In the redirect Talk:Yuriy Norshteyn, the bot changed the target to Talk:Yuri Norstein but also erased the {{ R from move}} template. But the template should stay there. In general, if a redirect is tagged as an R from move, the bot should not erase the template from the corresponding redirect talk page, which will usually also be a redirect from a move. The bot edit will usually happen when A has been moved to B and then a page mover swaps B with a redirect C that had no talk page, resulting in Talk:B being redlinked after the move. In this case, some double-redirect fixing bot will retarget A to C and then Bot1058 will retarget Talk:A to Talk:C before AnomieBOT III could have otherwise recognized Talk:A as a broken redirect. OK, the two cases linked to above were both  Fixed by bot v 3.70 (though I have not added code to verify that the {{ R from move}} template is legitimately placed – that may not be necessary).

Besides the {{ R from incomplete disambiguation}} scenario mentioned above, there is another scenario where the bot now keeps the {{ R from move}} when it might have been better just removing it. In this case replacing the {{ R from move}} with something like {{ R from list entry}}, {{ R from merge}} or {{ R from avoided double redirect}} kind of makes sense, e.g. HERE and HERE. But just erasing the shell with the R from move is the easier thing to do since some of those templates produce error messages (e.g. should not be placed on talk pages). Deleting the talk page redirect with no incoming links as G6 housekeeping is something I sometimes do as well. – wbm1058 ( talk) 20:48, 26 August 2023 (UTC) reply

I moved Atti (village) to Atti, Jalandhar, then retargeted the redirect to the dab page at Atti (there are several villages with the name), then I realised that we only have an article about one of them at the moment, so I quickly undid my edit (so that now Atti (village) is again a redirect to Atti, Jalandhar). But in the meantime, the bot has managed to repoint Talk:Atti (village) to the dab pages's talk page. I don't think I'm the only who occasionally makes such mistakes, and otherwise there are bound to be a lot of moves that get quickly reverted, so I'm wondering if it wont' be a good idea to have some sort of time delay to the bot's operation. Yes there's a problem there, bot. But I don't think waiting longer is the answer. What if, instead of waiting an hour, you waited 6 hours, but after sleeping eight hours on it, Uanfala woke up and realized the mistake and fixed it 8 hours later. Hard to know how long is "long enough" to wait. No, the better solution for you, Bot1058, is to tag these with {{ R from incomplete disambiguation}} so there is a way that you can revert your edit after Uanfala reverted theirs. In the meantime I need to update that template to work on these when they're placed in talk space, as opposed to article space, and then look over your shoulder the first time you process those to make sure you get them right wbm1058 ( talk) 17:11, 29 November 2018 (UTC) reply

@ Richhoncho: On which page(s) did the bot remove {{ WikiProject Songs}}? Looking at your edit history just before you posted here, I see that you replaced the bot's redirects with project tags on Talk:Used To (LeToya Luckett song) and Talk:Prime Time (The Alan Parsons Project song), but looking at the edit histories of those, the project tag was never there before you replaced the redirect with it. The bot did remove {{ R from move}}, which may not be best, since that's the template the bot uses to detect and replace unsynchronized redirects. I'm not sure of the value of project-tagging redirect pages; by not having the {{ R from move}} there the page isn't monitored so if it goes out of sync again in the future, that won't be detected and corrected. – wbm1058 ( talk) 20:49, 28 September 2019 (UTC) reply

It seems that Bot1058 and the double redirect fixing bots AvicBot and EmausBot are edit warring on Talk:Kate Lee (musician). Syncing the unsynchronized redirect had cause a double redirect to be created, while fixing the double redirect had caused the redirect to become unsynchronized. The bot sometimes creates duplicate talk pages with for task 3 when an article and its talk page is moved from "X" to "X (qualifier)" and the DAB is moved from "X (disambiguation)" to "X" but the person who moves the DAB page to the base name forgets to move the DAB page's talk meaning "Talk:X" still redirects to "Talk:X (qualifier)" so the bot then tags "Talk:X" with {{ WikiProject Disambiguation}} but the older talk page stays at "Talk:X (disambiguation)". I notice this and request at WP:RMT ( example) but its quite possible many people simply don't notice this. Quinn and Talk:Quinn were fixed with the edit history of the duplicate at Talk:Quinn (disambiguation). I therefore suggest that when "X" is a DAB but "Talk:X" redirects to "Talk:X (qualifier)" or similar but "Talk:X (disambiguation)" exists with a {{ WikiProject Disambiguation}} that the bot does not replace the "Talk:X" redirect with {{ WikiProject Disambiguation}} but instead produces a list of such cases so that they can be fixed manually namely by moving the DAB pages talk to the base name.

