Hi. I'm wondering how I would be able to test the script you suggested at the link above. I recently stumbled upon the gadget proposal page and saw your suggestion. I tried to import it into my personal js, but was unable to get it to work. [1] Any ideas? Killiondude ( talk) 08:31, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, just mention it in the registration form.
This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets ( extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.
Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!
I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.
Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.
Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 14:51, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
The URL [in this script's mw.loader.load
call] should be made protocol-relative, that is: mw.loader.load('//bits.wikimedia.org...
in order to avoid mixed content in the event that someone is using the secure server without HTTPS Everywhere. Your common.js appears already to contain the proper protocol-relative usage. --

I use your Autocomplete script as a gadget on the All The Tropes wiki on the Orain wikifarm service and am quite pleased with it, but I was wondering how it could be configured to work in namespaces other than the main namespace, like our "Forum:" namespace?

Hi, I've been trying to get refToolbarVe working as an example of making a dialog. (I realize it's been supplanted by in-house methods). I thought maybe it had name conflicts with in-house cite dialog but couldn't get it working on localhost after a refactor either; can you confirm that it is still working? Also any tips on how to debug "dialog just doesn't show up" problems would be helpful as I've had the same problem with ones I've tried to write from scratch as well... :). Just a heads up in case you didn't know, but there were some ve core changes that will affect veReplace (Notably, the class ve.ui.Dialog has been replaced- try FragmentDialog- and the dialog constructor will need to take an additional argument, manager). Can the bot check suspected positives against listings in Wikipedia:Mirrors_and_forks subpages? That might improve the FP rate. Many of the forks there have page names that systematically derive from the WP article title. Might as well tilt the Whack-A-Mole game in our favour. Also pinging User:Jmh649. Would it be useful to have a bot (perhaps written by someone else) that builds a list of Wikipedia mirrors, to remove them from EranBot's false positives? I was thinking this might be worth requesting at WP:BOTREQ, though it's not really an internal bot function at all. I think it could be done by taking some characteristic text from multiple pages and looking for domains that come up with positive matches on a high percentage of them. Mike Christie ( talk - contribs - library) 01:58, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
I compiled a list of mirrors from the WMF plagiarism study last year, which may have some additional sites that aren't on the bigger list. These are the ones that were coming up frequently in Grammarly's plagiarism matching system (already in the form of regex, too): User:Sage (Wiki Ed)/mirrors.-- Sage (Wiki Ed) ( talk) 19:55, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

LeadSongDog, Doc James: Notice the 2 following changes in the bot:
This is definitely the case in the example, and I think in general it should be better, but please let me know if you see weired diffs or wrong behavior. This change would also affect the number of diffs behind sent to ithenticate service: for the example diff above, will not be sent to ithenticate since it is too small diff (only 163 characters). Thanks, Eran ( talk) 13:10, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
Given that many edits actually do provide an url or citation to the source used (imagine that!!!) it would seem prudent to first check the edit diff against such cited sources before going further afield to look at everything else. Is that an available option? LeadSongDog come howl! 16:56, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
The quality of results is really coming along. Nice work so far! Checking out the recent false positives, it seems like aside from mirrors, the edits that cause problems are mainly ones like this one ( report). Here, the block of text with a match was modified, but the actual matching text was not the part that was added. It seems like in a case like this where there's an <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline"> tag inside the ins tag, only the content inside the tags should be checked.-- Sage (Wiki Ed) ( talk) 20:28, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi.
This edit was recently tagged by Eranbot. I'm not too familiar with the bot, but it appears that it is supposed to skip checking citations, but it caught this addition of a quote inside a ref tag. If the bot is not intended to skip citations, it might be worth ignoring content added to the "quote" parameter in citation templates (for example: {{cite web|url=...|quote=Ignore this}}
) Such content is always going to be picked up by the bot, but probably should not be. I skimmed the source, and it seems to run a few regexes before submitting to Turnitin. It should be possible to remove the quote with something simple like... /quote=[^|<]*/i Let me know if I can be of any help. Thanks. —

