Re:Coppin' our style...

As I said to Guyinblack, I've used a number of Halo articles as exemplars for improving a few of the StarCraft ones, mostly for structure, because of key simularities between the series: science fiction, influencial in genre, significantly expanded universe for a video game—there's quite a few parallels. Nought wrong with that, its arguably good for consistency in style across WP, even if it is unoriginal. I tend to work best when I know quite what it is I'm pursuing, and the Halo articles, most being solid GAs or FAs and often being the only vaguely related video game articles around of high quality, do just that. As for the StarCraft media thing, I certainly got the idea from List of Halo media, but after recommendation, its also somewhat based around List of Kingdom Hearts media as well, except I prefered the Halo approach of keeping images and prose to the intro. If anything, take it as a compliment: your work's good enough to be ripped off! :D

Shame about the image, I suppose the one we have will have to do. -- Sabre ( talk) 22:49, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Another bit of Half-Life cruft has been put down, I thought you might want to know due to the deletion nominations of a few a couple of months back. Combine has been rewritten, and I've merged (what little was actually worth merging) Seven Hour War into it. Slowly but surely, Half-Life is being cleaned up. Shame I don't have access to Raising the Bar, that thing probably contains a ton of design information that could be used... -- Sabre ( talk) 19:09, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
Can I borrow you in an administrative function for a moment? Could I ask you to clear out previous version backlogs of Image:HalfLife2 City17 TrainStationSquare.jpg and Image:Test chamber AYool.jpg, to remove the non-free images stored there? I'm assuming that all admins can do that, if not, I don't suppose you could point me to that template that requests the removal of previous images. I can't find it anywhere, it doesn't make itself easily found. -- Sabre ( talk) 19:44, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

A Link to the Past reverting AVGN removal edits

Please be advised that ALTP is reverting edits made to remove AVGN from Wikipedia pages. My edits are made per the previous group consensus at the video game project discussion. As was decided, vigilance was decided as the best means of keeping the spam off the wikipedia pages, rather than blacklisting AVGN outright. This also includes further questioning on my talk page, where he's pretending the entire discussion at the video game project never happened or never really meant anything. I've notified A Man In Black as well. -- Marty Goldberg ( talk) 23:14, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

List of Chinese exonyms for places in Japan

I disagree with the too hasty deletion of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Chinese exonyms for places in Japan.

While I have no particular interest in the substance of this page, I was inclined to keep it because of its categories, which were so unfamiliar to me that I was still exploring the cohort when you closed the deletion thread.

I am concerned that no one who worked on this page was notified that it was being considered for deletion. A template was placed on the deleted page, yes. However, a conventional follow-through which would have involved notifying each of the contributors about the proposed deletion was only assumed to have been done. As User talk:Atitarev shows, this was not done, despite the fact that the anomaly was specifically noted, e.g.,

  • Administrivia: The templates seem to have not been completely applied to this AfD -- I've attempted to fix them, but if a full-time wikignome could check my work, that'd be wise.Quasirandom ( talk) 22:49, 29 September 2008 (UTC) [emphasis added by Tenmei

I am also concerned because there was at least one suggestion that the content could be retained if it were re-cast in the context of a re-titled article, e.g.,

Comment: The articles you listed are useful and encyclopedic because they address pertinent topics. The problem with this article in question is that 1. per TakuyaMurata, why Chinese? And 2. since the overwhelming majority of Japanese kanji has its correspondance in Chinese, and that the overwhelming majority of Japanese placenames are written exclusively in kanji, there is virtually no "real" Chinese exonym for Japanese places. I'd suggest changing this article into List of exonyms in East Asia, and listing placenames in China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, etc., all of which used the Chinese writing at one point, making real exonyms (e.g. Seoul) of particular encyclopedic interest. But in any case there's nothing in this article now that's worth keeping. o ( talk) 13:46, 30 September 2008 (UTC) [emphasis added by Tenmei

I don't understand why it is not construed as significant that one of the article's contributors did argue to keep; and there was a modest response to the suggestion that the article could be re-focused and expanded in light of the general comments of those who saw no value in the work, e.g.,

To user o, who initiated the deletion: There is a big number of monolingual lists in the Wikipedia. You might to review them before trying to delete someone's efforts. You suggested to improve, why not instead of being destructive be productive and improve the article instead? I suggest Korean and Vietnamese may be a candidate for a separate article, as they don't have a Kun'yomi concept, which makes Japanese and Chinese so different (more different than modern Chinese vs On'yomi. -- Atitarev ( talk) 06:28, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[emphasis added by Tenmei

I was struck by the fact that the arguments to keep were thoughtful, considered, informed. In contrast, the fact that editors arguing for delete offered only cursory comments. I am persuaded that these becomes relevant factors.

