First Indian Circumnavigation

Thank you for the review of my post: First Indian Circumnavigation. I had a query regarding the reason for the rejection. The existing article i.e. Trishna(yacht) was aimed to give the facts of the boat and its numerous voyages in brief. However, the present post if a important landmark in the nautical history of India and deserves a new page. It was the first occasion when any Indian has circumnavigated the globe in a sailing boat. Would you agree with this? Amreshwar Pratap Singh 09:59, 26 September 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ayepee99 ( talkcontribs)

You should add information that makes it dramatically different to the Trishna. You have it started in the "Honors and Awards" section, but what did this impact? Zach Vega ( talk to me) 11:46, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
I am sorry, but not understand what you meant. In the present article, the first sentence itself starts by giving a preview of the topic of the article, being the first circumnavigation by an Indian crew in a sailing boat. Are you implying that I shift the contents given in the Honours and Awards in the introductory section at the beginning? Amreshwar Pratap Singh 09:46, 28 September 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ayepee99 ( talkcontribs)
Take the "Trishna was given the singular honour of thereafter being transported to New Delhi and displayed on a tableau as pert of the Republic Day Parade, 1987 along the Rajpath" sentence and put it in the lead as well, but still leave it in the "Honors and Awards" sections. That should do it. Zach Vega ( talk to me) 10:06, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

dab page Lorde - Question

Hey, Zach, thanks for your work on the dab page Lorde. Just a question for you, as I was a little puzzled by the way it was handled. My AfC submission proposing to create the dab page [1] was declined, but then you created the identical page I had proposed (same entries, with only a formatting change to one of the entries). I don't really care (much), since it has exactly the same effect, but I found this a little confusing and figured there must be some technical reason. Could you explain? Thanks. Dwpaul ( talk) 01:21, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

It wouldn't let me move your page since the Lorde article was already in place. I had to move the Lorde (singer) article first, but then since that made Lorde a redirect, I had to just place the contents in the article. Since it technically existed at that point, I had no option but to decline it since it would try to automove it if accepted. Zach Vega ( talk to me) 01:24, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I figured it was something like that. Thanks for the speedy reply! Dwpaul ( talk) 01:25, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

Dear Zach,

I misunderstood a little bit reason for rejection of my article. Rejection letter stated that my article appeared blank, which it shouldn't as I did save the filled form, anyhow, I noticed that below is the comment that reviewer took out external link because it conflicted with guidelines, which is ok. Now I cannot actually understand how reviewer could take out external link if my article was blank?

Sorry I am new to this whole article thing on wiki, thus would like to understand what did I do wrong.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Approved Good job! Zach Vega ( talk to me) 16:59, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

Can you allow other longterm editors time to edit sections they added without interupting them please. It's really rude to edit one at a time others work while they are in the middle of doing so. Alos, do not introduce spacing errors, in citations — they lead to spacing issues that then have to be fixed later-on in editing practice. Jimthing ( talk) 23:04, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

Things can't be left unsourced for too long, especially the middle of an FAC (which is failing, but that's another story). What spacing errors are you referring to? Zach Vega ( talk to me) 23:12, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
The huge number of single-edits each time on a page make it incredibly difficult for other editors also on the page to re-incorporate their edits into yours, or vice-versa, and also makes tracking who screwed-up a page (e.g. for edit reversions) a lot more difficult. Re. cite spacing: there is no need to leave spaces around citation markup, as it needlessly adds page data size, but more importantly creates false line breaks, which are likely to appear wrongly or need fixing later, when later edits are made to the page, thus are an unnecessary editing practice. Sometimes spacing may appear to look strange during your particular edit, but they cause less issues than adding needless spacing into citations. It's a minor thing many editors don't realise. Thanks. Jimthing ( talk) 23:23, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
Couldn't you just use the (prev) function to reincorporate changes? Making minor single-edits is just a style that some editors use. As for citation spacing, I didn't realize that was occurring. Zach Vega ( talk to me) 23:27, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes, but prev function cannot be used where text has been moved about on page in the course of a users' edit, and many other reasons. Sure everyone has their own style of editing, but doing 50 or so tiny edits in a short space of time is not helpful for background site usage reasons, and is highly annoying for other editors also trying to add additional data to the page. Users have access to section edit buttons (so one section can be dealt with in it's entirety) for this very reason. And also the 'preview' button, which should be used to check markup works BEFORE submitting anyway to make sure it is correctly done first time on submission, instead of constantly hitting 'save' in-between tiny edits each time. As previous mentioned; it's clearer to see several changes on a single edit in page history, rather then having to check through hundreds and hundreds of small edits, in order to deal with various issues. It's also bad form, as many trite users use this to make their "edit volume" look artificially high, as they may do say 10 thousand edits on WP over a year, while a really good editor who knows what they are doing and takes time to make deep edits only has a fraction of this amount — why we have the "depth" stat measurement. Jimthing ( talk) 00:38, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
Do 10,000 edits really make a difference on 653,022,782? People who edit differently than you aren't inherently bad editors, they just place content differently. Zach Vega ( talk to me) 00:53, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
I didn't say they were "bad editors"—many add good info, as I know you do—but as I clearly explained, it's rather that those editors do not realise how their editing behaviour affects other users trying to edit around them. As well as how the site functions in the background generally (page loading times, overall server load, etc.), which often contributes to site slow downs and page fails. The preview button exists for a reason, as does the section edit button: to help stop these issues by encouraging more effective editor behaviour. Jimthing ( talk) 02:29, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