Doc James, Eran, et al., in a recent set of edits of an historical article, which were large in toto, but with no new material added that was not sourced, large blocks of pre-existing material were moved about within the article. This prompted a response to me from another editor, citing Eranbot as the source of the plagiarism charge, which leads me to ask these questions:

A reader reported a potential copyvio to the Wikimedia foundation. It hasn't been tagged in my guess is because the source material is a college textbook and not online. I believe current search but will find things online but not sources that are printed. My hope is that Turnitin has access to a broader base of material including college textbooks. If this is true, could you try or better yet tell me how to try running it against Cyclic decomposition theorem?-- S Philbrick (Talk) 15:16, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
python plagiabot.py -page:"Cyclic decomposition theorem" -lang:en
Currently we have
User:EranBot/Copyright/rc as a huuuuge list that includes items already handled in addition to ones still pending. That makes it hard to find ones to do if I find a few minutes of free time (especially moving forward as more and more of the pending ones get done). Also, there are wikiprojects listed and notices posted to their various talkpages. It would be nice if this could all be integrated into the dynamic notice-boards that some projects have, where only notices relevant to that project (such as AFD, GA nom, etc.) are displayed directly on their talkpages. Both of these could be implemented by a filtering mechanism, where {{
plagiabot row2}} could take a {{{status_filter}}}
and {{{tags_filter}}}
that, if a value is passed, not display unless the value matched the actual {{{status}}}
or were listed in the {{{tags}}}
. The /rc page would propagate them. Then we could use the /rc page as a template, and pass the _filter fields to limit which entries are displayed for various purposes.

There are templates that refer to other templates. Also, how difficult would it be to implement the support of predefined array of values as another template param type? Hello. I noticed that my recent edits to this page were tagged as a potential copyright violation. I used content from previous seasons and references about Season 4 for that article, and although it is styllistically similar to the pages for previous seasons, it is different enough that I don't quite understand why those changes might constitute a copyright violation. I have edited various Wikipedia articles for the last 12 years or so, and am highly respected for my work here, so if there was any problem with my edits to that page in question, I don't know exactly what that would be. If you could enlighten me on this issue, I'd greatly appreciate it, as I never intended to violate a copyright of any kind. In fact, I studiously try to avoid questionable conduct on Wikipedia, which my contribution history demonstrates. Thanks. -- Jgstokes ( talk) 00:12, 25 September 2019 (UTC)

Hi Eran, I am surprised to see the aria article was marked with "Potential copyright violation". The libretto must be written as is. I have written many arias, this is the first time I received the violation message. Please clarify. You can refer to list of arias to see how it was written according to Opera Project. Is there any mechanism for autopatrolling edits flagged as copyvios by this bot? My edits are going to be flagged every time I use this tool (click "Toggle stub code") to create an article because it pulls public domain content from the corresponding NCBI gene pages (e.g., [23]), which are used on many other sites. I intend to use this tool a lot in the future since there are still thousands of missing articles on human protein-coding genes. Seppi333 ( Insert 2¢) 23:49, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

This gene encodes a ryanodine receptor found in cardiac muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum. The encoded protein is one of the components of a calcium channel, composed of a tetramer of the ryanodine receptor proteins and a tetramer of FK506 binding protein 1B proteins, that supplies calcium to cardiac muscle. Mutations in this gene are associated with stress-induced polymorphic ventricular tachycardia and arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]From what I've seen, that data is provided by OMIM, NCBI staff, and/or refseq, but this script has been in use in one form or another (originally via User:ProteinBoxBot, which created several thousand gene articles using it when it was active) for a number of years. I can't find an explicit statement about it being PD on NCBI gene, but given that it only appears to be supplied by US government entities (i.e., OMIM, refseq, NCBI gene curators), I think it's a safe assumption that it's always public domain. Editors at WT:MCB would probably know more than me about this though.