As a side note I'd also suggest the bot should tag the talk page of DAB pages that don't yet have a talk page with {{ WikiProject Disambiguation}} as well as talk page of DAB pages in other namespaces like categories with {{ category ambiguous}} but I realize this will probably need a new bot request. Owen Brennan uses Template:hndis (which redirects to Template:Human name disambiguation), a template which populates the category, so the bot should make the desired edit.

Task 3 runs hourly. I see from this diff that you moved the page at 07:23, 25 November 2021 and you converted to a disambiguation page at 07:32, 25 November 2021. The bot should have made the desired edit shortly after 08:00, 25 November 2021 but it did not. I don't know why as it appears to have been running normally at that time. Actually it is Owen Brennan that should have been populating Category:Unsynchronized disambiguation talk pages, not its talk page. I was playing around with that page, making changes to subst: templates and then clicking Show preview without actually saving any changes to the page. I did see that it was populating the category in preview mode, then out of the blue it wasn't because my bot fixed it! Actually it is Hill Road that should have been populating Category:Unsynchronized disambiguation talk pages, not its talk page. Again, I just clicked "edit", saw that the page was a member of 4 hidden categories, and Category:Unsynchronized disambiguation talk pages was not one of them. Then I clicked Show preview and there still were 4 hidden categories, but below that at the bottom it did show that the "new" version had 5 hidden categories including Category:Unsynchronized disambiguation talk pages! So I did a WP:Null edit, and there were still 5 hidden categories after I saved the page. So, this is some sort of system caching issue, and I'm not sure how to solve it. Other than having my bot make even more null edits in a further attempt to ensure all caches are cleared. You should have moved Talk:Cameron Thompson together with Cameron Thompson at 01:56. There is a box "Move associated talk page" which should be checked by default. Don't uncheck it. I realize though that sometimes there is page history at the target that might block you from making that move.

The most recent edit to Cameron Thompson at 03:52 did not populate the category because the talk was synchronized – it wasn't a redirect. It became unsynched when the 04:59 move was made. That's a problem because of this issue. If you had moved Talk:Cameron Thompson to Talk:Cameron Thompson (politician) before 03:52, then the 03:52 edit should have immediately populated the category. – wbm1058 ( talk) 20:10, 10 March 2022 (UTC) reply

This should get fixed sooner rather than later though, even if Cameron Thompson isn't edited again for months or even years, because Talk:Cameron Thompson is now populating Category:Articles with talk page redirects, another category I created and patrol. these pages were stable until some change made in the hour before 01:00, 22 February 2022 triggered the bot to edit at 01:03, 22 February 2022. I'm not sure what that change might have been; I haven't found anything. It's possibly a delayed flushing of some system cache that should have been refreshed months ago. This bot runs hourly, so a record of the most recent bot run is only kept for an hour, thus I don't have the console log of what the bot saw. Why does this bot remove wikiproject banners from redirect talk pages that are also redirects? Redirects support wikiprojects, and the banners allow the functioning of the ArticleAletsBot to track pages and inform the related wikiprojects of AABot tracked nomination for that page.

