I've only come across him a couple of times in the last few months, but I just happened to look in on an article I helped build up a couple of months ago along with its primary author, before it was put into the real Wiki world. The article - Reactions to the September 11, 2001 attacks - was created in a bid to have a broader article recording the reactions around the world to the 9/11 attacks (ie expressions of support, sympathy etc as well as less savoury reactions). I noticed the introduction had changed quite a bit since I last looked at it, and currently was sitting there with some pretty awkward phrasing. I noted this and other points on the talk page and then copy edited the lead to improve the language and grammar, and used a small part of a previous version in doing that (I made some other edits as well). When I realised that it was Jaakobou who had actually made some of the changes I was working on (he'd made them over a day before I came to the page again as it happens), I noticed he was also canvassing for support in a bid to get the whole article merged. I then asked him on his talk page for more details about why he wanted to do that, and what he was actually proposing in respect of other related articles. As you may recall he's been very active in opposing mergers and deletions of related 9/11 articles, so it just seemed a bit pointy and as if he wants to keep "his" articles, but remove any that have been put together by others. Anyway that's the background ...
Jaakobou then began a mini-edit war over the changes to the introduction, performing a wholesale revert of my tidy up while accusing me of adding "junk" to the article. He then also accused me of stalking him. Another user then just appeared out of nowhere on Jaakobou's talk page to accuse me of the same thing, wrongly claiming I'd never edited "either page" [sic] before. On this occasion at least Jaakobou appears to be back to his old habits of taking ownership of articles and making unfounded accusations of stalking against any editor who presumes to question or amend his edits even on just one page. He also threatened me with 3RR sanctions if me or "any of my friends" reverted him, such that we're also back to the old unfounded tag team editing accusations. I find the latter accusation especially galling as Jaakobou is someone with a long history of off-wiki canvassing and contact, whereas I am not. The problem is that I'm not willing to be pushed way from making non-controversial edits by this sort of belligerent attitude and by unsubstantiated accusations - so this kind of conflict is likely to flare up again unless he takes a less proprietorial attitude to certain articles and edits. In fact we have come across each other recently on other pages (him following me, as it happened) where his contribution has been as more of a (relatively) disinterested mediator, so it is possible.
As usual I'm not sure what I hope to achieve by bringing this here, and this particular debate seems to have cooled down now anyway, but it's better than being at WP:AE or WP:ANI I guess. -- Nickhh ( talk) 16:58, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
Hi Nick, yes I'm still mentoring Jaakobou. With regard to this particular article I ask you to consult with his other mentor, Avi. As you may be aware, I avoid 9/11 topics because my family was nearly killed in that disaster. Thank you for expressing your concerns; I hope you respect where I'm coming from here. Best regards, Durova Charge! 18:45, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
It's still usually faster to try to find a contact for the author. If it's a recent article, last 5 years, e-mail the contact for any articles, if the scientists isn't a primary contact for the articles. If it's taxonomy, and within the past 10 years, I can probably get you an e-mail address for the scientist. Let me know. I sometimes hesitate to state the obvious, because it is so obvious, but not everyone on Wikipedia is used to the same resources, so it can be useful. -- Blechnic ( talk) 17:51, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:Naming conventions (ships). While it does not explicitly state as such, take a look at almost any ship article here. It is our common practice to do as such. Also, WP:SHIPS has developed specialized templates to aid with the italics and disabigs: {{ USS}}, {{ HMS}}, {{ Sclass}}, and {{ warship}}, etc. - MBK 004 00:07, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
(outdent) Well, it's odd sometimes how publishing conventions occasionally differ from professional custom within a field. Wikipedia's going by the book here so I really can't object. Hi Durova. I'm feeling a bit guilty about not having followed up my promise to look at images on Commons uploaded by CarolSpears. Is the situation in hand or is more needed over there? I would be happy to do other stuff in lieu of that... The other reason I'm feeling guilty about this is that there is at least one other instance where you pointed out that I should do something instead of suggesting others do it. Another AN/ANI thread, I think, but I can't recall it now. Can you remember that one? Carcharoth ( talk) 05:59, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
Regarding Talk:Jackie_Robinson#Requested_photograph this request - I've taken several photos of the busts of Jackie and Mack Robinson at City Hall in Pasadena. I would gladly post them, but I'm unclear on the permissibility and proper licensing of original photos of (copyrighted) statues. Such photos are currently not accepted on Commons. Do you have any pointers? Thanks. -- Amble ( talk) 08:57, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
Hi Durova, could you tell me how to simply find out if an image is a copywrite violation? "This" was marked a while ago as not acceptable for the logo of the site to be on the article but it was not deleted. I just want to remove it if it a violation to have it up but I don't know how to check this kind of information. The website says that it is copy protected. I thought it might be something new I can learn how to do to help out with images on the site. I have read that images in general have too few of editors helping out so I thought I could get my toes wet and start like this. If I like it then I can maybe help out in the areas of images. If you are too busy don't worry, I am never in a rush, I am just trying to figure out a useful area for myself that I can do that has less drama then the recent activities going on in many articles I go to.
On another subject, I just went to look at a photo I had uploaded to the commons that I had shared with you a while back. I saw that a photo I had uploaded with the help of my mentor Delldot has been put up for deletion. An editor said that it is not named properly because it shows ulcerations of the sores (here is the link to what I am babbling about [3]. It is named correctly because I saw a dermatologist to get help with the rash and this is what the doctor called it. In the comments made about this I try to explain this and that the sores are ulcerated do to scratching in my sleep. I have never dealt with this so I am hoping you can help me with it. It also states that it is not properly released so I would also hope you can help me with this too. I am the owner of the picture so what else do I need to do to help keep the photo available? I have noticed that this picture has been used now six times, that's what it says anyways, on different Wiki sites.
I wanted your opinion too, sorry I am being a pain and a pest here, about the P.G. picture. I uploaded one of the pictues [4]. I don't know if you remember all the others I have about this but I have like 6 more pictures of Pyoderma_gangrenosum. I picked this one because of what you said about being clean of outside things like tape and so forth. Do you think I should upload the others too? I have more pictures but until I can get this figured out I don't want to bother anyone loading images if I am doing them incorrectly. It's a waste of time and energy for me and the other editors looking at them. Thanks so much, I hope you have the time to help me figure this all out. I really do want to do it the right way and I am trying. -- CrohnieGal Talk 18:20, 6 July 2008 (UTC) Long question. I'll answer in numbered format.