Great tool !!! Eranbot flagged a copyvio here, which I noticed after I had cleaned up that edit. I reverted the edit, rewrote some of the text, and notified the new (copyvio) editor. The Bot instructions don't explain to me what I should do next. Do I need to have someone scrub the interim edits that I made to cleanup the addition before I saw the copyvio? Where do I flag that? {{
CC-notice}}
or attribution can be added manually,
like I did here. (This won't be necessary for this case, since you've already amended the content.) Normally cases found by EranBot are listed at
CopyPatrol, but for some reason it's not appearing there, even though it is present
in the log. Revision deletion is not required in this instance, since failure to include attribution is a violation of the CC-by license terms but not a copyright violation per se. For cases where you do want revision deletion to be done, you can use the template {{
Copyvio-revdel}}
or if you find it awkward to use the template let me know on my talk page and I will do it, or ask any of the folks listed at
Category:Wikipedia administrators willing to handle RevisionDelete requests. —

Hi Eran, I understand EranBot has reported a potential copyright violation on revision 946631344. This refers to my original version of the article. I assume it is implying there is a problem that most of the initial text has been copied from The Old Bostonian Association Wiki. Please be assured that I also wrote that and I have no issue with me copying it. I realise that may disqualify the Old Bostonian Association Wiki from being quoted as a reference. If this is the case I have no problem with removing that reference or with someone else verifying the reference. There are plenty of other places where the information can be verified. In fact the text has already slightly diverged from the original. I would be happy to discuss the matter further or consider following any suggestions you may have. EranBot has listed this as a potential copyright violation. The new article is a fork from Winston Churchill#Early life which has a serious WP:LENGTH constraint and is being trimmed into summary form. The text found by your bot in a Wikipedia mirror site had been copied direct from Winston Churchill#Early life. User:Less Unless has raised a speedy deletion request without ensuring that the source of the alleged violation is not itself a WP mirror. This needs to be sorted out. I have contested the CSD#G12 and I have ensured full attribution of the transfer of content from Winston Churchill#Early life to Early life of Winston Churchill. Thank you. I was referred to you as an admin for what I think is the only existing copyviobot. Here's the situation: I discovered a red link for Anti-nuclear protests in the United States and discovered it have been deleted earlier in January for copyvio. I asked it be restored, the admin refused and another user noticed and restored the seriously incomplete version that is on line now. I found a cached version with a last edit dated November 20, 2020. That version has no accusations of copyvio (I would have though the admin could have done something similar). I suspect the copyvio could have been introduced in the month of December and doesn't affect the long standing content an its 145 pre-existing sources. I have placed the cached version in my sandbox User:Trackinfo/Anti-nuclear protests in the United States. Before I go any further with this version, I'd like to have the bot check it for copyvio. Hopefully I can find if there is a copyvio problem in the historical version, if there is, identify it so it can be cleaned up. How do I get the bot to even see a non-public page? And after it is done, how do I get the report of its findings? Would a clean report serve as evidence if the article were to come under attack again? Trackinfo ( talk) 07:22, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

Eranbot placed this edit in the Potential copyright violation log. I have reviewed the edit, and no copyvio is involved (the copied text was originally published in 1854, and there's a proper in-text attribution to the original author, Robert Schumann, who, BTW, died in 1856, and an accurate reference to the source where the text can be found is given). How do we go from here? How can the edit be marked as "definitely not a copyvio" and/or removed from the "Potential copyright violation log"? We Were One: Shoulder to Shoulder with the Marines Who Took Fallujah has no copyright violation since it mentions where the quote comes from and references it. I believe there is no copyright violation on revision 1006305567, List of previous 7de Laan characters. This list of characters was part of the main article on 7de Laan, but was deleted more than once by another user as "indiscriminate" information (which I would argue it was not - a list of past characters from a TV show, especially a soap opera, represents an important part of the program's history). To clean up the article and save the information, I created a list page for previous characters, copying the deleted information to the list page and reformatting it. As the original text was available on Wikipedia under CC BY-SA, this copying would not seem to me to be a copyright violation. I would suggest at most all that needs to be done is to cite where the information originally came from, another Wikipedia page. Bayonett ( talk) 15:27, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
Hello Eran! I ran across this blog post from 2014: VisualEditor gadgets It suggests you and a colleague had adapted a spell-checking gadget to highlight wrongly spelled words within the VisualEditor as well. Is that right, have you ever deployed those modifications and does it still work nowadays? I have just managed to install the gadget for my account in both German and Spanish Wikipedia, but it does not highlight anything while editing in VisualEditor, although the same page gets highlights when displayed for reading only. I am asking because I am currently integrating an external spell checker for Czech into Wikipedia and we would like it to work with VisualEditor – and your work seems to be the closest to our idea what has been achieved so far, so we would be happy to find inspiration in your work before designing our solution. -- Blahma ( talk) 15:40, 8 March 2021 (UTC)

