it factual. If you want to make a footnote that there are unofficial or "understood" folk boundaries for the lower 9th ward, then go ahead, but I have already addressed this misconception on the page, so it would only be an elaboration on what I wrote. It makes absolutely no sense to cite incorrect ward boundaries just because an uneducated public is misguided in thinking it has some other boundaries than the ones I already listed. As you know, my reaction to the Katrina disaster was to drop what I'd been doing and start what is already now a large subsite on Louisiana history; once I'm finished with Kendall (several hundred pages more to go!) and the 1895 drainage project report, I hope to put up several additional major items, first among them almost certainly Charles Gayarré's history. Hello! I am informing you that I've nominated your picture Image:KaliNepal1920.jpg at Images_and_media_for_deletion/2005_November_15 for deletion because it is currently replaced by Image:kaligoddess.jpg. There was confusion about the image you uploaded because it resembles the Nepalese God Kal Bhairab instead of the Goddess Kali. They could be one and the same but at this moment I feel it is best to have a solidified image to refer to instead of a misleading one. The characteristics are also hard to distinguish.

I noticed you said you were not sure of the copyright status on your image. For unpublished works, it is the later of either 70 years after the death of the author (photographer) or Dec 31, 2002. I'm very happy to have a functional roof now and am the envy of many of my friends. I finally don't have to position buckets and tarps every time it rains. It took me over 2 months after my return. Clean up is progressing, with progress every day, but slowly and with difficulty. I have friends living in the second floors of their houses with the downstairs gutted after flood damage; some are still waiting for their electricity &/or gas to be reconnected (not so bad in the mild weather 2 months ago, but now it gets down to the the 30sF.) The Feds are paying for some crews of contractors that are slowly making a dent hauling away the mountains of debris everywhere, and some Army Corps of Engineers crews are still working on filling in the levee breaches. Those are the only signs of any governmental help. Pretty much everything else is that is getting done is being done by the locals who are back here working long and hard, often still never having heard back from either FEMA or their overwhelmed insurance companies. There are a good number of workers for hire from elsewhere in town, many from Mexico and Central America, keeping busy ripping out flood damaged sheetrock and such. Some private charities are doing good work; Red Cross trucks are still handing out meals, brooms, mops, buckets, and dust masks in some of the harder hit neighborhoods, which is much appreciated. Hello, good work on Harry James, and thanks for the contribution. However, you did not provide any references or sources in the article. Keeping Wikipedia accurate and verifiable is very important, and as you might be aware there is currently a push to encourage editors to cite the sources they used when adding content. Can you list in the article any websites, books, or other sources that will allow people to verify the content in Harry James? I just added basic dates and names as can be found in such standard references as Who's Who of Jazz, and the Penguin and All Music guides. My usual practice for such articles is to have a few such books in front of me, sometimes augmented by some web sites like redhotjazz.com, and sumarize in my own words. It's a fair point you made about the stubby nature of history and archaeology articles on wikipedia, however i'm actually writing to suggest that before editing the portal it might be worth checking out my baby Portal: Classical Civilisation to ensure we don't copy the same sort of thing - for example i was planning on using the picture of the ampitheatre at El Jem.