As promised: Image:Joan of Arc plaque at Chateau de Blois.jpg. I guess it commemorates the 500th anniversary of either the Siege of Orléans, or her passage through Blois on her way to Orleans (probably both). Possibly there might be some quibble over the 1929 date and freedom of panorama, but I'll leave that up to you to sort. Wikipedia should definitely have something on the big anniversaries of such events - there are usually a wealth of exhibitions and ceremonies that can be referenced for that kind of thing, and it would make a nice paragraph in the Legacy section (which should have a summary by the way, not just three links to subsidiary articles). I've just committed one of my own pet peeves, overposting in the oppose section of an RFA. (I think perhaps you are right, my objectivity is probably lacking). I would like to, if you are agreeable, remove our discussion away from the RFA to the RFA talkpage, out of fairness to the candidate, as it is a distraction to his RFA. I will leave it there if you wish, or remove it if you wish, and I have unwatchlisted the page to help restrain myself from reacting/responding. I apologize for attacking your good faith opinion. Finalnight has retired, with the proverbial back-breaking straw being the hot mess that was his RfA. I think the offer is a bit too little, a bit too late. And I don't get the sense that Finalnight is the type to do the whole emotional "retire/unretire" thing, based upon his final statement. The project is worse for his leaving, and worse for the mess that RfAs become sometimes. This was one of those times, unfortunately, and the "8.9%" thing, as well as the seeming to question his integrity regarding the GA/FA issue (even if you didn't mean it that way, it's how it came across, at least to me) played no small part. Your offer is noble, but unnecessary, it seems. Regards, S. Dean Jameson 23:28, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
(outdent) One of the shortcomings of text communication is that it's easy to come away from a conversation with a mistaken impression of another person's intent. Assume good faith is policy and I follow it; I wish you would too. You began this thread by explaining how GA review is done as if I needed to be told; I let that pass without comment because I don't wish to seem boastful. The things you've posted afterward require objection. Some people mean they believe a person lacks integrity when they say they question it. I mean no more than it's an open question: as far as I'm able to tell, it's also possible this person meant well and was simply inexperienced in article space. That's why I've offered to collaborate on a featured drive and eventually nominate for a second RFA. There could hardly be a fairer way to oppose a candidacy. When I make a vote at RFA, however, it is the interests of the project that are paramount. On the RFA talk page you seemed to imply that some people vote oppose recreationally--I'm certainly not such a person. My energies go into coaching; I'm as likely to nominate as to vote at all. Now the tone of your responses appears to be seeking milquetoast bromides from me about his feelings; I'm not keen on lip service. The first thing every Wikipedia administrator needs is a Kevlar flameproof Troll-B-Gon suit and if this fellow really has the right stuff he can weather a little civil criticism. What I am willing to do--and what you rarely see from an RFA opposer--is walk the walk about preparing him for adminship. Is he serious about it? We'll see. Durova Charge! 08:12, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

