What American really means

I'm glad you define American as from North or South America not just the United States. American really does mean that. Everytime I elimanate usage of American referring to the United States this dumb fuck Firebug reverts it back. Please help if this ever happens again. By the way if anyone ever reverts the inaccurate usage of American please contact me and I'll help you get to the bottom of it. Heegoop, 30 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Except it's contrary to plain writing. "American" is near-universal usage. People know it refers to citizens of the U.S.A. and there's no disrespect to residents elsewhere in the hemisphere. In geography contexts, of course, you might want more precision.
I also disagree, respectfully, with personal name-calling like "dumb..." I hope everyone agrees that collaboration thrives on civility.

July 2005

Infrogmation, I have noticed that NoPuzzleStranger initiated changes to both articles. He is pushing a wording change to foreign name references indicating that Pilsen and Budweis are not current English name alternatives.

I have found several examples of current use of both Pilsen and Budweis in English language texts by the local population, including the municipal web site of the City of Pilsen. Obviously, both names are used by foreigners as well - for historical or practical reasons. I wonder what your thoughts were on this since you have evidently initiated the České Budějovice article including the paragraph in question. Jbetak 1 July 2005 22:02 (UTC)

Back when the Czech lands were part of the Austrian & Austro-Hungarian Empire, English language map makers often took their cue from the German map makesr as to naming. Certainly the old German names should be mentioned, but I don't know if they should be called English language names unless there is substantial English usage of that name. "Pilsen" I think is an example where that case can indeed be made; I'm not sure of other examples being wide spread. -- Infrogmation

American cats

I was just going over the comments on the American Dependencies CFD, and I was wondering whether you are arguing in favour of renaming all the "American" categories (except, of course, things like American Idol Contestants), or whether you were opposed to re-naming non-US cats. Thanks. Guettarda 3 July 2005 05:01 (UTC)

I am indeed in favor of renaming categories using "American" as a potentially ambiguous adjective (I do not count examples like the one you site where usage is made specific in the context of the title itself, or where the category name is quoting a title). I'm aware that would be a fair sized project. -- Infrogmation

Meetup

I'm thinking about a meetup for people in our part of the country. Since it would be a central location, a cheap destination, and I think I could get some favorable incentives from the chamber of commerece for people who come, I'm thinking of Marshall for the venue. Though other options certainly could be considered and no time has been set. Do you think you'd be interested? - JCarriker July 6, 2005 11:20 (UTC)

Hypothetically I'd be "interested" in a meetup, though the logistics of anything likely to take a full day or more out of town (including transportation time) make it a bit daunting, so I don't feel I can give you anything stronger than a "maybe, it depends". Hmmm, looking at the weather projections, maybe if it could be combined with the next time I have to evacuate New Orleans for a hurricane? :-) Seriously, why don't you set up a "Wikipedia:Meetup South Central United States" page (or some such name) for discussion. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 6 July 2005 14:38 (UTC)

Universal Music Group/MCA

Just go to the External Link for the website on the article page. Thanks. Ted Wilkes July 8, 2005 13:49 (UTC)

Re your question. Originally a music company, new owners renamed it MCA, Inc. and turned it into a conglomerate. I think the evolution is pretty easy: MCA, Inc, the parent company, changes its name then changes a division's name. -- MCA, Inc. (operating parent company) created through acquisitions and/or new ventures various entities that were collectively managed and reported on financially for monitoring growth as "MCA Music Entertainment Group" (operating division). After changing their legal corporate name from MCA, Inc. to Universal Studios, Inc., they appropriately changed the name of their division, "MCA Music Entertainment Group" to "Universal Music Group." Legally entity wise, and in terms of B/S and P&L reporting, nothing changed, just names. (Do not confuse the acquistion by the Bronfman holding company that purchased control of the parent operating company.) I don't have a lot of interest in this, other than perhaps the less than brillant moves by Bronfman, Jr. which cost his family several billion dollars and saw them lose control over a great distilling empire and brand name. However, I'm certain you are more qualified than me on music stuff but my background is corprate finance (M&A, restructuring) but I really do not want to write on things I did as a career - fluff is easy and fun. However, if you can't figure out the corporate structure let me know and I'll take a shot at merging them when I get a chance. Thanks. I hope I haven't confused you and made it worse! Good luck. Green Day, AGAIN!