"Unsynchronized" doesn't seem to cover this case, since partial disambiguation can be covered under a particular wikiproject (ie. "(song)" or "(album)" where multiple such exist, but it would make sense for WPSONG or WPALBUM to track these redirects)

@ Aravindhan Ravikumar: belated reply as I'd just left on my summer road trip when you dropped this report, and then it got overlooked when I returned from my wiki-break. My bot depends on the presence of {{ R from move}} templates on talk pages to work as you expect. As like this version of the page:

Unfortunately Neel.arunabh, an editor who was later banned for lack of editing competence, messed up the page, leaving a redirect category shell without parameters (they also made an unhelpful edit to the article-redirect). Then another editor fixed that by replacing the page contents with a {{ Talk page of redirect}} template which is not helpful for my bot. We're getting extremely deep into weeds here. It's now a redirect to the talk page a disambiguation page, not an article. I thought the purpose of article alerts was tracking articles, not disambiguation pages and not talk pages. I don't really see the point of project-tagging redirects. The AAlertBot also tracks WP:RFD redirects for discussion, so it would alert WikiProject when a redirect of interest to them is being discussed. As any "xyz (ship)" redirect would usually be of interest WPSHIPS, such as someone proposing a Primary Redirect RFD to a particular ship (such as "HMS xyz"), would change the target, that would rightly inform WPSHIPS. Or if someone were proposing to delete the redirect at RFD to replace it with a draftspace article, the wikiproject would be notified of the discussion. -- 65.92.246.191 ( talk) 00:28, 1 December 2022 (UTC) reply

OK, you basically had an edit conflict with the bot. You made the edit at 08:58 which the bot was going to make two minutes later at 09:00 anyway (but without any WikiProject templates). The reason this happens is due to caching issues. The bot works off a maintenance category and that page was still populating the category even though it shouldn't have been after your edit. If you see the bot do this again, feel free to just revert it. Coding a fix to avoid such edit conflicts is a low priority for me, given all the other more important stuff in my backlog. – wbm1058 ( talk) 00:24, 2 December 2022 (UTC) reply

Oh, wow. Edit warring for six months before anyone noticed or reported the issue. I suppose we're both equally guilty as neither has coded their bot to detect edit warring. What happened on 22 April 2023 was that an editor decided that there was a primary topic for Jean Gabriel Marie.

This was years after another editor decided (on 12 March 2016‎) that Jean Gabriel-Marie unquestionably and certainly referred to Jean Gabriel Marie (1852–1928), and only a fool might conceivably think the name referred to Jean Gabriel Marie (1907–1970), his son, coincidentally also a French composer.

Now, who is the primary topic for Jean Gabriel Marie (1907–1928) or Jean Gabriel Marie (1907-1928)? There must be a primary topic for these, because the name is so obviously not ambiguous.

Well, I guess the name was ambiguous back in 2010, but not any more!...

Curiously, the French wiki has the father's bio under the name fr:Gabriel Marie, and his son is a red link with an interwiki link back to the English wiki! Expect the unexpected on Wikipedia, and you will never be surprised. ( edit conflict) What's going on is that AnomieBOT wanted it to match the target of Talk:Jean Gabriel Marie (1907–1928) (which was pointing to Talk:Jean Gabriel Marie), while Bot1058 wanted it to match the target of Jean Gabriel Marie (1907-1928) (which points to Jean Gabriel-Marie). I just edited Talk:Jean Gabriel Marie (1907–1928) to point to the more useful Talk:Jean Gabriel-Marie, so now the bots should be in agreement as to the target.

I wonder why Bot1058 didn't already do that though, since Jean Gabriel Marie (1907–1928) has been pointing to Jean Gabriel-Marie for some time already? Anomie ⚔ 16:37, 24 October 2023 (UTC) reply

Looks like we had something similar going on at Talk:Syrian Republic (1946-1963), but without the easy fix. AnomieBOT wanted it to point to Talk:Syrian Republic (1946–1963) (which was not a redirect) while Bot1058 wants it to point to Talk:Syrian Republic (disambiguation) (matching Syrian Republic (1946–1963)). I stumbled across this this morning ( quarry:query/77535, prompted by WP:RAQ#High traffic talk pages), have a writeup on User talk:AnomieBOT previewed and ready to go in another tab, and came here to see whether wbm1058 prefers such reports on his bot's or his own talk page. Now two of my bots are mentioned on that list (once each) and Anomie's bot is mentioned twice too (one with my bot and another with someone else's).