It probably won't be long before my generation seeks landmark status for some of the iconic shopping malls. Sherman Oaks Galleria, for instance, is basically lost to history. It was specifically mentioned in the song " Valley Girl" and featured in films from the period such as Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but after damage from the 1992 Northridge earthquake the establishment went into economic decline until a late 1990s attempt at revival gutted and rebuilt the structure. So that particular monument to vapid adolescent consumerism is no longer. The last time I was in Sherman Oaks, the miniature golf course down the street remained pretty much unchanged. I figure within ten years vintage leg warmers will be selling for $80 as nostalgia sets in. Have a tubular day, Durova Charge! 02:04, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi Durova,
Just to let you know that the Featured Picture Image:Russellquiltera.jpg is due to make an appearance as Picture of the Day on July 30, 2008. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Template:POTD/2008-07-30. I'm just going through the images at Learned Hand prior to putting it up for Peer Review, and then, if all goes well, FAC. You did a brilliant job on cleaning up this picture, I must say, but I have a couple of worries. Here's my thought process. Although the license says that there are no restrictions on publication, a look at the source suggests that there might be a couple of provisos: that the image be used under fair use, and that we comply with their principles on serving originals. Infuriatingly, this photo is dated 1924, which is one year too late to give us totally free use of it, I think. I am not sure what "serving the originals" entails here, but I'm guessing that we wouldn't be allowed to photoshop it. You know more about image use than me, so can I ask you for your opinion? (For the moment, I am going to move the image to the article talk page.) qp10qp ( talk) 20:24, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

I want the answer there. I'm completely lost about what is going on with this, and I suspect there are many others who are just as lost. Is RFAR supposed to keep the community in the dark? Is RFAR a closed process where people are not allowed to speak? I looked for guidance. There is none. Everyone keeps talking about the community support for Wales' actions. Why not just include a link in response instead of going to my talk page and saying don't ask? What's the big secret here? One link. -- Blechnic ( talk) 15:47, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Just to let you know that the Featured Picture Image:Tacoma Narrows Bridge destruction.ogv is due to make an appearance as Picture of the Day on July 20, 2008. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Template:POTD/2008-07-20. howcheng { chat} 17:57, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Durova, didn't you say you give some recognition for previously indeffed editors who work on good articles a while back? Anyway, please see this. :) Happy editing! Sincerely, Le Grand Roi des Citrouilles Tally-ho! 18:04, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Durova, you're known as hot with images, what's the score with uploading this 1626 image of Greenwich from the Musuem of london website? Presumably its pd by virtue of age? Cheers. -- Joopercoopers ( talk) 11:47, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Saw your post at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history/Logistics about helping to restore a cache of historic maps, etc. Please count me in. I will only have, however, limited internet access of the next several days, but would love to participate. Thanks. — Bellhalla ( talk) 12:45, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Definitely interested, although my access to image processing soft in the next couple of weeks may be intermittent due to a change of continent. Always wanted to learn retouching from a pro. What's the plan? Dhatfield ( talk) 17:04, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
I didn't exactly say that you should post on the talk page and moved your post here. Mrg has already replied on the logistics talk page and I will leave this like this. The new structure is intended that people can contact you directly. Wandalstouring ( talk) 13:19, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
Hi Durova, I just uploaded a high-res version of the famous Boston Massacre engraving that has somehow been overlooked in everyone's scouring of the LoC for worthwhile images. (There's also a second scan there, of what appears to be another copy of the engraving. I'm not sure which I prefer.) Anyways they don't look like there's much dust or anything to take care of, but these would be excellent FP candidates with some minor touchups. Calliopejen1 ( talk) 06:22, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
I am disappointed at Cailil. You nominated Cailil and now he doesn't use the tools much. He will not block. OK if he doesn't want to but then unblock someone. I gave him examples of good people to block and good people to unblock. When you were an admin, you didn't go on a frenzy to block but you did use the tools occasionally. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

Hi, Durova! I saw the "chicks with guns" featured picture nomination - I love it! I upload lots of military images at Commons and will keep my eyes open for other candidates. What do you think of Image:USAF female Drill Instructor.jpg? Kelly hi! 15:12, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Hello Durova. I supported the FP nomination of the image "Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp". It's a great image.

Hello Durova. I would like to apologize for my mistake. You are a well respected editor and I know about you. Wikipedia editors know about famous wiki-editors. It was an accident. I will be more careful next time. I joined in October 2007 and I’ve read about your incidences. I’m a little nervous. Please accept my apology. You can removed this message after you read it. Did you ever get an answer about that? Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 15:34, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
With regard to this, you repeated your demand without complying with my request, or even suggesting you might honor it. If you had changed your mind and done the courtesy revert or asked me about my reasons for requesting it, well then I'd be more amenable. Durova Charge! 06:41, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