In my view, the following alternatives should be considered:

  1. This deletion should be reverted, and the discussion thread should be re-opened ... AND
  2. A reasonable amount of time should be allowed for comment by the editors who constructed this article ... AND
  3. This article might be proposed for consideration by the Wikipedia:Article Rescue Squadron ... AND
  4. As a general rule, the significance of unfamiliar categories should not be too casually dismissed as appears to have been done in this instance. -- Tenmei ( talk) 15:21, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
I'm not trying to argue that the result was wrong, only that closing off discussion was too rushed. I don't quite understand what you're offering to do, but whatever it is becomes a good step in a constructive direction. Please explain the term "source code." -- Tenmei ( talk) 15:34, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
I rarely disagree with 日本穣 in such matters as this; and 日本穣 did favour deletion. Please allow me to reiterate: My reservations focus solely on what seemed to me the premature nature of that closed discussion .... which could have remained open. -- Tenmei ( talk) 15:44, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
Yes, please provide the source code. I also need a copy of the edit history. My solution to this trivial problem involves ensuring the several contributors to this article will have access to the source code; and I guess that means that I will have to contact each one individually. Thank you for helping me work through this in a step-by-step manner. I have three related questions:
  1. Am I correct in believing that, as a conventional practice, the contributors to an article are notified when it has been nominated for deletion?
  2. Am I correct in feeling I was remiss in not commenting about this oversight as soon as I noticed it?
  3. Am I correct in believing that I was short-sighted in not appreciating that the I needed to propose thread be kept open longer than five days so that there would be an appropriate opportunity for the contributors to comment further? -- Tenmei ( talk) 17:22, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the source code. I have copied this text plus our merged discussion thread at User:Tenmei/Sandbox/List of Chinese exonyms for places in Japan. You have explained that "as long as you aren't canvassing, you are allowed to notify wikiprojects/related contribtors." However, other than Atitarev, the only way I know how to identify the list of contributors is with the edit history; and the only way I know how to identify relevant wikiprojects is with the talk page. Can you retrieve this information? -- Tenmei ( talk) 18:16, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for your follow-up. -- Tenmei ( talk) 18:39, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Okay done. Is it just me or are the tenses used in the article all out of whack? Or is it used correctly? Should I refer to the game in the past or future tense in the Gameplay and Synopsis sections, which assume that the game will never be released? (Like: can, could, could have). I actually think that using present tense would be easiest to write and to read. Development is fine since all of those events have taken place in real life. Gary King ( talk) 02:39, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
The other editor helping out on the article re-added the Nova image; I guess I can see how it can be useful, because the other image where Nova is in a firefight certainly doesn't show how the game's primary character looks like. Would we need some more critical commentary on her or should it be okay as it is? Gary King ( talk) 15:28, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Re-evaluation for FAC

Can I get you to re-evaluate the FAC for Crush? I think the points you raised have been addressed. Thanks. -- MASEM 18:35, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Just want to followup on the comments you made after this for the FAC, specifically on the Lead and story. As I've noted there:
  • The game has maybe 6 to 10 minutes of actual story, with a half-paragraph in the manual. I have expanded it since you first looked at it (expanding the ending, trying to connect the story to the gameplay even as tenanious as it is, but expanding it any more starts to push against free content issues (percent of original work used).
  • The lead has been expanded since you've first read it. Given the length of the article (about 1500 words), the size of the Lead is actually appropriate (2 paragraphs), and it pretty much summarizes all the key points of the article; adding any more would start to duplicate information instead of summarizing.
As I noted, I made these changes before your last comment on the FAC, and responded with the above. I know what I had looks very similar to what was there before (when you made the original comment on the lead/story) but it has been expanded as much as I think I reasonably can per the information available, MOS, and non-free concerns. I have not changed that since your last comment. -- MASEM 00:37, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Would you be interested in being a mentor? I intend to volunteer myself.

Logo is already 256. I removed second Nova image per my edit summary reasoning. Gary King ( talk) 02:07, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

I just noticed that you removed the logo image I added, and I can't say I wasn't expecting it somewhat. I thought it would work out like what was done for Diablo III, but there you go. Anyway, I had originally intended to add a speedy deletion tag to the image if it wasn't kept in the article, but apparently there isn't one specifically for self-uploaded images (I assumed there was because there are such tags for self-made articles). Would adding {{ db-g7}} work since I am the only contributor to the image? If not, could you go ahead and delete it for me as a request? Thanks. -- Commdor {Talk} 22:01, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

I am filing a complaint on AnI over your claim of ownership of this article. There has been no discussion, much less consensus about leaving out information sourced from Star Trek: Enterprise, and until such time as actual discussion occurs and actual consensus is achieved, the removal of validly sourced information is detrimental to the article. I'm serious here, so also please stop violating AGF. Since you say there is no cronyism, I'm following the rulebook despite my suspicions. -- Davidkevin ( talk) 02:23, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