Hi there....

I just wanted to report to you that Mike Garcia has again gone and reverted my proven and correct dates of release for 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. Evidently, banning him for 2 days is not enough to get him to stop behaving in this childish manner. He also left somewhat of a threatening message on my talk page.

Can this be resolved for once and for all?

Thanks

PetSounds 9 July 2005 18:38 (UTC)

PS - I've ventured further and saw that he also deleted the 39/Smooth page (which was the original release of the album in 1990 - which is where his stubborn confusion on the release date arises from) and added a re-direct. I've undone and restored everything - only once.

I really don't appreciate being threatened on my own talk page.

Thanks...

PetSounds 9 July 2005 18:52 (UTC)

PetSounds, I am trying to correct your information to prove it, but you keep refusing to check my sources. By the way, I am not threatening you, I am trying to avoid your edits on those pages with inaccurate information. Besides, nobody cares about your corrections, anyway. -- Mike Garcia | talk 9 July 2005 19:13 (UTC)
Ahem. *waves* I for one care about his corrections. If you can find a source other than the album cover that says 1990, then your opinion might be worth considering. the wub "?/!" 9 July 2005 19:17 (UTC)
Hi to both of you. Most of us here at Wikipedia care about accurate information, therefore we care about corrections. Mike, I don't understand your statement "about trying to correct your information to prove it". I havn't looked at your sources yet, but it's great you if you are listing sources for your information. Again, discuss any disagreements by calmly listing and evaluating sources on talk, and avoid edit wars. Thanks, -- Infrogmation 9 July 2005 19:23 (UTC)
Infrogmation, it's at the talk page of the band and Petsounds' talk page. Their official website also says the correct year ( 1990). -- Mike Garcia | talk 9 July 2005 19:26 (UTC)
Good then; I assume you've posted a link to that on the talk page discussion? Remember that siting your sources and evidence is especially important when there is disagreement. -- Infrogmation

Their website is all fancy flash so I can't point you direct to the source but that says 1990 for 39/Smooth, not 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours which was released later. They are not the same album. the wub "?/!" 19:34, 9 July 2005 (UTC) reply

Bob Dylan pages

Hi again. I've spent the last while refurbishing and improving all of the articles on Bob Dylan's albums, making them much more informative, and as of last night this user named "monicasdude" keeps reverting my info (on many of the over-40 album entries), deciding it is "inaccurate" and "wrong" (although my info is from reliable sources) and he keeps erasing all the hard work I've done, even telling me that I'm "screwing up" the pages. I reminded him they were not HIS alone, and that others were free to improve upon them, which I have, but I had to restore my work again this morning. Which means that this fellow is in jeopardy of violating the 3RR rule. Examples are John Wesley Harding, Planet Waves and Bob Dylan discography. His deletions are also reinstating poor cover images that I improved on, as well as proper formatting (especially the discography page - which, if you compare, you'll see that the albums section was messy, while I made it more presentable and practical). PetSounds 13:26, 15 July 2005 (UTC) reply

Please don't harass the admins when you have edit disputes, especially since you consistently refuse to provide any references or factual information to support disputed positions. It is remarkably inappropriate here, for example, to change the titles of pages discussing Bob Dylan albums to reflect your preferred versions of the titles rather than the official titles used on the albums and documented on the artist's website, nor is it appropriate to repeatedly insert text declaring an album has been deleted from the artist's catalog when it is offered for sale on the artist's official website. You are not the only person who works hard on their contributions, but you seem to have a uniquely elevated view of the value of your own contributions and a demonstrated lack of interest inachieving consensus. Regarding your reversion of my disambiguation...