It got tagged as a copy vio, but it’s a legitimate copy per WP:SPINOFF. Do I need to put an attribution somewhere? Such as on the talk page? Not sure what the policy is when it comes to expanded lists. Best. 4meter4 ( talk) 17:25, 13 June 2021 (UTC)

Material was from a GFDL-licensed site called Thelemapedia. [31] If I'm not mistaken, this article was original cloned from that fairly inadequate one and it is already credited as a source. Somewhere the lead section got removed from or was never copied to Wikipedia so I grabbed the latest version, though it seems it hasn't been edited for a while. For some particular reason, an unknown bot marked my new page as copyright violating, and I would not knowingly violate or infringe copyrights on any Wikipedia site; in any case, that may get changers blocked. As this is still in draft (not submitted for review), I'd first copied the previous Kennan Institute Director's article Matthew Rojansky to match formats, then replaced those bio details with the equivalent details (degrees, schools, career, etc.) with WEP's own, and cited the sources I've used. There aren't many ways one can phrase things like "adjunct professor at Georgetown University" and "visiting professor at the Catholic University of America", so yes, those bits of text will match the sources. If someone would like to go over the text completed so far and either paraphrase or delete whatever "copyvio" remains that I haven't, I'll happily accept the help! – •Raven .talk 08:45, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
Hello! This has been flagged for copyright violations incorrectly. I am fairly certain it has been flagged for sub-heading 2 "Fashion Week", subheading 1 "Key Trends", Heading: Paris Fashion Week, which is a drafted bibliography, not the final edit of the page. The final edit of the page will not have any direct copy and pasting. I would appreciate your bot unflagging my incomplete article as copyright infringement. This revision [32] was incorrectly marked as a 'potential copyright violation'. The content added comes from the source and it is cited. I don't know why it is marked as a copyright violation even though they only thing both the source and articles says are names and titles. In the source, it features shortened versions of titles whereas in the article it uses the full version. For example, Justice Secretary -> Secretary of State for Justice. For some reason you have logged this as a copyright violation. I can only surmise that this is because there was a delay of a few minutes between the creation of the draft, which yes, is a copy from French Wikipedia which I intend to translate and reference, and the creation of the talk page containing the appropriate translated template. This seems a bit aggressive -- maybe you should program in a delay of an hour or so -- but in any event it has now been remedied. Could you please verify that the erroneous entry has now been removed, as I would prefer not to be logged as a violator of copyright, especially since it's in error. Thank you very much Elinruby ( talk) 07:16, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
Hello, it seems that for reason this draft has been marked for copyright violation. I would like to find out. The only reason i can think of is that this article doesn't have references yet, which is why it was created as a draft in the first place. Thank you - HotMAN0199 04:10, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
Unsure why this was tagged as a potential copyvio, since it was essentially un-redirecting a page and all the content restored was in history, not revdel'ed or oversighted. Is it just because the revision added 12k characters all at once? If so, it would be nice to not have un-redirection trigger a false alarm. Thanks, Jclemens ( talk) 20:54, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

I just published The Saddle Boys and see that you have stated there is a possible copyright violation. Since the last book in the series was published in 1915 the books are no longer under copyright, so could you please tell me what I've done wrong. I did give quotes of the original publisher's summaries, and listed a 1984 reference book as the place where I obtained those summaries, but the summaries are no longer under copyright. Would it be better for me to find those summaries elsewhere, such as an advertisement in a 1915 children's book found on Gutenberg.com?

Hi.
This edit was recently tagged by Eranbot. I'm not too familiar with the bot, but it appears that it is supposed to skip checking citations, but it caught this addition of a quote inside a ref tag. If the bot is not intended to skip citations, it might be worth ignoring content added to the "quote" parameter in citation templates (for example: {{cite web|url=...|quote=Ignore this}}
) Such content is always going to be picked up by the bot, but probably should not be. I skimmed the source, and it seems to run a few regexes before submitting to Turnitin. It should be possible to remove the quote with something simple like... /quote=[^|<]*/i Let me know if I can be of any help. Thanks. —

Currently we have
User:EranBot/Copyright/rc as a huuuuge list that includes items already handled in addition to ones still pending. That makes it hard to find ones to do if I find a few minutes of free time (especially moving forward as more and more of the pending ones get done). Also, there are wikiprojects listed and notices posted to their various talkpages. It would be nice if this could all be integrated into the dynamic notice-boards that some projects have, where only notices relevant to that project (such as AFD, GA nom, etc.) are displayed directly on their talkpages. Both of these could be implemented by a filtering mechanism, where {{
plagiabot row2}} could take a {{{status_filter}}}
and {{{tags_filter}}}
that, if a value is passed, not display unless the value matched the actual {{{status}}}
or were listed in the {{{tags}}}
. The /rc page would propagate them. Then we could use the /rc page as a template, and pass the _filter fields to limit which entries are displayed for various purposes.

Hi Friend!
Autocomplete is awesome, i use everyday. Good job!
My question is, there's a way to implement the autocomplete in the Portuguese Wikipedia? My life will be so much easier if i could use this feature there.
Waiting for you response, thanks!!

mw.loader.load('//he.wikipedia.org/w/load.php?modules=ext.gadget.autocomplete');
There are templates that refer to other templates. Also, how difficult would it be to implement the support of predefined array of values as another template param type? The array (along with template name and parameter name/position) of course will be provided by the user who imports autocomplete.js. Hi Eran! I hope this message finds you well. I have read the report on the plagiarism bot --congrats!--, and I was wondering what it would take to make it work in Wikipedia in Portuguese. I am an education program leader, and as I work with my students I face a real challenge to check and prevent plagiarism, and an automated system would be a tremendous support. Do you think this would be possible? Thanks in advance, -- Joalpe ( talk) 17:59, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

Great tool !!! Eranbot flagged a copyvio here, which I noticed after I had cleaned up that edit. I reverted the edit, rewrote some of the text, and notified the new (copyvio) editor. The Bot instructions don't explain to me what I should do next. Do I need to have someone scrub the interim edits that I made to cleanup the addition before I saw the copyvio? Where do I flag that? {{
CC-notice}}
or attribution can be added manually,
like I did here. (This won't be necessary for this case, since you've already amended the content.) Normally cases found by EranBot are listed at
CopyPatrol, but for some reason it's not appearing there, even though it is present
in the log. Revision deletion is not required in this instance, since failure to include attribution is a violation of the CC-by license terms but not a copyright violation per se. For cases where you do want revision deletion to be done, you can use the template {{
Copyvio-revdel}}
or if you find it awkward to use the template let me know on my talk page and I will do it, or ask any of the folks listed at
Category:Wikipedia administrators willing to handle RevisionDelete requests.

Thank you. So, this bot flagged my edit to this page as a copyright violation. There is no copyvio here, the text flagged is a species list which effectively cannot be paraphrased or amended. Additionally, the list on the source does not state who the authorities are, but the bot has flagged that as a copyvio. If there is any violation of copyright here then every species list on Wikipedia should be flagged. Quetzal1964 ( talk) 08:50, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi! I got a possible copyright violation tag on Draft:Critical Role (campaign one). This article is being spilt off from Draft:List of Critical Role episodes after some editors agreed it was getting too long (the length of the Critical Role article was why the first draft was created). I've been moving info over from both of those articles to the new draft. I thought including the linked source in the revision history would mean the bot wouldn't tag it. Thanks.

This revision [32] was incorrectly marked as a 'potential copyright violation'. The content added comes from the source and it is cited. I don't know why it is marked as a copyright violation even though they only thing both the source and articles says are names and titles.

Unsure why this was tagged as a potential copyvio, since it was essentially un-redirecting a page and all the content restored was in history, not revdel'ed or oversighted.