Fixing the 5000+ links to "American" is our major project right now at Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links. I understand your desire to maintain the exact wording of your discussion in Category talk:American actors, but can we arrive at some way to achieve that without linking to the disambiguation page? Perhaps you could delink the term, or direct the link to "America (disambiguation)" instead? Cheers. --  BD2412 talk 23:07, August 19, 2005 (UTC)

I rather think that this was a reasonablee and rare exception to the generally good rule to elimiate links to disambiguation pages. Thanks for your good work in fixing the piles of links in article space. As the link is in a talk page discussion rather than article space, I don't see that leaving it is harmful. However if you feel strongly that leaving it is some sort of impediment or problem, I suppose I can remove or rewrite my discussions if you think I need to. Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard

I have created a new project page at Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard, and Secretondon suggested that I tell my fellow bureaucrats about it. It's designed as a forum where users with bureaucrat rights can discuss difficult situations, either beforehand (for advice about what to do) or after taking action (for review and feedback). It's similar to another page I created, which is starting to catch on (e.g., Jimbo used it this August): Wikipedia:account suspensions, which is not for 3RR or simple vandalism but for close calls and disputed blocks.

Vandalism

I noticed that you have previously blocked User:66.4.225.11 for vandalism. While they have been thankfully absent from editing for a while, the anon IP has unfortunately returned to editing (and vandalising) today. I reverted the changes that I could find; could you please block the user again? Thank you. jglc | t | c 14:23, 10 August 2005 (UTC) reply

Thanks for contacting me, -- Infrogmation 16:00, 20 August 2005 (UTC) reply

RE: Meetup

Sorry for the lag in response time. Would you mind if a set up the meet up as tentatively in Marshall? I think some people in nearby Longview may be interested in helping set things up. I'd create a subpage in my userspace and move it to meetups when we know more, I wouldn't want it to become one of those embarassing neglected request on the page. Thanks. - JCarriker 16:07, August 20, 2005 (UTC)

Just a personal question

I read that you are fm New Orleans. Just out of curiousity, I am wondering where are you editing Wikipedia now. And would you consider going back there (if it is ever possible)? Or may it be the case the entire population of the city have to be relocated elsewhere? (Think Tuvalu, "The population may evacuate during the next decades to New Zealand, or Niue, a small Pacific island (independent but associated with New Zealand) that isn't threatened by sea level rise, but does have decreasing population.") I'm currently a refugee in Florida. I hope to return home to help rebuild my beloved home town whenever such is possible. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 19:03, 31 August 2005 (UTC) reply

Sending blessings to you, Frogman. My people in Shreveport tell me a lot of New Orlineans are up that way, with their children enrolled in schools there. Glad to know you are safe and well. DeeCee reportedly is planning to send buses to transport 400 refugees here to our National Guard Armory by Labor Day, and fundraisers are being held all over. Take heart. deeceevoice 18:54, 2 September 2005 (UTC) reply

I'm glad to see your alright, I've been helping coordinate some on-line reliefe efforts, and will still be doing so. Actually, now that I know your OK, I'm only have to find someone I went to high school with. If you need a more long term arrangemnet let me know and I'll find someone in Marshall who'll take you into their home. Like Shreveport, we are also taking in many refugees. - JCarriker 11:24, September 4, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks much. I'm still hoping to be able to get back sometime. After another 5 days to a week here in Florida I'll probably be heading west, most likely to take up the offer of an old friend in Austin if I still can't go back to NOLA. However a day or two somewhere might be helpful in transit depending on circumstances; if so I'll let you know if that's something to look in to. Sincere thanks to you. All the best wishes, C.M.

Please take a look at these new project pages and give some feedback. Good idea? Bad? Needs improvement? -- Uncle Ed 12:25, September 1, 2005 (UTC)

Binary File

NatureBoy 20:41, 13 September 2005 (UTC) reply

I removed the reference to P-26_Peashooter in Boeing_247 under "Related Content, Designation Sequence, 248 and 266" because the referenced page "P-26_Peashooter" is a binary file. Never saw this before in wp. This binary file also comes up when searching for "P-26_Peashooter" from the left menu. I downloaded the file and scanned for viruses and it came up clean. Any ideas? Looks like it needs an Admin intervention to remove it.

NatureBoy 13:40, 14 September 2005 (UTC) reply

I put back the removed references as the linked page now works, also added 281 to sequence to match the peashooter page. Looks like the problem has been fixed.
